Surprised there was no topic about this already (unless I'm blind and missed it somewhere), but according to Warcry it seems the new expansion title will be "The Empyrean Age", just like the novel of Tony Gonzalez. It'll include Factional Warfare and some massive story-changes based on the new novel (and I'm sure most of the news-articles are connected to it as well)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. Novel is supposedly out in June, so I'd expect the expansion at least before August. (And an interview on rockpapershotgun.com a while ago said "June")
"With five years under their belt, most MMOs would be getting into old age. Not EVE, they still have aggressive plans to grow their game. This summer, they plan to launch yet another free expansion and that's where the aforementioned scoop comes in.
The title of the next expansion - revealed here for the first time - will be "The Empyrean Age," the same as the EVE novel by Tony Gonzalez also slated for the summer. The reason is simple, this is the first EVE Online expansion where the story of the game and its universe will play a key role, a lot of it based off the novel. image
"The universe of Eve has always had this fragile peace between the races and now that's going to end," Massey said. This means war and that is the core new feature: factional warfare. "People can actually take an active role and choose sides for who they want to fight for and who they want to fight against."
More details on this expansion are going to trickle out over the coming months, but it marks - at long wait - the culmination of the plan that was once upon a time called Kali and has now turned into not one, but four epic expansions: Revelations I, Revelations II, Trinity and now The Empyrean Age." |

Hmmmm Interesting...
They have been working tworads the big fight for a long time now and its been clear that the mounting tensions between the empires have begun to strain the ever so fragile peace that we all have now it will be simple fascinating to see if this is true and where it leads. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ADHD + Dyslexia = BAD SPELLING Proud to be in the FNA (for over a year) and not be a alt!

sounds great to me but they will probably have it where you have to flag yourself for faction pvp by declaring allegiance to a side. |

Well, we'll see. This could bring interesting dilemmas. I am currently in Amarr space for social reasons, but I would actually love to support the Gallente. I wonder how will they implement it. Will you have to move to your faction's turf? Will it kill the standings towards the Empire I want to work for, etc. http://www.geocities.com/vagrantweapons/db.jpg |

Yeah there was some very interesting discussion in the game develoment forum a few months back. Multiracial and non-Rping corps are either not going to participate or individuals the do participate in it may have to go towards their supportive faction. At least the way I have seen it since I heard of the developments shortly after I started playing. I will have to make a similar decision since I would support my fellow brothers if and when I participate.

I just pray that they implement factional warfare in such a way as to make it fun and challenging (even for the underdog). I'm concerned that it will just end up as a means to legalize empire piracy by one faction's supporters against the opposing faction's supporters.
I also hope they redine the factions a bit, though with recent news reports, that looks likely.

Edited by: Johli on 17/04/2008 21:02:25 Book synopsis from Amazon.com... Amazon.co.uk
Quote: These are times that will test the bounds of the human spirit. A clone with no name or past awakens to a cruel existence, hunted mercilessly for crimes he may never know; yet he stands close to the pinnacle of power in New Eden. A disgraced ambassador is confronted by a mysterious woman who knows everything about him, and of the sinister plot against his government; his actions will one day unleash the vengeful wrath of an entire civilization. And among the downtrodden masses of a corporation-owned world, a man named Tibus Heth is about to launch a revolution that will change the course of history The confluence of these dark events will lead humanity towards a tragic destiny. The transcendence of man to the dream of immortality has bred a quest for power like none before it; empires spanning across thousands of stars will clash in the depths of space and on the worlds within. Those who stand before the tides of war, willingly or not, must face the fundamental choices that have been with man for tens of thousands of years, unchanged since the memory of Earth was lost. This is EVE, The Empyrean Age. A test of our convictions and the will to survive.

When it comes to the expansion, I've looked forward to factional warfare. I am hoping that CONCORD will be split up, so that the security status system will work in a way more similar to Frontier, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a filthy pirate; I really think the current security status system makes a difference at all, as people like me will only use a frekkin' alt to haul things.
A change in the sec status system may very well give low sec the boost that so many have asked for. ____________________ Honk if you think that I'm a n00b |

How this whole scenario will affect the Eve economy makes my brain hurt.
You start to restrict travel and trade crashes to a halt. With trading hubs being intricately interconnected, (regardless of which faction's space it is in) unraveling all of this spells economic chaos.
Will the Isk continue to reign as the currency of the Universe? Maybe not if economies suddenly become regional or smaller.
I really question the veracity of this story, the implications are somewhat dire if it is indeed true...

If the 4 Empires go to war, I'd really love to see a bit of Sec change on the borders. Just have a thin border-land of 3 or more jumps between each of the 4 empires that is low sec. After all, the empires certainly wouldn't be cooperating on law enforcement between blowing each other up, would they?
It'd do wonders for the New Eden economy. You'd see Jita's "super-hub" status start to diminish, and some local hubs spring up in the other 3 empires, seeing as people wouldn't necessarily wish to risk the trip too often. For the first time in EVE's entire history, you'd have proper inter-regional trading. For the first time ever, New Eden might be realistically divided in to 4 separate economies, instead of just one big one. Proper, normal low-sec pirating might become a popular profession again (with suicide ganking becoming less popular) and you'd be giving normal people a need to use low sec for something...
It'd be glorious.
Doubt it'll happen, but a man can dream ------

The thing is you play a pod pilot you payed the goverment run skools to get an educacation/inplants as sutch then after "pod skool" you are a free man to do as you please a civi maby a civi with a gun but still as a pod pilot your nutreal to all 4 empiers you can befrend them but you can't be "part" of them at lest not with the curent system so long as your not "part" of an empire you can do as you plese it all comes down to a choice that YOU the player make as to what your going to do in the vastness of the Verss. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ADHD + Dyslexia = BAD SPELLING Proud to be in the FNA (for over a year) and not be a alt!

Last dev-blog seemed to be about dynamic warfare systems with procedures for adding new stations. It seems CCP is quite ambitious with this and I'm curious about what they'll come up with.
They could keep it simple as well. Give people a way to align themself to a faction, let the people that are aligned to an enemy faction appear as war-targets and you'll automatically have much more Empire warfare that goes further than the current war-dec system. Looking at the success of RedvsBlue and Privateers you'll there's more than enough interest for that. But it'd be cool if the actual borders and stations change dynamically of course.
Personally I hope it'll have some influence on the economies as well. Currently you can travel between all the Empires through high-sec and I'd love to see that becoming impossible.
There's also a little hint in the mail the people that ordered the Eve Stragetic Maps received. |

Edited by: Gul Amarr on 19/04/2008 11:32:08 I'm really looking forward to this, assuming it's not mandatory to take part but on a voluntary basis like joining a factions navy. Nice way to get involved in some pvp for new players like me willing to roleplay a bit.
Still wondering how it will be done though - given the current player distribution, Caldari may pretty easily outnumber anyone else - plus I wonder if all factions will be at war with each other or if it's e.g Gallente and Minies against Amarr and Caldari...

Well im not sure how they are going to implement this, but heres my guess .. :P
Example:-
You are an Ammarian roleplayer, you have just killed a scumabag Mimmatarrian roleplayer! Heres the good bit, (Message receieved from ****** of high-command)
'Thanks Gorjy, great job on killing ****** his been a pain in the backside for us for a while now. As a token of our appreciation you will receive 30,000 loyalty points for you pleasure. Thanks again, now go get some more!'
Additional you will receieve x.xx% raise in loyalty points, Fantastic! Finally a way to reap the benefits of missioning...... by PVPing! whilst in high-sec ...ooooo makes you quiver dont it!

I'm really curious how this factional warfare will be implemented. I only hope that this will not be the end of mixed-racial corporations. That would turn the present Alliance and corporation landscape upside down...
Additionally, I think there is more to this expansion besides "just" factional warfare, what everybody already knows who have pre-ordered a copy of Serenity Steel's 2D-maps. If that isn't an hoax, they've got this email last night:
Quote: Thanks for ordering EVE Strategic Maps, which we were expecting to begin shipping within the next 10 days.
However, we have just returned from CCPÆs Iceland HQ where we discussed some exciting new content which will slightly delay the shipping of EVE Strategic Maps, but will in fact put you well ahead of the rest of the player base.
Why? There is, as you may know already, an expansion coming in a few months, which will introduce completely new content to the world of EVE. So although your copy of ESM will arrive a couple of weeks later than planned, it will now contain advance information, allowing you totake advantage of the knowledge of this new content before anyone else. CCP has agreed to exclusively reveal this data to us now, wellin advance of it ægoing liveÆ, in order that we can ensure the first run of EVE Strategic Maps includes the most accurate information possible.
As you read this, Serenity Steele is busy exploring this new content in his Polaris Frigate, plotting the data and mapping every system, planet, moon, asteroid field, ice field and jump gate. With EVE Strategic Maps on your desk, you can be ready to take control. We will email you again to let you know when your copy of ESM is on the way, but for now thanks for your patience. We promise you will not be is appointed.
Regards The E-ON / ESM team

If factional warfare is much more rewarding than pure mission running it will put pure care bears behind the curves and make mission macros inefficient for farming isk.
So I approve.
