Gunfleet Logistics is proud to announce a product we've wanted to share with EVE for as long as we've been developing it: BACON.
BACON is a software tool that works with CCP's log server to collect real time data about entries and exits in a system that you are in. It then compares that data to a standings file, and sounds different tones/sounds depending on the status of each entry. For instance, if a war target enters the system, you hear a muted pistol shot. If an unknown enters, BACON sounds a click. Friendly and known entries are low tones. You also hear different tones when people leave the system. The sounds are completely configurable by the user, and can be imported and exported.
BACON's performance is, quite simply, real time. You can rely on BACON to let you know when someone enters the system you are in. If you happen to be in a different conversation window than Local, you still are alerted to system entries. If you happen to be quickly checking a forum, or momentarily distracted from EVE û BACON will save your ship.
BACON can log select EVE data to a secure server, without associating it with you. (System Enter/Exit, Station Enter/Leaves, Contact Logon/Logoffs only.) The user has absolute control of the data BACON sends: you can turn off all data, or filter it to only upload data on hostile forces, shielding friendly movements.
BACON's method of interaction with the log server and logs are EULA and TOS compliant and approved by CCP. Please see this thread for further information. (Specifically, CCP Lingorm and CCP GrimmiÆs statements) In addition, weÆre releasing the code under the GPL license for immediate community use and review. Gunfleet Logistics believes that it is important that everything be as open, transparent, and safe as possible.
For more information, please visit the installation pages at: http://bacon.gunfleet.org/
Thanks,

too lazy to drag local into a separate window? too lazy to reduce the size of your browser window so you can see the local window in Eve?

My most troubling aspect to this application is apparently the need for the api key. I assume this is used to create some sort of entry logging to help id data senders, for those who send in the data, but issuing at your API key so freely...
The other side of this argument, data reporting to GunFleet's main server makes you (GunFleet) able to report the movement of anyone(and potentially their entire fleet) who uses this program. No where is this warning posted in your threads or on your website.
Impressive effort and feat making this though. Shame it is not properly "open to the communty" by the decision to make Gunfleet's server the only optional central repository.

Sounds like a promising tool, but I can see it being used more for spying rather than as a defensive tool.

Actually, it's so the app can detect you (and not announce when you switch systems) and your corp/alliance mates without a standings file. Don't believe us? That's why we're releasing the source. We thought about keeping the source closed, but decided it wouldn't be very useful if you couldn't check the source code to make sure we weren't doing anything 'bad' with it. Also, you only need a limited key, so that's just characters, skills, and balances IIRC.
Originally by: Shar Tegral The other side of this argument, data reporting to GunFleet's main server makes you (GunFleet) able to report the movement of anyone(and potentially their entire fleet) who uses this program. No where is this warning posted in your threads or on your website.
First, here's a quote from our website (http://bacon.gunfleet.org): By default, all system enter/exit, station enter/exit, and contact logon/logoff messages are logged to our central server. These messages can be filtered by standing to cloak your allies and friends or disabled completely from within the BACON client. These messages are anonymous -- no information is stored about who reported them.
If you don't want to report your data, the settings are right in the middle of the configuration screen you have to go through to set it up (set block submissions for to 'All', uncheck the 'submit contacts logging' and 'submit station entries'). We aren't forcing you to submit your data.
Originally by: Shar Tegral Impressive effort and feat making this though. Shame it is not properly "open to the communty" by the decision to make Gunfleet's server the only optional central repository.
One of the things we're hoping to find out with this public release is how far a little PHP/MySql script that this thing submits to will scale. We may end up having to release an update that disables the reporting due to load on our server.
We've also got some nice ideas on ways to expand this, but we wanted to get the basics out to the community first and see what you guys thought. |

This is depressing to see.
End of story.
CCP this is crap. This is a macro. No, ands, ifs, or buts about it. Macros are forbidden by the EULA.
It automatically reads files generated by the client and/or a program included with the client. -----

In before the lock and possible ban of the OP as I don't think they realize just what they're advertising.

I think it is a very clever tool and could be extremely useful. It is edgy though so the reception is going to be alot of love and hate (hate is usually more displayed though). Please do not take my statements as a negative comment... while troubled by the use of the limited Api I totally understand why it might be relevant. (It is not like half the community doesn't already publish it at In.Eve no?) Originally by: Cesar Malari That's why we're releasing the source.
I had not seen the comment where you were stating the releasing of the code. Does this include the server side coding as well? If so, wow - rather magnanimous of GunFleet to release this info. Again, please don't take my commentary as negative. It's late and my mind isn't what it used to be so I may have sounded a much more critical opinion then the one I actually hold.

Oh I thought I should add... the funniest thing is going to watch all the "ibtl's" and "banhammer" calls from people. Nothing like demonstrating their inability to read to make an OP laugh eh?
Good luck with this and rest assured all of us, even the trolls, will use this program if it continues to have CCP's approval.
