I support the removal of local, getting that out of the way. I'm troubled by the Easy Button that BACON seems to be for afk players. But the program itself isnt the problem, it's just taking game info and rendering it audiably instead of visually.
So if that's the case, what's the difference? I really doubt CCP'd get rid of Local, and even then it would've been better if this whole issue popped up with the REAL complaint (of local) instead of bashing a decent programmer's work. -----

I can transmit the local channel to an LCD screen next to my Tv-chair, and CTRL-Q with my HTPC remote.
Ban hardware! It breaks the spirit of the game!

So, if my corp/alliance were to create a version of bacon for use of its members, that would be ok

This entire thread, and the multitude of others which seem to have trashed the first page of GD are irritating. I really don't see why everyone is getting their panties in a knot, would someone please explain, properly, why BACON is such a huge threat?

Apparently the case is that it would be okay if you didn't tell anyone you used it. -----

Yes, I know it's frustrating and I share your concern about these tools Siigari. I really do.
That doesn't however, change the fact that you are starting a crusade that will amount to nothing. Tools like this are being used and have been used for a long time. Banning BACON will accomplish nothing.
Focus your energy on the root of the problem, not the program that has upset your perception that EVE is fair.

Eh... Why?
Call me dense, but I can't quite see what's so objectionable about the local window that makes it impossible to keep it open, nor can I really imagine running EVE on such a low-res monitor that it simply must be removed...

If you're having problem with the local window taking up too much space, I'm going to assume that you're running EVE at roughly 640x480…. Dual-screening that won't help you much, so I'd suggest getting a decent, bog-standard 1280x1024 screen – that way you get four times your current screen real-estate instead of just twice the size.

Not at all, the real problem is real estate in Hight. I'd like to suck out all the portraits in the local list so I can just have the names and minor relation icons, but it's just too long vertically. (The dream setup would be a 1050x1680 for a secondary.) -----

Comparing Vent to BACON... o.0 Slightly different... Sure your friends can yell at you that you about to get squished.. But at least it requires players to have eyes on the aforementioned hostile in order to tell you about it..and promotes teamwork and communication.. Bacon is quite frankly an abuse of the logserver, and doesnt help Eve in any way... Methinks a fair number of players would rather cancel their subs than play Eve with cr*p like this allowed.. CCP "Local was never meant to be an intel tool"

As Antraxx says.
You cant justify the prog by saying EVE is unfair but then hail it for being the great equalizer of the game.
I'm fully behind the notion Local is the problem not BACON converting it into a different sensory medium. But the nature of that medium, that it can be turned up to absurd levels soas to hear from anywhere in your living area and works while eve is minimized (neither of which is true for the visual equivilent the prog gets its data from), is what is driving this controversy.
That it's not the first program to do it or that it's the only publicly advritised/available one is pretty irrelevant to the core issue that programs like this are bad for game play in long+short term and that the aspect of the game they are enabled by needs to be dealt with.

Yes, because pressing scan every 30 seconds is SUCH fun.

Oh hay, look, another BACON whine thread.
If you can't take preventive measures then you take the risk.
Don't like to scan? Don't scan then, but don't cry that you died, or think that using a bot program to do the work for you is something CCP will agree with upon further review.

Originally by: Gojyu But, when I'm afk ratting, I'm able to tell when enemies or neutrals are up to 10 jumps away, using a recently released tool called vent, and all I need to be is in range of my computer speakers. Surely, this travesty of a metagaming tool should be banned with bacon
Active player relaying intel to you != data mining tool that tells you when someone enters your system because you can't be bothered to pay attention.

Removing local would mean every player would be constantly clicking the scan button to see if there is anybody around. People would still see you coming! It may also cause crazy lag because of the amount of location requests. Every action has an equal and OPPOSITE REACTION.

CCP has said that if they remove local as it is now they will add other tools to gather some of the same intel.
There is problems with local yes but with Bacon you dont even have to pay attention, increasing the problems associated with local a lot.
