Signed up of course, and even competed in a few competitions for a beta key. Nothing came of it yet though, so it's frustrating. |

Better nothing than what I got, they admitted me to technical beta which was 3 hours on a Sunday, it took me longer to download it all and try to get ingame and by the time I was ready I was out again.

I bet AoC is going to flop.
Look at Vanguard.
There's a difference for a game having potential and one actually using it..

I'm not so sure. I know quite a few friends who were initially excited about Warhammer Online but have since switched to Age of Conan as it's starting to look pretty decent. Personally though I might wait for the reviews before I buy -but I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

OMG VANGUARD!!! My EYESSSS!!!!!!!!!!1one!!!
I think Vanguard's catastrophic epic failure can only be compared to SWG :/ ...
I only hope AoC lives to its full potential ... I totally hate what they did to VG :( ... <looks sadly at his Collector's Edition VG box> .

I got 2 keys for the general closed beta today from a local role playing convention, so no level cap like the file planet open beta ones. I think about 500 keys were given away during this con, thrown into the masses for screaming "xyz is great!", for making urself ridiculous on various stands or awarded for good show fights to LARPers.

Can you share with us, will the LARPers have a secret sign to tell them apart from the rest of us and will that signing in some way disabilitate them for a few seconds while I rain blows on them?

Wear a loincloth, choose a suitably insulting quote from a Conan novel of your choice (bonus points if it's one of the original Robert E. Howard novels) and see if he starts to use "threatening" emotes.
Then bash him over the head as he's busy typing his response. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

What did they do to Vanguard? I got into beta but the game had to many problems when they went live that I didn't buy the game.

!?!?! I tried to decipher, but failed. But I'll guess your question and answer it ;) The keys were printed on small cards. A lot of ppl got several keys and traded them for pizza or gave them away to begging kids. i saw ppl giving their keys away for free on german forums, putting them on ebay for 1 euro or giving them back to codemasters (they made a special site for giving keys back)
btw. no need to spam me ingame, i gave my 2nd key to my friend :P __________________________________________________

!?!?! I tried to decipher, but failed. But I'll guess your question and answer it ;) The keys were printed on small cards. I don't know what all the LARPers do with their keys, I am no LARPer. I was only there for MMOs, AoC-keys and to test Jumpgate Evolution ^^ (btw. u have to grind in Jumpgate to "level up" -.-) A lot of ppl got several keys and traded them for pizza or gave them away to begging kids. i saw ppl giving their keys away for free on german forums, putting them on ebay for 1 euro or less.

Well, after releasing 20 gigs of space off my HD ( a.k.a. Uninstall VG) I forgot about it, back in march 07. Suddenly on december 07 I get a mail saying all VG accounts would be reopened for a short time so you can come back and check the changes.
I downloaded a 3.5 gig patch so VG was now a bigger lecherous cancer on my HD. I began playing and right away I realize the "Seam-less" zones were still not pretty much seamless and gameplay was akward and choppy. My 7800 GT was, as usual, barely able to play the game at crap performance, and we are talking about an almost 2 years old game :/. A couple freezes, one crash to desktop and well, not much changed in almost a year.
My main complaint about VG , and to keep this thread in rail is that as many others have stated, AoC MIGHT be another VG. They are promising a LOT of goodies wich honestly remind me of Darkfall ... I'm tired and jaded of companies promising a lot of stuff that they never deliver ... CCP is to me, the last company that actually tries to do the things they promise ... Even if it's bugged, crap, full of useless features or totally unasked for, at least they deliver ... something
I have hopped and jumped over so many fantasy MMORPG's the last 4 years that I'm jaded and honestly glum about the future of Fantasy MMO's :/
Let's see if AoC actually delivers ... something in the end I will always have EvE

I blame WoW for this. Blizzard has created an unrealistic expectation for any MMO company and investors that want to create a new MMO. I estimate we won't see a new successful MMO for several years at least. Investors are going to want a game that pulls in millions of subscribers and in order to do that an MMO company needs to release a game that bests WoW in quality and playability. Unfortunately there are very few companies that have the resources that Blizzard has. --- My cat Putter approves of this post. Be a Ninja! I played this at the gamespot pvp weekend in which the pvp minigames where only enabled and you could try out all the classes at lvl20.
I must say that I was impressed. Usually you can narrow down to 2 classes which you wanna play when the game goes live. AoC has like 6 of them. I think the game has lot of potential. The combat system and the classes totally rock.
pre-ordered the game... ---

Here's an interesting point of comparison of Age of Conan vs Warhammer Online.
From that short clip it seems pretty obvious which game has the upper-hand in terms of innovative gameplay while the other looks much like any other fantasy MMO.

Thank god for roleplaying, well at least internally, just looking at these things detached they looked awful, sure Conan looked more realistic but do I want to fight winged demons every 3 meters?
I'd forgotten how much I hate YouTube commentary too, where do all these illiterate morons come from?

Frak me.
I lied.
AoC looks like it's the new Vanguard/Dark and Light, before anybody played the games, of course. Hype=fail.
Applied for Beta...doubt I'll get in. I won't be bothered to give fileshare money just for a Conan beta. I can wait until I hear from people after launch.

The success of WoW isn't because WoW is made any better, or more playable than any other MMO. The success of WoW is because Blizzard made it and Blizzard has an enormous fanbase. It's not like the MMO fanbase was enormous and blizzard released a product which captured them all, the sum of all the major MMOs was never 8 million+. Blizzard brought their enormous worldwide fanbase to MMOs.
I say this as though it's a negative, but it's a net positive to the MMO market. Interest in WoW will fade, and some people may even check out another MMO. In fact, it's nice that WoW is so par-ish and not actually better than the other MMOs. It introduces 8+ million people to a par MMO, so when they try another MMO they aren't disappointed and stick with the genre.
