When I start EVE up in the login screen, I get a message that says I don't have any Audio Drivers installed, and that sound will not play. Even though I have a Realtek HD Audio driver installed, no matter what I can seem to fiddle with it doesn't acknowledge it. I did notice that it cannot recognize that Realtek driver as the output driver, just "Direct Sound".
Any suggestions/thoughts?

Do you have XP SP3? If so look up kb835221. |

I'm having this exact same problem actually as of only a few hours ago.
In fact, I was running one instance of Eve, and the sound was fine, then I went to load another for my alt and I get this problem. It happend straight out of the blue and everything was working fine yesterday and I haven't changed or updated anything.
Now every time I've tried to go into the game I get this problem. I've tried re-installing my AC97 drivers to no avail, now I'm going to re-install Eve and see how that goes

I have this same problem that just started today. It says "Audio Drivers Not Detected, Sound System Will Not Be Activated, Please Make Sure You Have Audio Drivers Installed"
Sound works on every other game I've tried. I even uninstalled and reinstalled drivers and uninstalled and reinstalled EVE but keep getting the same message.

Myself personally, I have not had any windows updates installed recently. Nor have I made any changes from yesterday to today. Sound was working fine yesterday and today when I logged on, I get that same message that others are getting.

If a Windows update is the case, what steps can we take to fix this?

Don't count your chickens yet.
You might want to update your Realtek HD drivers, current version is 1.91 (27 April 2008). ____________ Blue Binary |

I'm positive that my audio drivers are updated to the latest, but I'll double check (Again, when I get home >.>)

Try deleting the file "pc.dat" in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings" directory. It will be recreated when you start Eve. |

Did this, and I still get the message. Also, that "pc.date" file doesn't return after I move it to the recycle bin. |

I assume sound works perfectly well in other games?
Verify DirectSound is working: WindowsKey + R to get the Run dialog and type "dxdiag" without quotes. Select the "sound1" tab and test DirectSound.
If the problem only occurs with Eve then file a bug report.
Strange that 3 of you have the same problem within days of each other. Maybe a background process on your computer was updated recently (firewall, anti-virus, system settings protector, etc.), that is conflicting with the detection of the drivers. |

Sound is working perfectly in all other games.
It just doesn't see the Realtek HD driver as the output driver, just the output device. Know anything about that? |

Blue Binary, thanks for your suggestions. I tried them all but it didn't fix the problem.
Skye, I am having exactly the same problems as you are describing. Audio works fine on all other applications and on all other games. Just not working on EVE. |

Done some digging.
Open My Computer --> Control Panel --> Sound and Audio Devices --> "Audio" tab. Make sure your RealTek HD is default output device.
Are you using a USB/Bluetooth headset? Other threads with the same problem:

My Realtek HD audio drivers are the only option I have for my output device, so that can't be the issue :-(
And thanks for your suggestions thus far :-) |

I checked and RealTek HD is default output device.
I've never used nor do I have a headset to play EVE. I've always just used regular speakers for sound.
I've been messing with this for days now and feel ready to give up. EVE or any other game for that matter, just isn't the same for me without sound.
I've got the Age of Conan beta which I guess I'll go play for a while. Its got fantastic sound. |

Holy crap!
So I put in my USB headset. . .changed the settings to get music out of the headset. . .heard the music.
Good.
With the USB headset still plugged in, I changed the sound back to Realtek HD. Surprise! Sound comes out! Even when I removed the headset from the computer, sound still works!
Genius! A little bit weird, but still genius! Thanks for the tip! |

I don't have a USB headset. So would I need to go out and buy one to try and see if this fixes it? |

Because I haven't had to use the USB headset since, I would suggest finding a friend that you can borrow it from. Just plug it in before you run EVE, set the sound setting to come out of your headset, then unplug your headset and change the setting. . .should work just fine :-)

I submitted a bug report to CCP and they requested a Logserver file which I sent them. We'll see what steps they take to remedy this. This is a problem with CCP, not yours, mine or anyones else's computer or hardware/software issue.

I would also strongly recommends including a DxDiag file in your bug report, if you haven't already. ____________________________ I break things.

Still no fix for the audio problem. Submitted all necessary info into bug report and its been over a week that I've been without audio on EVE. This is no fun. I don't know how some of you guys like playing without audio. It ruins it for me.
Anyhow, these are the messages I'm getting when I log in.
1st pop up box - Audio drivers not detected. Sound system will not be activated. Please make sure you have audio drivers installed.
2nd pop up box (which I didn't have this pop up originally) - Audio hardware acceleration not detected The sound system will use only software channels until you get at least 12 hardware channels to work on your computer.
Please make sure you have correct audio drivers installed.

I am having the same problem with my Realtek HD Audio on Vista SP1, however if I untick the enable audio and then retick it the sound works fine.
Not entirely sure what is going on with it but I have never had an issue on my previous laptop with a similar Realtek HD Audio on XP SP2.
Let me know if unticking and then reticking works for anyone else?

Jygar, finally! Thank you very much, it worked! After clicking and unclicking about 5 or 6 times I stopped getting the error codes and the audio started working! I have XP SP2.
Its the good folks like you in this community that keeps EVE up and running. I wish I could say the same for CCP and the devs.

This seemed to happen to me when I changed the audio source in-game from my USB headphones to the RealTek speakers. When I tried to starting the game again I kept getting that error. So I closed the game, plugged my headphones back in, and restarted the game. The sound worked fine through the headphones, so I quit the game, unplugged the headphones, started it again and the RealTek audio worked fine.

"Direct Sound" means that the game will use whatever sound the system is using. Besides, Realtek HD audio has a long history of problems with Eve, read here. I have Realtek audio and use it without hardware acceleration, without problems. Of course, sometimes it misses some of the effects, but I can live without it. I prefer that than a BSOD when I engage in combat My advice would be: open DXDiag (Start > Run > dxdiag [Enter]) and check there if you have the audio setup correct. Also check the sound control panel and the device manager to see if the system is using the correct hardware. ----

Don't forget that we can only fix issues by putting out a patch. That means we need to get reports of the problem, find the cause, code a fix, test and verify the fix, then add the fix to the next scheduled patch. This process takes time. ____________________________ I break things.
