A few days ago I did my first level 4 mission solo ("Vengeance").
What a shock ...
I found level 3s quite easy in a Hurricane but this was hard work even in a Maelstrom - seven hours it took me.
After killing over 10 BS, 10 BC, and 30 cruisers (getting 30KM distance was interesting), there was that nice Mr.Moon at the end who just would not die.
The arties had little affect on his shield, torps were not much help. So in the end I loaded up 8 large ACs with EMP and got within 8KM of him - this then caused his shields to slowly fail, until I had him in armor at last. He died soon afterwards.

Vengeance is one of those missions that can be really tough for people with poor skills because Moon likes to dish out the one damage you're not tanked for.
For your Maelstrom, I recommend working an afterburner into your setup so you can easily get out to 50kms, then you'll be able to kite the tougher missions while keeping everything in your optimal. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

LOL@ seven hours. I hope you learned from that you aren't ready for level 4. Just think how many l3 missions, including probably storylines, you could have done in that seven hours.

7 hours is a bit harsh. I don't have much more than 6M SP atm and I can get to that last rat within about 20-30 min.
Then I usually refit an afterburner a webber and a nos.
The AB helps getting and staying in range (well once it's webbed it wont matter much) the nos lowers the chance of it using it's uber shield booster and from close range i can finally get enough dmg in to overcome its tank even if it uses its shield booster.
I tried T2 missiles on it but after a hwile, I just settled for AB/web/nos/torps.
flying a regular T2 fitted raven btw.

7 hours that is dedication.. I would say keep doing level 4Ęs and see where you stand I know at first it will take you few hours to do 1 mission its better to be over cautious then sitting in your pod.
PS I have helped a few people that have been doing level 4Ęs for awhile just kill Moon Gratz for soloing him.

Yeah, you get quite a few ppl asking for help with that named guy at the end I have noticed. First time I did that mission, I was in a gang with 2 drakes and a domi lol, that wasn't so bad as he went down pretty fast.

Once I was within 10K or so, I was close enough that I could tank his missiles, because got two EM hardeners.

I always fit an AB, so no worries there.

I lolled too, afterwards.
Originally by: Tranka Verrane I hope you learned from that you aren't ready for level 4.
Maybe. The experience was worth it in the end, and I did complete the mission, but yeah it was just a bit too early. Need to fully train all the support skills and try again.
I certainly am ready for team level 4 mission running, which is fun.

All I was thinking at the time was that I didn't want to fail the mission and loose NPC corp standings.

I had asked for help right at the end. No one was near enough, except for a friend who said he come in a destroyer(!) but even he didn't get there until after I had finished the mission.
I'm glad, because figuring out how to kill Mr.Moon solo was very rewarding.

if you dont have them already, go get t2 medium drones and get some levels of drone interfacing and combat drone. The DPS they can put out if you're using the correct damage type makes a huge difference in breaking a tank like that

I'm in a player corp again now (joined yesterday), so that should not be a problem in future.

The first time I did this mission I found I couldn't do enough dps to break his tank. So I just chased him around for a while to keep him at optimal range for guns and eventually he turned round and started MWDing back to the spawn area. After this, he stopped shield boosting and I was able to kill him relatively easily. Don't know if it was bugged or he ran out of cap.

A rather foolproof way to get him if you are using missiles (with low sp) is to fit torp launchers, maybe cn ammo, a target painter and an afterburner. As many PDS as u need for that to fit and ofc some hardeners, then fly towards him and start hammering torps into him. works with cruise missiles as well, but getting close is really important to make defenders less useful. (he wont aggro you until you are about 20k away from him as long as you don't do anything but fly towards him)

Interesting, I didn't think NPCs could run out of cap.

I've only got 3.45M SP and I'm soloing Vengeance in a Raven just fine. There's a Trick to doing this mission. It involves Torps, and Drones. I'll let you work out the rest ;)

So you know a little trick with drones and torps but don't know how a TP afects torps?
Torps have a huge explosion radius thus they work better on bigger targets. TPs make targets bigger. |

Let me know how you get on with Mr.Moon.

Drones help but had limited success for torps, but then I am neither Gallente nor Caldari.
The trick, of course, is to have the skills for the weapons you use all the way up to 4 and to know how those weapons behave at different ranges.

Edited by: GB Man on 02/05/2008 10:34:28 Edited by: GB Man on 02/05/2008 10:32:51 I did a little looking into it after I posted that and found out exactly how they helped. I wasn't aware what Target Painters actually did as i never fiddled with them. That being said. Target painters will not help you vs BS.
The Key to doing this mission on a low budget is actually having some time spent into drone skills. In particular, Scout Drone Operation. IV is the magic number as you can use a Drone Link Augmentor for some extra range. But You can usually get close enough with 35km (Scout drone III). You'll also want at least drones III or IV so that you have enough to keep him occupied until you can catch up. You'll probably want to use your normal Fitting until everything else is dead, then leave, refit for maximum damage and Kinetic Resistance, and come back.
The trick is to sick your drones on him before he gets a chance to target you, this will cause him to target the drones. Since he is an Orbiting Rat, he will try his hardest to get away from whatever he's targetting, when your drones catch up to him and start flying circles around him, he is more or less forced to sit and spin. If he kills a drone, send out another and hope that it keeps him occupied until you close up on him. Now that you are ontop of him, reel your drones in and torp away. NOS if you got it. Just let 'er rip.
At this point it's amazingly simple to kill him. If your a raven, I would recommend 3-4 BCS, 6 Torps, and any Overdrive injector just to be on the safe side so he doesn't wriggle away from you. he only does Kinetic damage so 2 shield hardeners is all you really need.
The Magic number seems to be 450+ dps. I simply wasn't able to break his tank with less than that with missiles.
But. Missiles or not. Drones are the trick. If you sick your drones on a Rat that orbits a long ways off and the rat targets the drones, it will confuse the crap out of him. Get in close, finish him off.
PS. Most of my missile skills are actually 2 :P |

Yup. I just looked him up.
Ahh. Well then fit out EM reistance :P
You'll also want to be doing Explosive Damage to him. Moon is defiantly not as hard as Rachen. But you should be able to kill him just the same. He's also a bit faster. So a Web might be in your best interest as well. He's got a lower Sig radius than Rachen as well. So the Target painter would be helpful here if your using torps. |

Mysuna has a shield booster that he uses every 10 seconds, recharging 1000 shield hp. |

"the finger" for those who say you're not "ready" for lvl 4 missions @ 5 million sp
the first time i finished vengence it took me about 2 hours from start to finish, @ 2.5 million sp... prior to that i tried for about 6-7 hours.
to kill the boss simply afterburner and get within 1km and shoot at him with torps. that way his defenders won't work, and after maybe 10 minutes (torpedo lvl 1, all other missile skills @ lvl 2-3) he'll go boom
that, or you can sit in station and skill up for the next year and you'll be "ready"... |

I have not yet had this mission, but I assume from all the close range torp talk that a Domi with T2 meds or T1 heavies and blasters up close would do the job as well. Defenders don't work against hybrid ammo. |

Edited by: Morgan LeJeffe on 02/05/2008 20:31:03 Edited by: Morgan LeJeffe on 02/05/2008 20:30:09 I finally succesfully soloed Vengeance (Gurista) the day before yesterday without having to call for back up. I've experienced no real difficulty in my Raven (all T2 modules) with the rest of the mission, but good old Rachen always was able to rep on me, even while swarmed by 5 Vespa IIs. After several encounters previously, this morning I think I hit upon the way to run pocket 3. Using CN Wrath's, I moved into maximum lock-on range to the sentry towers while killing the cruisers and frigs. Once in range, I destroyed the the towers and then rachen's wingman (the second Raven). Leaving only Rachen alive, I warped to a station, swapped out one of my hardeners for a t2 afterburner and went back out to reengage. Upon warping in, i kicked on the AB and at 65 km, i sicked my drones on him. To my pleasure, he targeted the drones and ignored me. It's funny watching someone (even an npc) try to kill medium drones with a torpedo. Well, as he busied himself with my drones, I was able to close to within Fury range and make short work of him. It cost me a quarter mil to replace the one drone he killed, but at a 2.5 mil bounty, i'll take that kind of return any day.
BTW, this character did not run the mission, it was my primary character who is all combat. |
