Ok I wonder what just happened. Here I was happily hunting rats in a 0.4 system, then suddenly I meet these nice 35K rats who suddenly open fire on me with missiles. Since when did 35K rats have missiles? I can't recall ever seeing that before. So either I'm blind or someone just gave the rats a MAJOR overhaul.

What are you on, cruisers have been using missiles since they got introduced before retail.

Blood Arch Engraver 35k ==> they use widowmakers (heavy thermic) Angel Predators 35k ==> they use widowmakers too Serpentis Drug Baron 35k ==> they use havocs (heavy explosive) Sansha's Ravager 35k ==> they use widowmakers Guristas Ascriber 35k ==> they use havocs.
Nothing new here. It's been like that for a long time.

Missiles? Yup... I think the minimum Guristas with a launcher is 8500 even.

I know the guristas have 10ks that shoot missiles. Don't think I've seen an 8.5k or he looked a lot like a 10k. The kestrels take a range anywhere between 8 and 12k, while the merlins hit the 15k mark. I think I may have even seen a kestrel at 15. Ascribers are a little rough... but man those erasers are mean. very, very, very mean.
Sure wish point defense was in place... or at the very least defenders worked better. <sigh>

Yup, my blown up Tristan confirms the existence of 10k rats with missiles. And they like traveling in rather large waves, too... :/
I'm still trying to figure out how to fight them. I haven't come up with anything apart from scaling up to a Cruiser, eh. --- Mining & Transport - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards

it is pretty frustrating the lack of defense vs. missiles. In general that lack of defense is felt everywhere. Hence why everyone equips MWD's on their ships... <sigh>
If I had one complaint about EvE, it would be their missile warfare.

Since Castor?
Dunno what rats you mean, but before castor the only Serpentis rats that fired missiles were the 40 (Vexor) and 50k (Thorax) ones. I was so jealous... I wanted a Thorax with missile launchers. I still do!

Something happened since last patch, either their RoF went up or their range did, I usually take out a score of cruisers in my frigate with little trouble, last time around there truly were havoc and a shiny new kestrel...

NPC ranges seem to not follow rules. Seen Bloowclaws, Flamesbursts and Sabertooths go well over 50km, and heavies out to 90km.

I always find it amusing when an NPC frigate can lock onto my thorax from 80 KM out... Then once it's within 60 KM or so hit me with missiles.
As for the 40K cruisers firing missiles, I only mind when the NPC cruiser is of a type that shouldn't be able to fire missiles, thats when it bothers me. Not cuz it's too hard, but because it breaks my immersion a bit and reminds me that I'm basically fighting glorified drones.
Could be worse though, CCP could remove cruiser spawns from empire space again the way it used to be... That was so boring... MY eyes light up now when an NPC cruiser enters the slaughterhouse hehe :)

when you see an npc flying a ship that resembles a player ship- don't think of it as if the rat is flying the same model that the players are. the npc pirates are all flying modified versions of player ships- or tech2 versions (which all have capabilities far better than the player versions)

there was only a brief period of time when cruiser spawns in highsec poi's were removed after the castor patch- then they were put back. but to answer the original poster- npc cruisers and frigates have been able to launch missiles since release may 2003. they always have depending on the race that they represented, and in the early days (way before the highways were added to game) even the rat frigates at gates would fire missiles at you- thank your indi's that it was toned down;)

@ W1rlW1nd
No worries :) I played back when retail first hit the shelves :) I know how to fool my mind into not minding thoraxes with missiles ;) But once in a while it still bugs me... Not enough to really care though, I just smile and nod and blast it to smitherines.
But I still stand by my comment about empire space without cruisers... Back 7+ months ago before castor, it sucked to have to run 30+ jumps to find a good 40K cruiser rat spawn in 0.0... It wasn't worth the trip for me playing solo due to my odd game hours :) If something happened to me out there, thats a long way to go through 0.0 space in a pod... to say nothing of ammo shortages and no place to keep my loot after a few good hours of hunting. Now I can hunt 40K rats with a station in the system.
And when I got buddies online I can still go out to 0.0 for the really big game hunting :)
MUCH better than before :)

For the "n"th time NPCs aren't ships like we know them, they are drones that have ship figures but they work totally different, CCP can put what ever stats they see fit without changing the stats of "real" ships!
@Karasu: Be prepared to get a missile fired on your ship anytime anywhere, best defence is good SB (smartbomb) managment IMHO; and don't use defender missiles, with their low A.I. (do they have any?) they will only make you mad!..

They key is to continually outrun the missiles (dont ever try that in a tristan, though ). With orbit being finally fixed, id have to try large crowds again with turrets, apart from that you can just orbit at 25km lobbing missiles back at them (not that its worth the money, but its fun )

Prophets, which is a rather "small" rat, usually fires missiles at me.
Not that my omen cares much, it tickles. If they are lucky, like when they have 5 raiders with them to help, the prophet get some missiles in on me, but they barely tickle my ship. All while my drones are flying out there to take care of em, and I mine along in calm and peace.

150mm rails, iron ammo, 20km orbit. Use MWD if needed to make sure you stay at the 19-20km range. Pray the missiles dont reach you. Go make a cup of coffee or something, takes a while.

8.5k Sansha's Enslavers fire missiles. They can do up to 132 hit points damage in one strike. The solution is to install a Heat Dissipation field in a mid slot then the most they can do is 62hp. Really Darwinian selection ought to have stopped them using missiles by now in my hunting ground since I know the sods by name and they go first.
Last night there was three Enslavers and a Butcher (11.5k). I took the Enslavers out first which probably left the Butcher wondering why it was being ignored. -- (Battle hardened miner)

I could swear I was one of the people who started that rumor back one week after retail :)
Yep glorified drones they be :) Anyone from the days of early retail will note that NPC rats, and your drones had the same hud indicator (+ sign).
I kinda wish CCP would change the shape of the hud indicator though to the brackets players get. I know it would cause some newbish types to target players... But I think the fact that I know those are drones before I even roll my mouse over em is a bit disapointing. But ah, what do I know... Lord knows if CCP did what I suggest people would whine and ***** all day long cuz some jerkoff named himself Serpentis Smuggler and newbs shot at him... causing all kinds of grief :)
