Edited by: Able Maldonado on 06/05/2008 16:26:09 As a lot of payers do, I spend a lot of my free time playing EVE. I would say I try to log on for at least 3-4 hours a day when mixed in with RL duties/social activities. I have been playing since 2004 and have no intention of quiting or lowering my play time. I know there are people who play a lot more, but that is irrelevant here. I am trying to preface this with the understanding that to many of us, EVE is a little more than 'just a game'. More of a ritual, tradition or a comfort comes to mind. Really though, it's an awesome game created for people who want to be ensconced in it.
So I am thinking of moving in with my gf. We've had the personal space conversation which followed by me saying:
"Oh, there is just one more thing. I play EVE a lot."
As she replied, "Oh you mean that video game? Thats not a problem." I knew she had no idea what I was talking about or how involved with this "video game" I actually was.
Anyway, I realize there are a few choices here. I could just play to my hearts content, brushing off any distractions as feeble minded blather or I could attempt to explain the game and it's complexity in a short summary.

I'll be honest, my girl thinks it's pretty weird. Then I get made fun of when my roommates see me with my headset on. I tell them it's no different than them being on their Xbox with a headset.
It doesn't help that there's been a number of times that my girl and I have been getting intimate and a skill finishes training, causing the EVEMon voice to tell me a skill is done. That's just weird, it takes a second to get the mood back! |

I always introduce it as a game and then start comparing it to other MMO's out there. Sci-fi spaceship game where the players are in extremely large amounts of control of what happens in the game.
If she knows anything about other MMO's/games in general you can make comparisons such as level-less system, 98% market controlled by players and their own manufacturing (all that stuff), "sand-box" play style (I like to point out the Pleasurehub as a form of making in-game money for an extreme =P), and the pvp is obviously a great aspect.
Whenever I explain it to someone I systematically jump around in no systematic order of topics. |

Yeah, she won't think it's ok for long. Most girls hate eve, even when they don't understand what it is, or maybe because they don't understand it. Myself and a bud have wives that will let us play video games, watch tv or what ever with out time, but playing eve? No. I only play when the wife is not home cause she hates eve that much and suddenly every disagreement is about eve. So it's better if the two never mix. |

She's quite happy about EVE, I don't surf p0rn ( much ), I don't spend cash on stupid hobbies and/or a new game every month ( apart EVE-Store stuff ) and she knows where to find me. Convenient for her and me.

Edited by: Franco Caruso on 06/05/2008 17:03:19 Nah ... what I have figured out is that if it doesn't interest her as long as it doesn't compete with her ( time and attention wise ) you are a-ok !
If you have idle time, bug her. Talk about non EVE-Online related stuff. If you afk travel, instead of surfing the net or the forums, give her some attention ( in whichever form you deem appropriate ) As long as she knows she is #1 on your priority list, things will go smooth.
If you just move in with her and she does not know EVE-Online at all just show her around. She needs to know the enemy to evaluate for herself how much of a threat it/she is. I think that is very important.
Our, male home sapiens, words are superflu and have no weight when it comes to explaining a potential threat to a relationship with the female counterpart. Let her figure out by herself that EVE-Online is just a game.

Don't introduce it as a game, introduce it as a hobby or even a sport. Make sure she understands that it requires significant blocks of time (it's hard to do much in less than an hour), and reassure her that she's not in competition with the game. You can compare playing it to playing in a team game like football or cricket - no, you won't always be willing to stop playing just whenever she wants: the rest of the team are depending on you.
Offering to get her an account to play alongside with you is a good move. Even if she doesn't want to, she'll be encouraged that it's not something you're doing to get away from her. |

it all depends on the woman...
i had one gf a while back who DESPISED computer games of all sorts. i could only play on "nights off" and couldn't talk about it at all. i had to make up all sorts of stories for what i did for 4 hours here and there... it felt like i was living in the closet, so to speak. but she was hot, so i put up with it. lol, silly me.
a while later i met a woman who was into sci-fi and all sorts of cool stuff. one night after dinner at my place i literally said "excuse me for a minute, but i need to go park a spaceship." she looked at me like "what the f are u talking about??" and i said "come here, i'll show you..." the game wasn't for her at all (she said it looked waaaay too complicated) but she thought the graphics were amazing and was totally cool with me playing a few nights a week while she was out with her friends.
so, like most everything in life, it depends...

Edited by: Jorah Vulture on 06/05/2008 17:39:29 Well I don't like what I do in these situations.
Even though I don't play that much (2 hours a day) I don't like telling girls I play online games. They don't understand it at all, specially in my age range (Been playing them since I was 12, I'm 18).
When they talk about how much are her friends addicted to games I just pretend not to hear it and quickly change the topic :P With real people I prefer to talk about my other hobbies (juggling, card magic...) |

I was in exactly the Op's position a year ago. I had lived on my own for a large number of years (blissfully) and played EVE pretty much every spare hour I had. When we decided to move in together I was up front and said that I played EVE a lot, but it was only when we moved in that "a lot" actually had some meaning to her.
Instead of trying to get her to like it by explaining it in detail I should have used Xennith's line:
Originally by: Xennith
"Its a game where everyone flies spaceships and shoots each other. you cant pause it, and yes i do need this headset on. Yes i know i look silly. Ill do it in a minute, just let me dock up..."
She is not into anything computer related and couldn't grasp my attempt to rationalise what EVE meant to me, and how much enjoyment I got from it. I think my approach was wrong from the beginning though. If I could go back a year I would be very unpfront and explain exactly how much I play, to the hour. Also, I'd explain that this probably wouldn't change a massive amount when we did live together. After all, how many hours does she spend in front of the TV?
12 months later and things are much better. I have certain nights scheduled in when I will be online and she's not allowed to distract me, and there are other times when I'll be playing but if she needs me I'll log off.

I've been with my wife for 10 years and have been playing online games for almost that amount of time.
It all started off with a little counter strike.. she couldn't believe I would "practice a video game with people?" until I started winning money at LAN tournaments.
Once we had our first child I stopped playing online games for a while until a friend of mine introduced me to WoW. Seeing as my son was already 2yrs old I had no issues with the wife as long as I played during the night.
Now I've been playing EvE for almost 2 yrs and my god, the fights are numerous, funny, and completely useless. Add in another child (now 1 month old) and the whole "Wait, I need to dock" just causes the biggest problems.
In short, my wife does not, will not and does not want to understand my obsession with EvE no matter how much I try to explain. It's come down to my wife being completely against me playing but has basicallly come to the realization that the more she complains the less I'll listen.
Best of luck to you all!

Yeah the no pause is a major issue, when she wants my attention it's alway NOW not once I dock up. She hates when I say just let me dock up. I learned a few things though.
1. Play as much as you can when the wife isn't around. 2. Pleasure the wife first, then play 3. Cook dinner 4. Take the laptop to a buds to play there cause then you're just out with the buds 5. Tell her you're off to kill the husband (who plays eve and you know who he is but he doesn't know you know) of her cousin whom she hates. 6. Spend at least twice as much on flowers every months as you do on eve |

She said 'not a problem' because putting an obstacle in the way now may mean she doesn't get what she wants.
When you move and she thinks your settled she knows full well you're gonna do as your told.
If you explain it now or when you first move in and she'll be all attentive and seem interested. Try later down the line 'it'll be that silly little spaceship game'. She may even let you play and use it against you to get things done 'oh well you played EVE all Friday night'.
You can kid yourself that its going to be different. But unless it features in the female plan you've got no chance. If you think you're going to come in and say hello and not listen to her entire day in every little detail forget it. Oh and women who say they're not like that, it's all an act trust me.
The only way I would go would be low profile (same as EVE don't get noticed) don't even mention it. Sneak on when everything else is squared away and you may be able to carry on playing.
/start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

I played Eve, the missus played various flash games, the odd bit of Settlers. She saw the graphics and declared "I want to play that!"
Now I get podded if I don't do my household chores, and my wallet gets raided with alarming regularity.
As for explaining to a non-player, it's difficult. You can't pause the game. It's a game with 30k of other real people playing at once. Voice comms is mandatory (and sometimes amusing). It's real-time.
maybe this will help.

I am going through this same thing right now, having just moved in with my GF. Quite honestly, I see big problems for her on the horizon. She is another one who will make absolutley no attempt at understanding it what so ever. She also refuses the term "hobby" and will only refer to it as "the game"
She basically hates not just internet space ships, but my computer in general.
The bad side of it is, we work pretty different hours. Shes like 8-4, I do 11-7. So she has like 3 hours to herself everyday without me being home, to do what ever she wants. So by the time I get home, and want to relax, she is ready for "together" time the second I walk in the door.
To drill it down even further. She goes to be a lot earlier than I do, so, instead of me getting that time that she goes to bed to myself... NOOOOOO... I have to go lay down with her while she falls asleep ( weather or not we have sex is irrevelent, I still have to go lay down for a while )
So, as long as I go through all that, she is willing to tolerate it on weekends. :)

I only just started playing Eve a week or so ago, but already by boyfriend of two months is getting ratty about it. He calls it names like "waiting online" and repeatedly asks when I am going to "Go out to the battlefield and shoot something." He routinely complains that I am wasting my time doing it and I should play games/watch TV/"Go out". I fear there is nothing to be done - his mind is too small.

That's it, slowly now..., yup.. cool. Now deactivate the mining lasers, and head to the station. Unload the minerals and start over. Believe it or not, you do this for five hours a day and it'll make your skin more soft and cause all hair from neck downwards to fall out.

I find that the best way to justify playing is to take care of anything I could be asked to do BEFORE it comes up. Do the dishes, make the bed, take out the trash, walk the dog and cook some dinner without being asked and there isn't really much justification to complain when I sit down afterwards to play some Eve (or whatever game).
P.S. I sent my wife this thread to read. I hope she doesn't get far enough down to read that I posted this. ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/ |

I actually tried to explain to my wife about EVE since she and I have been together since day 1 of EVE and here I am 5+ years later and she still doesn't get it.
She's heard everything from "Not now woman, there is a war going on" to "I'll be there in a minute, I need to get out of lowsec and dock first".
She has even complained that I bark orders like a Drill Instructor and that if I was "nicer during combat I would get better results".

In truth there are truly 4 things that can happen:
1) Your wife / GF can be happy about your EVE obsession, either because she plays or is just good person and cares about your happiness (yeah right)
2) Your wife / GF can be neutral towards it as she realizes that while it may be frustrating that you spend so much doing something that she has no part in, individuals need time in which to satisfy their own needs and as such allowes you to continue in order to strengthen your relationship.
3) Your wife / GF can hate EVE but accept that it is an issue of contention, this usually will result in a slow build up of anger that usually results in you fighting, etc.
4) She leaves you because you play with internet spaceships
I've experienced 1, 3, and 4

I tried to get mine into EVE, but I couldn't convice her that the 'find random X' in the picture games she likes to mess with was the same as 'find random miner in a belt'. Mostly she takes whatever stance works best to get her way ( supprise! ) but lucky me she is pretty cool about it.
We finally worked out a deal on it. I normally cook and do dishes etc because, well, she can't cook for crap. So I get 'till 10pm w/out hassels on the nights I choose to play (hehe.. lets face it, most nights) and free day from bickering on Sat. Sunday she gets the comp hands down.
So far so good, but she did manage to throw in the 'if your on the computer, you get no say in whats on the TV' clause. I think I still get the short end of the stick having my EVE hours backlit by endless hours of Dr.G medical examiner/Amimal Police/*insert random RL medical show* |

My wife never understood my EVE obsession. Then one year she starts bugging me for a vacation to Europe. "Hey Honey, Iceland is NEAR Europe. Let's take a vacation there... in November." I nearly fell over when she agreed. After going to Fan Fest she started to show some interest in EVE and I helped her create a character. - bah, i had great expectations on you, but...
Seriously (although that conversation is real and actually happened), my wife approves EvE, something really amazing, and never had questioned the time i play it. i have few time to play, but when children go to bed and she watch tv...i'm free!!!
what is hilarious, is when my youngest son comes when i play ans says: shoot it! shoot it! at every ship he sees..then say, ah, when i play eve, i'll have to shoot you daddy, i'm better than you with videogames!!

If she gets mad, you can always tell her that...
- She will always know where you are. She doesn't have to worry that you are somewhere seedy, trying to pick up girls.
and
- The game cost $14.95. All in all that is a pretty inexpensive hobby. Compare it to going out to a bar once or twice a week and dropping $50 - $100 dollars a pop.
Works for me.

I have lots of accounts, play eve like an addict, and have a wife and family.
Some key things for bliss:
1) I can read stories to the kids while playing eve and even pvping.
2) I've taught my smallest kids how to type. I open a chat window to an alt in windowed mode, and they practice keyboarding while I rat or mine.
3) Always break for sex...always
4) keep a clean keyboard and wash those sweaty hands alot!
5) keep your hands warm in the winter ... I find that using a mouse a lot can give you cold fingers, and no gf wife likes a cold hug
6) my son loves legos and builds eve ships with them as I show him all the ships! His lego deimos is the talk of the kindergarten! All his friends love his lego ships!
7) now I shop online... I've never missed one of my wife's holiday gifts of bdays!
8) learn to do at home or office work while playing eve and mining or light pvp
9) do research for your wife or gf while playing eve... "Hey, you were talking about pergo floors? I just checked the website!"
10) always break for sex... did I mention that one?
11) plan eve off nites at random to surprise her that you are NOT playing
12) do housework while mining or moving a freighter... between one double cargo rigged hulk with cargo expanders I can do a load of laundry, the dishes, pay bills, etc...
13) read a book SHE loves! If your elite at playing eve and multitaksing, read one of her books for a change. Imagine the discussion with, "So what about that latest Maeve Binchy novel? Or what did you think of the main character in the Bridges of Madison County?"
Anyway, I get to live the dream of nice job, loving wife who lets me play eve whenever, and having a great family! I hope these tips help! "CEO and generally nice guy" |

1. Make SecondLife account 2. Find somewhere sufficiently wierd, but not disturbing enough to make her call the cops/convince her your totally broken. 3.Let her see you on it while your there, when confronted say 'well, I GUESS I could just stick to playing EVE instead' 4.Profit.
WARNING: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW HER TO EVER CREATE A SECONDLIFE ACCOUNT. DOING SO MAY RESULT IN HER SPENDING EVERY LAST BIT OF CURRENCY YOU CURRENTLY POSSESS ON CLOTHES, HAIR, JEWELERY, AND OTHER FASHION ACCESSORIES.

Laptops ftw. I play EVE, my wife watches real life crime stuff. I can half watch it so that I can at least hold a conversation too while doing whatever in EVE.
Always remember it is only a game, so if your wife really, really needs you to stop (yes, you can think of some mutually beneficial reasons here) just abandon it temporarily .... of course cloaks (while 0.0 ratting) help tremendously here.
Cheers, Ruf.

As long as you make time for your signifigant other everything will be just fine. Time management is key. We have all learned to juggle our Real Lives with EVE and when it comes to your signifigant other it's no different.
Randomly take her out to dinner, the Gym, the Movies, the Bar, even shopping (yes even shopping, I know..). Do things she likes to do so you can do what you like to do.
As long as you do that, and don't allow yourself to sit infront of the computer for days on end everything will be just fine.
At the very least she will allow you to do the things you enjoy because she cares for you.
If she does not chances are she does not truely care for you and is only looking to control you.
Balance in everything is the Key to Happiness.

When I met my fiance, my account was inactive at the time. A couple months ago, I reactivated my account and told her about it. At first she just shrugged it off as yet another game, being a gamer herself. When she'd ask what I was doing, I'd explain that I just needed to finish off killing one more thing then I could dock, or that I'm baiting some newb in to a trap.
She would just tell me to be careful and not get myself killed, then when I was done we'd have some alone time with each other. Few weeks ago though, she installed EVE on her computer and got a trial account to keep me company while I'm on. Now she has an active account, and keeps asking if she can buy me a CNR since she can afford it already.

When i'm developing a website or application instead, nothing is wrong but when i play a game... she has comment on it but i don't care. She learned to live with it :)
I just have to pay attention when she tells me something while i'm playing and that... i still have to master. I told her stuff about EVE... how piracy works, how a spaceship is more than just a spaceship, how much money can be involved in a fight etc etc... She got curious and asked me for a trial account, I gave her that, and now she plays EVE at random times... Random EliteÆs ôSkill training is completeö floored me. Overkills "Not now woman, there is a war going on" killed me for ten minutes.
There so many pages of funny stuff to relate to. This thread is awesome.
Once I was involved with a Dom and she totally understood that beating people was her thing and for me ... watching her toy with people, me exploring my interest or me playing EvE was mine. Since neither of us enjoy being submissive and she didnÆt play EvE à I accepted her girl toy and she accepted EvE.
So I know for a fact that there are hot smart woman out there with an appetite for computer savvy bad boys and get wet at the idea of satisfying their man while enjoys his game or plays with his servers.

I started playing this game shortly after my boyfriend. The reason was it looked beautiful and i'm a very visual person. The interface was a bit difficult to figure out, but after the trial I really fell for EVE. So we played together for a little while, me and my boyfriend, were in the same corp and played apart as well.
Now a year passes and he quits the game because he's bored and says it is no longer interesting for him. Me, I keep on playing. Now he's bugging me why i am playing this boring game. "Dont spent too many hours on it", "You know you can do better things with your time", it has gotten to the point where i would just be browsing the net and clicking a lot and he would be asking me from another room "Are you playing that stupid game again?"
Is he not getting enough attention or is he jealous or something? I mean WTF?!

the best way to explain eve that its very big peac eof space with only RL players. al 2gether on 1 server.
Show here a couple of movies.. so she gets an idea of what you do..
They main thing is to tell here this is your hobby this is what you do.. If she respects that there should be no problem.. but all in balance ofcourse.. when she is very negative towards gaming in general you prob have aproblem

I think if I'm honest, if you continue to spend 3-4 hours on eve per day, although she may be ok with it at first, it will soon develop into 'an issue'. I've been married for 7 years and gaming has caused many periods of conflict in our relationship.
The only way we've managed to deal with it is by me having two set nights a week were I can play on the PC and she can do her own thing. One night during the week and one night at the weekend works well as long as it's fixed so she can make plans. Of course you may think 2 nights just isnt enough, but you can still hop on eve when she's doing other things like washing her hair etc, or when the sleeping pills you slipped in her drink start to ckick in (joke).
I've just had a wee baby, and I can tell you those two set nights have gone out the window, so think yourself lucky :D

Now she's hooked on TF2 it's relatively easy to explain EVE as an online addiction :P

My GF hates eve, and her mom hates eve too, even though she has never even seen it. From what i can make out the reason GF's hate eve so much is because it deracts attention away from them. The would rather you did more meaningful things like... sit there all night watching TV with them. i have known people whos GF's have made them stop playing eve. Even one who met his GF on the internet, yet she cant understand how he can have friends on an internet game... I comes down to detracting attention again really.
The only reason my GF puts up with it is this... I am an independent person and I do what I like when i like. She is very much the same and has her own intrests. I would not get in the way of them, and i would leave her before she came in the way of any of mine.
Its worked out for 4 years :)

Despite what chicks say, they are anything but independant. Say as in the OP's original post, you as a player squeeze in 3-4 hours per day; unless this is matched or bettered in terms of time spent with the g/f they will view EvE as a threat.
Moreover, this threat can in no way be compared to any of the tripe they watch on TV because they don't have a clue about it nor willing to learn.
I am a manipulative SOB in relationships (but I remain sane and don't end up wasting cash/time on chicks that aren't worthy) so I would suggest something along the lines of this;
1. You want to move in but there are limits to the amount of comprimising you are willing to undertake.
2. You won't be spending as much money or time at the pub/krakhouse as many other b/f.
3. You have been playing and socializing with friends for four years, would she dump any of her friends for you?
4. If she gets narc'd off with you spending too much time playing EvE and moans all the time say that you don't think you are making her happy, perhaps it would be better if you went seperate ways. This, whilst savage, always works for me.
Why on earth do u want to move in with her? Living with chicks brings out the very worst in them..., and is counterintuitive to the type of relationship that a female actually wants out of a man i.e spontaneous, romantic etc.
Don't do it man!

Just show your gf and explain the things you do ingame. Thats what i did. My gf came to me one day and asked me about EVE, i tolde her to sit next to me and watch what i do. So she was just sitting next to me and i explain her all the stuff that i did. She is not a gamer but sometimes she just grabs herself a chair and sits next to me again watching what i do (sometimes she asks questions about what i am doing if i didnt already explain it). I do play EVE a lot but when i want some time with my gf (or she tells me that she wants some time with me, not playing EVE) i just shut down my pc so nothing disturbs us.

I been a fulltime gamer for the last 7 years, playing 10-15 hours a day, 7 days a week. There's a key for having relationship/RL friendship work when you play that much.
Don't lock yourself up in the game.
Play as much as you want, but make sure that when they call and want to do stuff, or when dinner calls, or when she want to see a movie.. that you log instantly.
If you keep saying "just 30mins, I'm finishing something", they'll grow bored and ****ed. If the game never gets in the way of their plans, you're solid and can play as much as you want (basicly).
I used to be GM in a game, and I used to be in a group that competed in the top of the world in games. Then after a break I realised how much RL you can actually fit inbetween the gaming sessions. In EVE you can simply solve that by fitting a cloak when going on ops. You need to log mid-op? Just safespot, cloak and log. Do it. Don't tell her to wait 30mins. For your own sake as much as hers. When EVE dies there's another game around the corner. When that dies another. And another. I lost count on how many MMO's I been through and there's no end to it.
Playing alot = fine. Locking yourself up in the game = bad. Above is a perfect example of why EVE > most MMO's, including WoW and the likes. With a cloak fitted you have no excuse (well, if lag permits) to not be able to log anywhere, anytime.

I've managed to mantain a long term relationship whilst playing EVE daily since 2005. Alot of this has been said in the thread already but here are my tips:
1.) Tell her Girls Don't play EVE. Especially not in your Corp/Alliance. I have muted Girls on TS/Vent as she once overheard a female voice from my earphones! 2.) Have a 'Log Off' time. Mine is 9pm, afterwhich I spend time with her. Sounds a bit under the thumb but it does work. Single guys out there won't understand the benefit of this. 3.) Explain you need to dock up to be able to come help her with something Which may take time. 4.) Explain the average age of an EVE player is 28. So it's not a bunch of kids your are talking to in chat rooms. 5.) There will be inevitable bad times ahead with her as she adjusts to something she will refuse to understand. At the darkest times, log off early if you can. RL really is more important than EVE Life. 6.) Remember no Girls play EVE....even if they do. 7.) Even if she is not interested talk to her (a little! Dont bore her) about what you do in EVE and what your friends are like. Silence and secwacy will make her suspect you are hiding something even though you are not. 8.) On Weekends make her breakfast in bed every now and again, instead of logging into EVE before she has even woken up. 9.) Never do middle of the night Skill Changes, time your skills accordingly so you change them during your 'game time'. 10.) Remember an Economic, Industrialist, Sci Fi internet Spaceship shooty pew pew video game is far less geeky than Dwarfs, Wizards and dragons. She will understand this.
That is all.

First of all, excellent topic, funny stuff mixed with good advice, lol.. Well I'll add a little bit of my personal experience too.
I've been dating my girlfriend for almost 5 months now, and I've been playing EVE for almost a year, so we met while I was in my obsession. I'm very lucky that she is understanding that I need "me" time and that EVE does require almost full attention at most times. It's all about compromise. We do have plans on moving in together next year and we both have agreed that there are times that are for her, and there are times that are for me. If your girl doesn't give you that free time or gives you crap every time you're online, then I think its time to find a better person, because that's sad. Relationships are 50/50. If you respect her time, then she should damn well respect yours.
It's also pretty important to say that EVE is NOT a priority. It's only a game. I understand that perfectly and if my girl needs me to help her with something or she needs to talk, I'm logging off without a second thought (although she would have to wait for me to dock up ).
Hopefully I can get her into the game as well. I would love for her to play with me, would be a dream come true. If she doesn't though, it's okay.
Oh yeah, also.. seriously.. if she wants action from you, log off.. (I say this but I pray that she will never want to mess around when I have a Moros in siege mode on a POS....) -------------------------------------------------- "With hard work and focus ye shall achieve." Unless stated otherwise, the opinions above do not reflect those of my corp or my alliance. Thx. >.> |

Each person has a hobby/activity they love to do and there is no reason you have to share it with anyone. Just like a buddy of mine will never get his girlfriend to understand/play/like Warhammer 40k, I have NO chance of getting my wife to play EVE. She has an aversion to video games that I can only compare to my own hate of Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy.
I have on some occasions tried to explain what I do in EVE to her, or i'll tell her stories about EVE, and she'll listen politely but eventually i get a glassy eyed look. Just like how I must look when she tries to explain to me the complexities of the relationship between Dr. Grey and Dr. McDreamy. There are times i sit and watch with her but secretly i'm DYING to go to the computer and launch some probes or kill some rats or create some mayhem.
Although i've found that sometimes I have to in a way "ask permission" to play EVE. Otherwise i'll be sitting there playing and she will subtly mention that trash needs to be taken out or a dog needs to be washed or something needs to be fixed. Maybe i'm not explaining this right. Just know you might be guilt tripped if it seems to her that you play EVE way too much.
If you haven't already, watch "Fever Pitch" (or better yet read the book.) I dream of electric sheep. |

Shes mildly intrested in Eve and tried it briefly, but it hasnt really gotten her - shes waiting for Ambulation - and the chance to design her own character :D

Uhhhh Like which ones?
All the ones I have read are either: 1. compromise. 2. try and compare it to another "guy" activity and then explain how much cheaper and safer it is. 3. try and get her into EVE or gaming in general.

You cannot explain eve... I have read thispost and all of the above applies, the good, the bad and the UGLY. I am trying to explain Eve to my husband, he wont have his own account and mines on my account!
When I first started two years ago, I hid it for about 6 weeks (he works shifts). So I have had all the nasty comments, now he asks if I am off to play or not. I play it as I find it more interesting than watching the TV.
I would recommend you get her to watch you for a bit, if she is not sci fi happy, then, try to point out the shopping and all the shiny ships you have, Premium Graphics FTW! And then make her an Amarr character (even shinier ships) and let her shoot you for a bit. LOL! Under no circumstances should you pod her. And if she likes it beware... You will end up doing the housework!

I play FPS's and EvE, with the ex I never really had to 'explain' myself playing the games. If at all possible I scheduled it around any activities she had - but not in a hiding cloak and dagger way. When she says "I'm going shopping with my sister and mother." just say back "I'll be playing EvE, call me if you need anything."
Little things like "if you need anything" or "let me know", also "I can meet up with you if you get bored" go a LOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG way.
Unfortunately it didn't work out - but at least it wasn't because of a game
Play whenever you have time and if she wants to spend time (you already live together, how much more time can you spend [rhetorical]) as long as it isn't an absorbinent amount - go for it and make her happy. Once the whole "I constantly need to be with you and by you and around you" phase is over, you'll have plenty of time to play EvE (Minus any children you may have as they are the great killer of all things personal [though funny as hell and worth it ])
tl;dr - Make her happy for a while, play in spare time, the touchy feely need to be there 100% of the time phase will pass then play to you pass out in your chair/couch/bed.

well, having just turned 18 and not exactly living with my gf, you gotta throw it like this:
1. tell her that eve is a game, not much else. 2. talk to her while playing, unless your in TS, even then, nod your head at the right moments :P 3. let her know eve aint all thats important, for me, letting her know she's important is right on teh spot. that and deathmetal, since she's an avid fan of that and trance :P
i seem to get my results just fine ----------------------------------------------- Come Home with your shield, or come home on it.

I didn't really have to explain it to my wife. She'd been nagging me for a long time saying I work too much and don't get any time to relax. That was the truth really. I'd either be working at work, working at home, or working her (yes, yes), so she told me to get a hobby.
Well, a year on and I'm happier for playing Eve, and she's happier too (yes, yes).
So in conclusion : my wife!=fail

my girlfriends name is eve, well evelyn and gets called eve, she is a non complicated lass, likes to watch soaps and the likes, i give her the tv remote, say go ahead, so she is fine most of the time.
When she does show interest in my game (remembers types of ships and the likes, gets really confused when she says is that your thorax, and its like no its my vigilant, or phobes etc) all i do when she is watching is name a ship after her, or somthing she would like, makes her most happy and even tracks there progress!
so far i have
smelly shuttle eves ranger - shuttle eves lightning - ares eves chariot - carrier
she asks what the ships do, like this one goes fast, she gives them names, if i follow and agree she is most happy and leaves me alone, been with her for 4 years now, so iv been playing longer than iv been with her, so she knew about it in advance :)

My wife does not mind me playing EVE at all, She likes the music and she knows that if she needs me for ANYTHING I will dock and leave the game, that last thing more then anything else helps her approve of the game.
Besides she has to know that you will pick her over the game at ANY time for ANY reason. **--------**--------------** While blood, carnage, and distruction may be my "happy place" that is nothing like the feeling I get while hauling 2 mill isk in goods thru low sec. |

you don't need to explain the game in its complexity, that'd take ages;
I have a better idea, just tell her it's a game that allows you a great deal of freedom and that you can be as bad or as good as you want; btw chicks love piracy because of the romantic element, so use that ------------------------------ We are all doomed! |

Fiance wants to end up doing piracy later on, but I'm a bit hesitant to take her on a run. I know that I'll end up having to grind out missions or something just to keep a large stock of ships ready for her.

Hmmm this bit about relationships pertaining to EVE players being 50:50 is BS imo.
Blokes are designed genetics upwards to be independant and sow the seed, girls are designed to seek security/family etc.
All I've heard is 'when my g/f needs my help with something'.
Is there ever an occassion that you need her help? (apart from the obvious)
Seems very one-sided to me. Is anyone in such a relationship that they can demand your girls immediate attention and gets it? __________________________________________

ive been going out with my gf for 2weeks and our convo ended up on the subject of games. (half her family play games) and i just told her straight out and she agreed ive always abandoned the game for RL (even in fleet battles on rare occasions) but i always make up for it in being online for quite awhile.
ive also played eve for 2years before i met up with her so i had a head start.

After a long time of dating my girl friend I moved in, in the same breath that I used to tell her I was moving in with her I told her that I had a mistress and she would be moving in with me as well. This caused some concern, even after I said her name was EVE. But she was kinda ok with it putting on brave face etc, but not quite knowing what to expect when her fiancee moves in with a mistress. Now after some time (3 yrs) she is toatlly cool with my mistress called EVE, hell she has got an account as well.
Just break it too her like that..... you come complete with your own mistress.

Hi, just noticed that there were no comments by EVE GF's here (my BF suggested i read this). Firstly quite funny, really enjoyed some of it.
My BF started playing EVE after we got together, so i grew to know the 'mistress' as he did, not that i understand too much, but i try!
A few of you have it right, giving time to the SO is vital! As long as i feel loved and appretiated its ok!
The worst thing was having my BF come home and go strait on EVE without talking to me (only happened on a few occasions), I need to know EVE isn't his first thought! Laptops are great, we can still spend time together doing our own stuff.
When telling her about EVE just be honnest, she will appreciate it. Compromise always helps as well!

First of all, trying to explain EVE to her is probably not going to be helpful unless she is already familiar with MMOs. You can still try to explain the game to her if you feel the need to, but at best she'll probably just pretend to be interested.
The fact that she said it's not a problem (for now) is already a big step forward. She recognizes it's something you enjoy doing, and as long as EVE doesn't get in the way of anything, you most likely won't run into any problems.
Now, the trick is to maintain this 'status quo'. The most important thing to keep in mind is showing her she's more important to you than the game is. I'm sure that sounds quite obvious, but it won't be as obvious when you're getting chased relentlessly by a hostile gang and trying to get your ship safe when your girlfriend asks you for company. "Just a minute or two, honey" might sound like a reasonable answer to you, but to her it'll look like you're giving the game more attention, and this is where the EVE vs. GF competition starts. From here on, it only goes downhill, and you'll either end up not playing EVE, or looking for a new girlfriend.
You have 3 main ways to avoid getting in this situation:
1 - Explain the basics of the game to her. As I said above, this is not likely to work if she doesn't have much interest in video games, but if you just manage to explain to her that in EVE there's no Pause button and you can actually lose things (even if just virtual), then she might be slightly more tolerant when you take a bit to get off the game.
2 - Exit the game immediately whenever necessary. This solution is the most healthy one for your relationship, but it also screws the most with your EVE habits, and it won't work that well if your GF nags you constantly. It may also lead to your GF nagging you for the sole purpose of getting you off EVE. Choosing this option will require to change your in-game activities to things you can abruptly stop doing. (such as high-sec mission-running or mining) If you're a low-sec/0.0 person, there's a few problems here, as most activities require you to stay online for long periods of time, in which case the solution is to take up non-essential roles. For example, if you're in a pvp gang, choose a fast, light ship that you can move away from hostile territory by yourself in case you have to log off in a hurry, and refrain from taking roles such as fleet commanding or scouting. Having your corp members know you may have to log off at any given time might reduce the damage caused from you vanishing from the game. (though it might also result in you getting kicked from the corp!)
3 - Set specific times for playing EVE. Basically, just designate a few hours every day/weekend/whatever in which you'll be playing EVE and you don't want your GF to disturb you. This works best if you match these playing times to when she's already doing other things by herself. (whether that be watching TV, going shopping, be at work, etc) Obviously, you don't want to go overboard, so no 12-hour EVE weekend marathons. As long as you're reasonable with what times you choose to play EVE, you shouldn't find problems getting her to agree.
All in all, it'll require some degree of sacrifice, but then again, you should have seen it coming when you decided to move in.
TL;DR Version: Don't neglect your GF, play EVE moderately, and all should be well.

LOL read all the comments:), i never had this issue cause i started playin the game when we were together. the only thing i had to make sure was tht she knows tht all the ppl i am talkin to are male(few corp mates with female char really put me in trouble, laylord u ***hole ), let here hear ur TS(sorry guys i nerver told u about tht ), washing dishes is a must plus cooking dinner for her give extra playtime credit( btw read this thread while doin tht). now after one and a half year of playin eve she is still ok with it, sometimes she listens to me talk about eve. when she sees me ****ed off cause of somethin in the game she comes to me and calms me down( after reading all the horror stories i was soo happy to have a gf who is soo cool plus extremely HOT), calls my corp mate my bf as a joke( raytruz thts u, bend over now ). the only tips i can give u is to tell her when she is in a good mood plus dont tell her in a way tht she will think eve is more important then her, bring out the subject of hobbies( as lot of others have suggested) and then tell her u prefer to play mmog cause u enjoy games plus they cost less then other hobbies. then tell her u r playin eve nowadays in ur SPARE time and a lil bit about it, not too much( top 30 secs). see her reaction and then see wht to do next.i think its better if u let her digest this info first before u give out anymore. anyways best of luck.

I used to have a stressful job, Security in a shopping mall. Trying not to kick the sh*t out of those gobby little kids meant I was often wound up tighter than a coiled spring when I got home. I told my wife that Eve was a way to relieve the stress by taking it out on a few pixels on screen rather than blow up in an all-out row with her.
I've since divorced her and my new gf is fine with me playing Eve. She understands that having my own space now and then is important.

Pointless past argument (one of many):-
GF > Computers are so anti-social... Me > (over shoulder) Computers aren't nearly as anti-social as watching the telly, babe... GF > What? How? TV is much more sociable; you sit and watch it together.. Me > Yeah, but you don't actually speak to each other. At least I'm talking to people... GF > ...
Pointless past proposal:-
Me > Babe, you should just try Eve! It really is cool, you'd like it... GF > Nah! You're always just flying around and looking at lists and stuff. That's boring. I want to just jump in and kill things. Me > Well there is shooting stuff as well. Really.. try it and see.. GF > Nah! Spaceships are definitely a boy thing..
(Possible/Desperate) Solution to growing tension:-
Me > Hey babe, you enjoyed dungeon siege...? GF > Yeah that was fun.. Me > And Morrowind...? GF > Yeah? Me > Well why don't you try out WoW, it seems really similar to those? GF > Urrm. Yeah maybe I could.
Emergence of new problem:-
Me > So hmm... babe, when can I get online...? I think I need to change skills...? GF > Oh... in a minute (ffs); it's AB honor weekend ya'know... Me > ....
Moral:-
Gamer girls sound cool in principle but be careful what you wish for, you might create a monster.

Indeed. My ex-gf was a gamer. We never had excatly this same problem because I always fixed a PC for her. She even was really understanding when I was struggling with nasty MMo addiction, twice. She never played EVE but I introduced her to SWG, ATITD and WOW. Playing together was lots of fun, but most of the other aspects of relationship didnt really work. To name few things: housework and sex life really suffered because of this. And in long run it was just too much.
My new gf is not interested in computers at all but she understands that I need my own time and as long as I dont play too much and still do stuff with her this is not a problem. This limits quite much ofc, I get to play hour or two on weekdays, more on weekends of course. But I dont really see myself joing a corp again. Well its better that way, in the end this is still just a game. MMO addction == bad Although I am slowly introducing her to EVE. She sits on my lap quite often while I massage her when doing semi-afk mining/salvaging/missioning. She also gets to name my ships if she is nearby. Biggest accomplish so far is that I got her to move the ore from barge to a jettisoned can while I was doing the dishes.

She's quite happy about EVE, I don't surf p0rn ( much ), I don't spend cash on stupid hobbies and/or a new game every month ( apart EVE-Store stuff ) and she knows where to find me. Convenient for her and me.

If you work out the time your mrs spends watching soaps, "lifestyle" programmes etc, it will probably be more than youe eve play time anway. Of course, she wont accept the logic of that, but it is likely to be true or thereabouts!
TBH you just have to set days / times when she doesnt object- I play and babysit whilst she goes to the gym- we're both winners on those days. She still throws irrational fits occasionally though and I fear thats unavoidable.

My wife is totally computer illiterate ( the bliss ). I do not need to defend or explain EVE-Online anymore ... we have hacked out an agreement. 2 evenings a week, I don't play but go out with her, I go shopping on saturdays and can play the rest of the time.
She's quite happy about EVE, I don't surf p0rn ( much ), I don't spend cash on stupid hobbies and/or a new game every month ( apart EVE-Store stuff ) and she knows where to find me. Convenient for her and me.
Same, my wife rather have me play games and be throwing "insert item here" then out at bar. Its good to be king!

This is for you and all the others who have to 'ask' for Eve time...
Get out of the relationship... just go. Find someone who shares your interests (for the ladies, you need but take your pick from about a bazillion gamer geeks, for the guys... gl) and go from there.
A relationship is give-give. Each of you gives the other what they need in exchange for your needs being fulfilled.
The problem comes when a spouse/significant other has an issue with an interest of yours that you feel passionately about. That issue will eventually become loathing, and at some point they will give an ultimatum, 'either that game goes, or I do'. A spouse/significant other should care about what you care about, or care enough about you to let you do what you like without shaming you/putting you down/guilting you.
If you are in a relationship like this... get the **** out before it becomes more dysfunctional.
I personally don't have a gf because I enjoy the things I do and am rather picky when it comes to the opposite sex, which makes my relationships few and far between but allows me piece of mind and happiness.
PS I was once married to one of these over-protective, selfish, low-self-esteem-havin turds. That was more than 3 years wasted. |

Just tell her to keep her transversal high when tackling and she'll be fine.
You, however, will probably be toast.
Being unemployed, it's been a nice perk for me to be able to give a faction ship for significant days, when he'd have been lucky to get a spring roll in RL money.

sounds like he pretty much dictates to you what you can do and cannot do - this is not good for relationship if you have your own hobby and you'd like to spend a few hours at it over the weekend he should respect that and let you play

but there's a whole bunch of other guys out there who share in this characteristic and who won't be so controlling and stupidly jealous over a computer game ;)

Edited by: Madra d''Arc on 15/05/2008 02:32:16 TBH I think a lot more girls would be into 'these games' if their parents were as giving with these kinds of toys in their youth. Parents usually assume we girls don't like these toys, so we grow up accustomed to different ways of playing games. IE: Here, make a game out of these Barbies - "but mum I asked for a gameboy.." It's really quite obvious if you think about it. So instead of complaining that girls don't get it, buy your daughter a goddamn interesting toy for once. :P
Me? My man used to complain when I was on vent for WoW and Fury, but I just found Eve, and he's an old Tradewars fan. My problem essentially solved.

Ask her to make an occasional skill change for you while your at work, then open a second account and set up a nice carebear/mining /industrialist character and get her to do skill changes on that character, when she make the observation "This would be the sort of character Id probably play" you smile and say here you go honey Now she plays more than me Although it was very funny the day she changed a skill for me and accidentally undocked my ship, she had to ask my corpmates how to redock. I dont have any problem with any of the male friends she has online, and if the convo gets too raunchy I log on and entertainingly embarass the hell out of her and anyone else in earshot.

Best plan ever for getting your significant other to let you play eve:
Get them used to you playing WoW and raiding 6+ hours a night 6 days a week. Then give it up cuz illidan is on farm status, and start playing eve for only 3 or 4 hours. They will hardily approve of the 'extra' time you get to spend with them and the fact that you can put the game down a lot more often and not be stuck to your screen yelling "I can't, babe! If i leave the whole raid will wipe!"

Before I started playing EVE, I tried introducing my girlfriend to Lineage 2, and all she wanted to do was pvp and kill people. Knowing my luck she would log into my main character and start going postal on every ship she sees!

Being recently divorced and having an ex that played a lot MMO's as well I can say that in my situation the games became an 'Easy" escape from the needed things that would have made our lives better, fuller, richer. Personally I've sworn off anymore heavy gaming (3+ hrs) forever, screw it. On my tomb stone the little dash between the dates isn't going to stand for "Really good gamer".
Its all fun in moderation, but EVE like many MMO's drains away the time that your never getting back. But hey mabe you'd be wasting it in even more stupid ways. So to each there own?
Anyway, if I made you feel guilty I'm sure you have a roam or mining op ready to make you feel better.

Originally by: Able Maldonado Edited by: Able Maldonado on 06/05/2008 16:26:09 As a lot of payers do, I spend a lot of my free time playing EVE.
I could just play to my hearts content, brushing off any distractions as feeble minded blather or I could attempt to explain the game and it's complexity in a short summary.
tl;dr - How would/have you introduced EVE to a significant other?
Simple. I dont have to.

We've lived together since winter, no probs at all. The gf is an avid blogger herself so she get's me and my time on the intarwebs.
My last score was actually to have her buy a second tv for our home, a 19" flatscreen (for the soapy stuff) so I could get back my 32" screen (smack in the middle of our livingroom) for playing:) Oh she got a recording digital receiver too while at it.
But, I've explained it to her, she really listened and tried to understand. Also I think she finds it cool (in a very hidden way) that I meet people from around the world, many are familymen (she deffo wants kids, I keep her on what she calls "trial-time" lol).
Key is, imo, don't be a fool. Don't come home with lipstick on your collar. Don't drink by yourself. Manage the house and be a man to take decisions, regarding stuff like economy and such. Also, see to it that you do your part of a nice home.
