The saving of the log should be pretty simple. Have to determine some sort of format for it. Preferably one that is relatively easy to read/modify. The hard part to code would be the playback client. Though it shouldn't be THAT hard, as I'm pretty sure they have similar in house already used for testing and making their trailers and such.

Great idea.
I really hope CCP implement this. It would be fantastic.
You could always do this in Team Fortress games, and it's available in Team Fortress 2 (they call it "recording a demo"). It records all the events, and uses the game engine to play it back. Because it uses game data and the game engine to record and playback, there is no loss of quality in the recording process and the file size for the recording is much smaller.
Other games provide this facility. It would be great if Eve did too.

Eh, in what decade were you born? Recording features were common in FPS engines since at least the late 90's, probably even earlier*.
Apart from that: Signed.
*After some quick google and wikipedia research, demo recording already featured in Doom and I can't be arsed to go look for even older engines. ----------
You get a wonderful view from the point of no return. |

Originally by: William Alex The educational aspect alone would be game changing you could look back at all your fights and say.. "ahh, HERE is where we messed up "that's what we can do better.
The real militaries do this for exactly this reason, when they can. It's a great idea. ___ "If you can't debate using logic & fact, and at least recognise other people's point of view, don't waste time posting on forums. It only makes you look like a teenage idiot." |

Is this maybe possible by using the Logserver? In theory the client has all the data about ships' positions, velocity and such, but does the Logserver allow access to that data?

Hmmm, I was actually talking about this in irc a while back, trying to generate some interest.
How I see it is like this : you guys are pushing for a demo recording, like FPS games have. There are many issues with that and basically it boils down to inaccurate representation of fights etc, I would rather have something that records a fight exactly how the pilot had it happening (that excludes camera angles etc)
I propose rather looking in the direction of packet recording - all of the old freeshard UO players most likely know about the packet recording that Razor offered - allowing you to save hours of gameplay in a few mb - as it was just saving slightly modified packets and replaying them to the client when you wanted. The big benefit I see from this is that if timestamped packets are kept, you are able to see fleet battles in all their laggy joy. Now you might think that sounds a bit lame because you wouldnt want to replay stuff with lag, but it will only help to actually diagnose problems if you could then use footage from a terribly laggy fight to check what was happening on the servers or diagnose what the problems are. Issues of packet security and such would have to be looked at, perhaps encrypting the container at some level - or just accepting that it doesnt actually matter :)
Packet stream recording - Accurate and low processing required. My vote.

This would be pretty easy to add; basically a chatlog file, with all the visible ship motions and commands being logged there. Then the file is played back through a player [Probably right in the EVE client would be the easiest, then a separate 'EVE Viewer' sort of player could be made] which interprets those motions and creates a 3D re-creation of the log.
Signed. This sounds cool. :)

I want this, not a priority, but it would be damn cool. שששששששששששששששSigשששששששששששששש The magic behind Minmatar ships is the fact that there is only one type of Minmatar ship. The only variation is when they decide to stop building it. |
