Seriously, It makes buying games very simple with no hustle. It helps indy developers like introversion get their name out there (uplink and defcon own). And it has such ludicrously good deals every weekend or so. This weekend's deal, Shadowgrounds Survivor was a great buy at $5.
It's community options are terrific, grouping and getting friends is easier than ever. Joining friends in their game servers is so very easy.
It has such an extensive library too, even the more obscure things like the new sam&max games.
So anyway what do you people think about steam?

I never have any problems with Vista, yet Steam continues to hate me with an extreme passion (it just doesn't seem to like the GFX drivers I use that happen to be the best for FS2)

I dunno about you guys, but since steam came out, I never really get any problems from steam. Besides, other thing good about steam is not worrying about CDs or serial keys :) -----------------------------------

Basically the picture surfin linked desribed most of it, though there was that great "Cannot launch steam because your not connected to the internet and we won't let you use offline mode har-har" thing.

Steam is fail. Nowhere near as fail as it used to be, but still fail. The only thing it has I find useful are friendlists, and TBH, these are long overdue on the computer to begin with. Nothing steam does I can't do on my own just as fast, but without the annoyance of launching steam to begin with.

Steam is ok most of the time but I imagine all you people saying it's fantastic have always-on Internet connections yes? Try steam with dial-up, not because the downloads are so slow..nope, a dial-up user is used to that. No, it's because most of the time IT WON'T LET YOU PLAY ANY OF THE GAMES EVEN IF THEY ARE FULLY UP TO DATE.
Since I've had broadband it's not been bad for me but goddamn I remember it being a steaming pile of cack.

Love Steam, good way to tag people that sign out of MSN, but not Steam.
Suckas.
That and the sort of "all in one" deal with it. I love it when a game i want comes out on Steam. I can get it there and then. Plus Steam introduced me to Trackmania...
Possibly the best game to play during downtime, the time flies.

Steam used to be absolutely crap and horrible and other negative things when it first came out.
However, since then it has evolved into something very good, imo. I used to hate it with a passion, but lately it's quite user friendly and the option to buy games with paypal is awesome. ----------------------

I second your thoughts. Until I discovered Steam, I was an eyepatch wearing grog swilling unrepentant pirate, who firmly believed that paying for games was morally wrong. Steam ended that - it's so fast and easy, I don't even mind paying for games, knowing I can even re-download them to another PC with just my steam account. I've also recently started using Direct2Drive, which is similar to Steam, to fill the gaps in Steam's game library.

It's great until you end up in some cheap hotel with your laptop staring at about 20 game icons realizing that you can't play a single one due to no internet connection.

Steam is great. Only had one problem which was a game not uppdating itself. I read the FAQ and it solved the problem right away. Used it since HL2 with great sucess!

Steam rocks.
Although the prices could be a bit lower - Since there's no boxing or distribution anymore, the developers get all the money straight away, so why still charge the same amount of money as if you'd buy it in the shop? I understand that they need cash to keep the servers running, but i'm sur eit's not that much.
Still, it kills 2 birds with one stone. Games are slightly harder to distribute illegally (provided they're only available on Steam), and with all the money going to the developer rather than just 10-20% (usual royalties when distributed in stores i think) they can carry the costs of the portion that does get copied.

I like the bit were you forget its there and suddenly it decides to eat bandwidth while you're on other games. System hog.
/start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

Back in the day, :P, when Steam was first released, it really did suck. The friends system when it was released was crap. That being said, Valve finally got it right. I've never been more impressed with an online distribution system. TBH I flat out refuse to use anything else (especially EALink).
Like the OP said, the indy game community growing up around Steam is awesome. It's the best place to find original games.
