I'm putting up this thread so that people can discuss the next chronicle when we publish it this coming Monday, May 19. I'll be in London then, but I trust in CCP machinery to get the thing out on time. It's a weird'un, but I'll give you a hint: The protagonist (such as he is) is a Caldarian. Here's a sneak peek:
"The body begins to change. Since the chemicals are initially pumped away from the heart, the first parts affected are the limbs and the less complex internal organs; and, of course, the blood. Regular blood cells begin to die off, their walls eaten up by the intrusive substance while new, more robust ones are pumped out of bone marrow by the millions. These new cells, whose oxygen-carrying capability far exceeds that of the old and dying ones, grow to maturity in a matter of instants. The lungs then kick in, their alveoli adapting to letting in more oxygen than this body has ever been able to assimilate. The muscles swiftly respond, followed by various other organs, gorging themselves on this new red breath."

it seems abraxas has trained 'ccp - anticipation torture' to lvl 5... that's an all to common skill lately (waiting for dev blogs on FW)...
interesting story though I wonder who that person was. Was he a test subject for bio upgrades? or was he some super soldier? also since i'm paying 4 mil+ isk for my clone I hope a few of the things he had comes standard.

Seems to me like its human/genetic? experimentation to create a host that could handle this process without popping, it talks of strengthening the body under a very rigorous and potentially dangerous method. the last part seems to me like an attempted escape, and getting gunned down.

It sounds like a genetically / biologically engineered soldier. I assume this because of the line about "... and react through hand movements, either a wave or a slight pull of a finger".
Sounds like the thing can advance, duck, analyze then aim (wave) and shoot (pull the trigger) then rinse and repeat.
My first thought (before reading that the "protagonist" is a Caladri) was that this could be a Jovian Grunt or something... but maybe this is the Caldari's first attempt at creating a tech 2 Tube Child with increased armor resists?

The line about alcohol ingestion sounds like it's not simply a will-less "drone" soldier.
Bio-engineered yes, but not mindlessly robotic.
We see the process, stimuli and responses from the inside of the body as a machine at the cellular level, but we do not see this from the view person's consciousness.

Clinical Poetry? Very nice medical authenticity. I hope the following is not too much analysis for a piece of literature that has an obvious intentionally indirect style.
There is an interesting progression between the 'acts': 1. Transformation from normal via chemical injection. 2. Training the body with rigors. 3. The body failing under deadly force.
What I can infer: The body is in custody, potentially by the same owner in acts 1 and 2, since both the chemical injections and rigors appear to be external forms of training.
In act 2, the body is also clearly in someone's care/custody, deduced from the assumption that the injection of sedative, application of unknown medical agent at the back muscle, and the electrical field applied to the torso could not be accomplished by the body itself while enduring the 'spasm'.
It seems as if something important is taking place between acts 2 and 3. I take the 'lift', 'drop', and 'different air smell' at the end of act 2 to mean the body is being released to a new environment. My question here is: "Who is doing the releasing? And why?"
Act 3 has some potentially interesting plot lines. The focus has shifted and now instead of training stimuli, the body is reacting to its environment, and apparently its brain's choices. My highly speculative guesses:
Trouble sleeping: the subject is on the run and has trouble sleeping since it is brought to full attention at the slightest suspicion.
Trouble with self preservation and/or social integration in the new environment: I believe the reference to the prefrontal cortex is a significant one. In my search of the topic I discovered this: Many diseases, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and ADHD, have been related to dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex. and This brain region has been implicated in planning complex cognitive behaviors, personality expression, and moderating correct social behavior. The basic activity of this brain region is considered to be orchestration of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals.
It seems that the change in diet could either be the brain learning to modify what is ingested to improve performance, or the body getting aid from a more knowledgeable source (envision a kind older woman feeding soup).

IMHO the last part sounds like being caught in an explosion. So here is how I interpret the situation
Together with the loud whine before death I can only assume that this is the case of a bioengineered soldier. The first two chapters are about his/her creation. Then he/she is deployed in some sort of desert/vacuum environment (greater fluctuations in temperature). His unit is under attack from artillery, he's rapidly sprinting from cover to cover, his rifle in his hand, being knocked down by nearby explosions, but he's protected by his suit from the deadly shrapnel so even when he's almost caught in blasts he still survives, despite the force being so powerful that he's knocked down. Then finally there is the loud whine of an incoming shell (could be some sort of energy blast as well) and a direct hit. An explosive force that not even his augmented muscle, bone and armor can handle and he's ripped apart. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. I support most of what you are saying except for the part about the suit, it clearly states that his skin touches a trigger
"the skin on the fingers cooling from steely contact."
Also to support your theory of military deployment we have the lines,
"The eardrums keep taking in and filtering everything they can, while both visual cortex and motor control narrow their focus, accomplishing in linear order several tasks that are so practiced they have long since been ingrained in the subconscious."
My interpretation of this is that the soldier in question does not have proper head gear to protect against concussions from explosions, this also shows that its in an atmospheric battle, and the several tasks that are so practiced hints towards military training which is practiced time and time again until perfected, this also suggests Caldari.
All in all this is an extremely deep read and I appreciate CCP's newfound attention to detail.

Well, it could be that the gloves covering the fingers are thin enough to cool down from contact with the metal of his gun. Or he isn't wearing a full body suit, which means that he's fighting in an atmosphere that at least isn't toxic (in other words, some sort of desert. Maybe a traditional desert, maybe just an environment that is poor at absorbing heat, and thus leading to sharp shifts in day and night temperature). In any case it's not surprising. If you've ever worn hardtip gloves you'll know how incredibly clumsy you feel when you can't sense everything through your fingertips, so even if he wears gloves they're likely to be as thin as possible.
As for his headgear and concussions from explosions. After thinking about it I agree that it is taking place in some place that has an atmosphere. But when it comes to headgear... Concussive force is perhaps the most difficult to protect yourself from. In an explosion, no matter what you do you're going to take all of the force because it simply is brute force. No niceties like a gun or sword does, by increasing the force by dealing it in a smaller area. Concussive force from an explosion hits your entire body at the same time. Bodyarmor can do nothing but spread out the impact (which is futile if your entire body is hit by the concussive force), and lengthen it over a very short period of time. Reducing a millisecond of trauma so that it instead impacts under force/x for Time*x. Ie, reducing impulse but maintaining the force. The suits ability to do this is limited by the deformation zone. The larger the deformation zone, the more the suit can reduce impulse. Since a bodyarmor needs to be agile there isn't much of a deformation zone.
In fact, I think the soldier is wearing very advanced headgear. A normal human, or even a super-enhanced human would be blind and deaf after being thrown around by an explosion. Well, maybe not blind, but definitely deaf since the explosion would have ruptured his eardrums (no matter how super-enhanced those eardrums would be). What's making him dizzy is most likely the concussive force itself, throwing him around like a ragdoll. Transplanting vibrations through bone and muscle until the vibrations hits the brain, inner ear. Distorting hearing and balance. Just like when you're at a disco you can hear the bass even if your ears are covered by protective earmuffs. Works on the same principle as a skull microphone. Only in reverse. |

just had a very weird thought regarding this story
What if this 'super-soldier' is in fact a saboteur?
he's snuck aboard the nyx mothership that rammed that caldari station.
i think this fits the story just as well since he'd have to hide aboard the ship kill key personnel quickly survive a firefight to take the bridge/command deck and then gets ripped to shreds when the ship rams the station.
if this is accurate its also very disturbing
regardless another excellant story and as others in this thread and previous threads have stated we are fortunate to have sucj talented writers working for ccp keep up the good work!

My idea is that this story describes being a podpilot.
1) We know from Jovin Wetgrave that you need years of training and/or biological enhancement to handle being in a capsule, so the first part would be that process.
2) Also from wetgrave but in many other stories including the descriptions for boosters, it describes the pilot as 'feeling' the things that are happening to the ship, such as damage, NOSsing etc, hence the hot/cold/electric stimulation on the skin. So I think that the second part is describing the physical reaction a body has to the input of a capsule.
3) The last part could be the bio-reprocessing plant (good suggetion whoever made it) but I also thin that it could just as likely be the bodily experience of being hit by a railgun charge or something to that effect. More likely the fomer as there is no mention of the neurotoxin in the last section. The last part mot likely describes a rather violent death.
So far CCP has managed to avoid crap like OMGSUPASOLJER!!!!! but has mentioned that capsuleers are genetically and/or biologically modified several times.

At least tell us if were getting warmer I think that yes, this is a soldier for caldari. Maybe A "normal" person signs up and has bio-enjineered sessions if that makes sense..The final act is when he is deployed on the battlefornt. I find it interesting that no concious thought is ever included, probably for effect. But maybe he was a dead/brain-dead person (at the start remember something about, "but a few hormones left that are breaking down" etc..) possiblty under control of a nexus or something (Quake anyone? lol). The reasoning is because we read about only autonomous reactions to stimuli. like isntead of saying "he scramed out in pain" it was described as: the abdominal muscles forced air out drying vocal cords etc..

First of all, nice story! The process makes one guess what it's depicting, and it definitly makes one think about it beyond just reading the story, and that's that.
I think you might have made a typo though:
For a while there is utter stillness. Then a spot on the back, on the skin over the torn muscle, gets covered with something that begins to intrudes.
Can we please have the spoiler now? As stated, it's been quite some time.

Act 1: Some sedated, possibly unwilling victim, is subjected to a chemical alteration that makes him / her superhuman.
Act 2: The effects of the drug / change are tested, but it's unclear whether the test is to see if the new body passes, or if it's because this is the first instance where the victim has survived the chemical and it's time to see what it did.
Act 3: Describes (to me) the exact events that happen, down to the sound being played by the client, when we delete a character.
So, perhaps, the story is a depiction of what happens when a bored/clueless newbie creates a character, changing the the attributes up and down, etc., then the game does the final check to see if everything is good and if the name chosen is available/valid, and then the newbie decides he doesn't want the character after all and deletes him before even logging in.

Personally I think it's almost certainly involved with FW in some way, so I think that counts out a character being created and deleted, though that was an interesting interpretation to think about :)
Also, to be a podpilot mostly seems to involve neural interactions, with the body the of the operator just needing to stand up to whatever forces it is subjected to inside the pod... and while some of the modifications involved certainly would make the body more resilient to possible extreme forces, it seems a bit extreme for a podpilot clone... so I think it probably is a soldier, presumably in the Caldari forces since we're told he's Caldarian, though that might not be true obviously.
It sounds to me like combat on a planet surface, or maybe a station, so I personally don't think it will turn out to be from a battle on board the Nyx, though if it was it could just as easily be the crew fighting each other between those loyal to their suicidal maniac captain and those trying to stop him as it could be a saboteur on board as part of a grand conspiracy, though I'm not sure why someone in the crew would have had such modifications done.
And please do post a spoiler on it, at least a partial one... or at the very least hints, there's a limit to what we have to go on here :P

I believe the protagonist is indeed a Caldari Special Forces biologically enhanced soldier.
My main supporting text from the Chronicle is this:
"Now the visual cortex takes over, the head craning back and forth while the legs piston and the lungs work, and every now and then the body will stop, crouch, process visuals and react through hand movements, either a wave or a slight pull of a finger."
Please note that the text states "process visuals and react through hands movements, either a wave or a slight pull of a finger". This implies that the protagonist is giving out hand signals to others, perhaps squad members. A tactic that suggests Special Forces, not that of a simple Grunt.
In general I took the Chronicle as this..
Act I - Creation of a Biologically enhanced indivual.
Act II - Individual is put under deress in a stable environment to test his durability.
Act III - Protagonist is placed in a atmospheric combat situation and is K.I.A. Most likely from some sort of projectile, a gun perhaps. Then before dieing is terminated by either an explosion or some sort of extreme pressure.
Just my thoughts.

Yet another EVE chronicle that builds up, builds up, and NEVER reveals what the hell is going on... these annoying mystery stories are starting to bother me. I love the descriptive writing and mysterious subject, but please, how about some revelation at the end of these things. My interpretation was along the lines of a super soldier as well. I dont think this soldier was any specific race or in a specific battle, but just describing the way genetically and chemically enhanced soldiers are created, tested, and killed in the world of EVE. Yes it was cool, but come on. Give some reference, write a story line. I read these whole things expecting a little bit of plot and get to the end with just more questions than when I started the first paragraph. |

i have two theories while i do agree with the war type thing i also belive that this could be a method of torture by some corporation to a agent by spilling the making of some new powerful booster to the authorties first by showing him what the chemical does and what he missed then giving him death as punishment for spilling the info. my second therory is that this is simply something that the jovians are doing in a attempt to remove agression while giving them a better fighting spirit.
