If you enjoyed Transport Tycoon you will like Railroad Tycoon 3 (Reviews). The thing about this game is you don't actually have to build a railroad empire. You can build/purchase industries and play around with the stock market. The economy is simulated (recessions & booms), so you can see the effect on the economy and your bottom line. You have to be pretty shrewd during the recession periods otherwise the company of directors will sack you (you have to keep the shareholders sweet), but if you buy enough shares you can effectively control your company. Or you can just play with the trains, it's up to you what level of depth you play at.
The stock market is pretty good for a game. You can buy stock on margin, make hostile takeovers, crash the share price, see a detailed breakdown on how the company is performing. You can effectively play this game as Industry Tycoon.
I very much enjoyed the music in this game, which is not really something i listen to. I always let the intro run for some reason.
Did you like Homeworld? Enjoy Eve? Of course you do. You would probably like Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (gameplay video). A tactical fleet simulator which is pretty close to Eve in terms of combat. Mission driven storyline, control multiple ships, target subsystems, and enjoy using those nuclear missles at the end of the game (they seriously light up your screen and not much comes through an alpha strike ).
It's a shame Nexus 2 never made it...

Originally by: Doctor Dre There was an old game I played which I could have sworn went by the name 'Syndicate' but every search I have done came up with a completely different game.
This game had research, a stock market, a mail system with missions, and a RTS all rolled up into one. You could research mechs, weapons, tanks, troops, and all sorts of junk then choose your battles. Then you could customize your units how you saw fit and send them into battle. this was possibly 92-96, anyone have any ideas?
Are you sure that's not one of the Mechwarrior games (early ones)

I just bought Prey over Steam and finished it in about 11 hours ... Amazing stuff, worth getting if you're into fps adventures and can afford the ~$25 or so for a couple of hours of fun. Replayability is probably not there, but hey, it's better than watching 10 good movies. ;-)
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

Go for medieval 2: total war. That game is a bit of a combination between turned based and real time strategy. managing your empire is a bit like civ, while combat is more like Heroes although this is in full 3d, realtime and alot more fun. It's always a rush when you see your +1000 man army charge in on the enemy. or when your egyptian archers are perched on a hill and are sending volley after volley of arrows down on heavy armoured christian knights, man i love that game and i hate myself for throwing the cd away. i can't really explain the game so here's a link to a vid(hope it gives you some idea about battle in medieval2).

Seconded!
MOO III was like - ok, i've booted the spreadsheet and the computer seems to be having a good time. When do i get to play?

MOO III wasn't that bad once you got in to it. Nothing close to MOO II, but still plenty playable. In fact, its all the worse if you go in there expecting MOO II; the gameplay is angled completely differently.
Its a slow starter, but once you learn to tune your mind in to the "grand strategy" (and tune your mind out from those bloody spreadsheets), it's quite pleasant watching your trillion-person empire expand and dominate.
The real shame with it is that it was half finished; half of the features that were promised (some of which would have made the spreadsheet game a hundred times easier and more interesting) just never made it in to the release, and were never patched in. ------

I have hazy memories of Cyberjudas (reviews), it was a game i played about 10 years ago. It is a complex game to master, and it takes ages to get through.
You are the US president and control Military-Economic-Intelligence assets and it's up to you what you do with the world. You have to maintain popularity at home and maintain peace abroad, all the while watching your own back to avoid being stabbed in the back. I recall the game claimed it based it's statistical data for countries on CIA data; probably well out of date by now though.
I remember converting parts Africa to free Democratic/Capitalist states, launching surgical strikes in Libya and unintentionally kicking off a thermonuclear exchange in Central Europe. It can take many turns to see the consequences of your actions and is very much a game of patience and diplomacy.
It wasn't really a popular mainstream game though. Wiki summary.

Edited by: nihlanth on 19/05/2008 21:36:27 Edited by: nihlanth on 19/05/2008 21:27:14 You should definately play X3 - Reunion 2.0. It is an open-ended space combat sim like EVE, except it is only single player and the combat is first-person twitch based joystick style(although challenging and fun).
You dont have to do the story or any missions and just build an empire in the X3 universe (though not as large as the New Eden galaxy).
The mechanics are nearly as complex as EvE, so you will feel that overwhelming learning curve that eve online has. (be prepared to spend many hours reading all the different manuals that are available on the forums, and the manual on the disk.)
The great thing about X3 is that you dont need to create alts and pay $14/month for an account.
As you build you advance through the game, you can build an empire by automating your trading ships and combat ships to fight along side you. You can also build your own complexs and factories.
There are 5-6 factions much like the factions in eve that have their own little unique philospohies on ship design.

Edited by: Patch86 on 19/05/2008 22:10:17 Oh, while we're on the old sci-fi 4x games, you might want to give Emperor of the Fading Suns a go.
Big, grand-scale turn based strategy game, where you control one "house" of an interstellar feudal civilization, and you've got to fight, trade, scheme and schmooze your way to the top (in theory, eventually getting crowned Emperor for a win). The plot was a complete Dune rip-off, and the learning curve made EVE look like tiddlywinks, but it's up there with the greats in terms of sheer imaginative scope.
