Edited by: Ilvan on 09/06/2008 16:43:59 I like to (ab)use weapon traps. Helps even the odds a bit.
A 10x3 hall-o-death will stop all but the largest goblin raids, I've found. The leftovers are easy pickings for the marksdwarves.
edit: If you're going to use them, I'd suggest the special trap weapons - they take the same amount of metal (one bar per weapon) but are much more effective.

Started a new fortress, but am limiting the number of dwarfs to 10. I like the starting stage when your setting up, and having a rush of 25 immigrants because of my engravings is annoying.
3 of the 10 will be crossbow dwarfs who will be building the towers outside my main area. 2 will be miners, with engraving and mason. 2 dedicated growers, with picks to mine any area's I dont want tonnes of stone in. 1 person doing all my noble type stuff, maybe pick up some crafting skills. And the final 2 will be doing any off jobs about the place. Come year 3 I will open up for 10 more people, with every year after that getting anouther 10. Hopefully I should be able to cope that way. Also going to build a nice tomb for my future "Kickass Engraver of Kickassery". Maybe look for some nice coloured stone to build it in. (- Dev Protective Shield. My sig is invincible! -) |

I've noticed that some sieges contain a lot of enemy ranged users, whilst others have hardly any. If there are a number of goblin archers I tend to just let them run merrily onto my Trap Corridor of Death, and clean up with a cage full of wardogs afterwards.
However when they turn up with no ranged support, thats when I get to play with my close combat units.
But like the wiki says, even a small corridor of traps will kill off the majority of siege's, and then leave you with an epic amount of iron items to smelt down.
One thing I've been trying out with my military is to draft the "required" number of dwarves into the Fortress Guard and let them bash each other about with weapons (in full amour) for a bit. Once they are nicely trained up, I'll transfer them to the military and keep them to one side for repelling invaders and thieves. Assuming they survive the training that is.

I feel kinda bad about abusing the AI now
I built a retratcting bridge over the river as the entrance to my fortess. everything is neatly surrounded by walls. so intruders HAVE to take the bridge. needless to say, there are several pressure plates right in front and behind that bridge, linked to it.
I just watched a goblin siege slowly approaching the bridge. They spotted some fat watch animal i chained there, and they went into full charge. First few did a wile e. coyote above the water, and shortly thereafter got washed away by the river.
the remaining goblins stood there, (on the pressure plates) totally confused about their now lost path to my juicy dwarves. so they backed up, releasing the pressure plates, lowering the bridge, refreshing the path.
i watched this about three times, before the last few fled... but yeah, its efficient. the backup weapon traps never went to use. |

well, to be honest, using the military to fend off sieges is, like everything else in this game, YOUR decision. there are other ways that work too.
currently im leaning towards an atomsmasher setup, not because i want to "cheat" my way into easy dwarven living, but because of the myriads of haul jobs each siege generates.
as the game progresses, i get seriously crappy speed, despite of a fairly decent computer. i SWEAR its all the items lying around. anyways, heres my plan:
P-----------P----------- P-----------P----------- P-----------P-----------
P = pressure plate, triggered by non citizen creatures of all size (DIE, you friggin racoons!) - = Bridge, retractable. both bridges are linked to EVERY pressure plate here.
below the - tiles goes a pit, as many z levels deep as you fancy, with an optional entrance to your fortress, probably WALLED off, not doored. on the bottom of the pit go 6 DRAWbridges, that raise toward one of the longer sides of the pit. the bridges are each 1 tile wide and span the whole floor. it needs 6 not three because the pit is probably longer than 1 maximum bridge length. then you link a lever to all of those bridges, and when something falls down, you just pull the lever on autorepeat for some time, til everything is grinded down to oblivion. as far as i understand it, this removes the goblins and items from the game, at least it seems that way. yesterday i already had a trash disposal system like that in place, maybe ill upload the fortress later, since it has my first (more or less) working mist system.
ofc you could just build that grinder on the entrance level, but that would need you monitoring it once in a while, or have watch dogs so you dont get rushed by an ambush.
the bridges above add the much needed automatization
heres a screenie of my entrance level with only one pit in place: The dwarf on the bridge is showing you where NOT to stand.
the weapon traps on the left are failsafes, left of them you can see a LOS blocking "maze" and the open space can house a trade depot. upon getting sieged, order your dwarves to stay inside, wait, and then go on your marry way.
it is still useful to have a military tho, since you occasionally get attacked while you add some pump system or whatnot that has temporary maintenance shafts to the surface. its kinda cool to order a squad to a construction site, to guard it...

alrighty then, time to start the daily building... finish the one im building now or build a better one... hmmm.... i think ill finish this one...
first i'll add a closed water circuit to the mist generator, so , for one, ill have a truly working waterfall system. then ill drag the aqueduct over to the edge off the map, to really get rid of my excess water.
then i finally upload that fortress so you can see what i did thar, any bets if i manage to kill everybody before that ? |

So I appear at this site. It was supposed to be Calm. I look down one level onto the plainlands and what do I see? A Kobold Burrow! And they all have names! So I sent my 2 Miners (It was meant to be 3, but I forgot my Engravers pick) into a cliffside to begin operation build a kickass entry tunnel, and what do I see? A Chasm Finnaly, I good site!

Nice.
My old fortress was finally taken out by a Goblin Siege. So I've decided to start a new one...in the high mountains in the middle of Goblin territory.

Edited by: Lal QelThyr on 16/06/2008 18:10:42 Got 3 different forts going at the moment. One is the Kobold Attack Fort I mentioned (Which is going great. I finally have a fort where going outside results in death. And some spectacular results as my Full Stat Engraver (Who I call Boo) rips them limb from limb. Go for the eyes Boo!), the other my random water/magma test site, and my new and improved "lets see what happens when I dump a magma tube into the see" fort.
P.S, I have also gotten into the habit of bringing 7 picks with me. I dont use the points for anything decent, and having my initial 7 doing something at all times is nice. (- Dev Protective Shield. My sig is invincible! -) |

My fort (Talkmirror) has been progressing nicely, 8 years in, 160 dwarves, no sieges yet, no real issues other than we've de-forested the entire area and I'm struggling to find any decent ore. Bit boring so far! Any kobold thieves are taken down rapid-style by the 3 elite marksman i have patrolling the area - funny to watch.

If you want a challange, might I suggest a Haunted Glacier. Preferably completly flat. The roving bands of Ice Wolves are annoying as hell to begin with, and water production can be a *****.
Started a new Fort (No. 4 ) by the Seaside, I wanted Haunted so I might get some Zombie Whales, but no luck. So right now I have A) Dug into a chasm by mistake. There goes my basic structure. B) Used 3DDwarf to find my underground lava pool Its on the wrong side of the map, so I am currently building a bigass tunnel, maybe airlock it and have dedicated haulers for my ore production buisness. C) Found an Artifact Sword on a random passing Kobold (- Dev Protective Shield. My sig is invincible! -) |

Edited by: P''uck on 17/06/2008 20:29:57 oh my, i just lost a fortress that was pure beauty. i wanted upload it so you can check out my ultra advanced mist generator, that irrigated the farms and kept the wells full, too ...
but when that goblin siege showed up, almost at the same time as that dragon, the tantrum spiral started... and you know why?
because i had an accidential cave in at the BEGINNING of the game. i had to reconstruct the floor. now theres a small little problem stemming from that... dwarves wont go underneath those tiles when "dwarves stay inside".
my booze stash was underneath those tiles... and i only noticed on that last (and long) siege, that my dwarves couldnt drink. (dont ask me why they wouldnt wanna touch that well 5 stories deeper).
so in a pinch i let em go outside, so they could drink- well... about 5 of them really went outside and got shot, which started the tantrum spiral, because they were thirsty already.
losing a friend is alright if you have a legendary dining room but not without booze.
and i tell ye somehting: loosing WASNT fun this time. i think it took me three days to get that beatiful thing going. i was in the eight year or so :( i already had the economy going, and a downed titan on my bill. dual pumpstack for the mistmachine, personal quarters for each and every dwarf, the whole thing smoothed and ready to be engraved already. my guys were stll living in the mud layers as i was about to finish that huuuuge area carved from stone.
i could cry
but this time... THIS time... oh yeah, no more mistakes :P

Don't feel too bad, I lost my entire military to a single ambush because they were all strung out on a really long patrol route I had set up and got picked off one by one.
My new fortress, however, will have an improved water generation system compared to the old one and should theoretically be more secure. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

i like the sound of this.
for me, this game is really getting out of hand. i mean, i spend days upon days with sheets of paper and a pencil, scribbling away in my room, like a madman, to get the plans for a fortress set up, then i spend just as many days in building it.
and i mean literally DAYS. its almost feeling like im accomplishing something, and its not mastering the UI anymore (apart from building structures above the interface is actually faster than any mouse interface the game could ahve ).
its weird enough that my girl, for once, is showing some interest in my gaming life and asks me regularily how many dwarves i drowned recently and if some mist in the dining room is REALLY worth that many lives.
Ususally i lie to her and say the same water circuit is used to irrigate the fields and keeping the wells full, and that even more dwarves would die without it. but i think shes gettting suspicious...
must... secure... plans....

My wife refers to the game as "Dork Fortress," and yet she expresses visible and sincere sadness when my fortress goes south or when something bad happens. Edited by: Drakesh on 22/06/2008 09:28:27 My spare (work) fortress BORNGLOVE has just had a prisoner breakout of epic proportions.
Usually I keep my captives caged up and release them one at a time to a waiting team of new recruits and veterans. This time it went wrong...
One of my captives has just got past 3 of my heavily armed trainees and made a break for freedom. In the interest of fairness I'll leave the door unlocked to see if he can get out.
So then I took a look at the goblin -
Dostngosp Subtledoomed the Future Gill of Jails, Goblin Hammer Lord. Oh crap.
He's raced past recruit Helpkey (taking off a hand), Hammerdwarf Boatsbristle (removing Boatbristle's head in the process) and is being pursued by Mirroredletter (who has hurt his neck).
It appears Mirroredletter is an ex-mayor, and has no weapons. Oops.
Helpkey eventually bled to death. Despite having a mangled head, Boatsbristle is now up and pursuing.
Subtledoomed the HammerLord has run past my traps with few injuries - lightly wounding both arms, left leg, one elbow. The traps included 4 giant steel axe blades, 2 menacing steel spikes and 1 enormous steel corkscrew.
The goblin hammerlord then approached my secondary trap, and neatly sidestepped it diagonally. (dammit)
MirroredLetter caught up with him, so the hammerlord smashed his leg to pieces and left him bleeding to death in the corridor, blood splattered up the walls. A horse ran towards him (!) - which Subtledoomed smashed so hard it flew down the end of the corridor and died in a heap.
A speartrap moderately wounded Subtledoomed's elbow. Ignoring the pain, he has gone charging down the main workshop corridor, dwarves scattered away from him dropping what they are carrying (other than a poor brewer who had his hand smashed to pieces and then bled to death), whilst I'm trying to get my elite marksmen into place.
Elitemarksmen Arrowplains arrives on scene, and begins opening fire. Manages to hit the hammerlord twice doing bugger all damage before the goblin gets in close range. They wrestle for a bit, then the goblin runs for it, getting shot twice in the back for his troubles.
He's now running through corridors full of fleeing dwarves, smashing a weaver's leg to pulp. A brave guard (Portalblock - legendary speardwarf) engages him, and actually manages to wound his right hand.
Another elite marksman catches up, along with a recruit marksman, and they begin peppering Subtledoomed to death. He loses an ankle, a foot and other damage all over before dropping unconscious and being chopped apart.
Boatsbristle is somehow alive and moving around (with a mangled head) Mirrodletter is now in bed (missing a leg) Daggerroads the guard has a manged lung and wounded spine Two dogs are missing paws and legs as well.
Somehow a planter died in the chaos
Portalblock the Legendary speardwarf has come through with no injuries at all!

Pretty Awesome story. Not a bad idea ether. I should do that as well. Guess its always a good idea to check to see the experience level of a caged goblin before letting them go on untrained recruits though.
This game has consumed all my free time. Its so damned addictive. Theres also the nostalgia factor of the old ASCII graphic games I used to play years and years ago.
As to be expected my first few fortresses ended in disaster but I learned from my mistakes. As they say, losing in this game is fun.
My first fortress ended with me flooding my entire fort when I tapped into a lake. I thought it was just an underground lake. I was going to use it for fishing and as a water source. I didn't know about the z-axis thing thinking it was played on a 2D plain. When the lake started flooding into my fortress all my dwarves began fleeing for their lives. One unsuspecting dwarf was caught inside the kitchen when it happened. He tried to escape but got pushed back in by the water and ended up drowning. Another was caught in his bedroom and drowned in his sleep. I had a good laugh and abandoned to make a new fortress.
My second fortress was started in the middle of a forest. I didn't understand the map very well and just picked a random spot. Since I was still inexperienced in how this game worked I was going to abandon this map and start over again, but decided I'll try experimenting with farming, hunting, and other aspects of the game first. Without any stone around (still didn't know z-axis existed) I turned to the only other resource at hand. Wood. I created a small wooden fort, made a wooden crossbow and some wooden bolts, and assigned one of my dwarves to be a hunter. Assigned him the hunting dog I brought with and sent him on his way. The next thing I did was build a small farm. An entire season passed before I discovered that the plump helmet spawn I brought with was completely worthless to me (again, z-axis thing) as it only grew underground. I decided to forage for some seeds and then planted those instead. I also didn't know you needed to set what to grow for each season. By the time winter came my food stores where very low and I was completely out of booze. During the middle of winter my hunter ran into a pack of wolves and got completely destroyed. The wolves killed both him and his hunting dog. Once they finished ripping them both apart they waltzed right into my wooden dwarf fort and began using the rest of the dwarves as chew toys.
I decided I had better read up on a few things before starting over and headed on over to the wiki page for this game. I should have done that to begin with but thought I was going to be able to figure it out on my own. My new fortress is coming along nicely. I've already spotted several flaws in my design but its to late to fix them now. I'll improve on my next fortress.
One question I can't seem to find an answer on though. My mayor has made a demand of "item in Bedroom". I've put all kinds of furniture and random objects in his room and nothing is working. Is there any way to find out what it is he wants specifically? --- My cat Putter approves of this post. |

I've also had an issue with all the ponds and water sources other than this river all being dried up. Are they supposed to refill at some point or once a pond or lake goes empty does it stay empty?
hmm not sure about the bedroom thing then... should probably be chest/bed/armour stand/weapon rack. those ponds will fill up again if it rains, but the river is the only reliable permanent source of water really. (unless it ices up!). I had that trouble too, ran out of liqueur and they all died!
