You people need to check this game out now. Why?
1. It is, by far, the most complex and sandbox-style game ever, comparable to Spore in scope 2. You carve fortresses out of the ground and/or mountains 3. Highly Addictive 4. All Graphics are ASCII
Seriously, folks, this game rocks. Get it now!
Dwarf Fortress: Linkage Wiki: Linkage Graphic Packs (Replaces ASCII graphics with slightly more tolerable graphics): Linkage
Also, this is now the official Dwarf Fortress Thread.
Also, I Expect Xaen's head to explode upon seeing the UI. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Ahh, Toady one, how I love thee.
I've been a supporter of this for quite a while now, donating moneies towards it. One of my favorite games, easily.
Also, I would really recommend against using the Tiles, the ASCII is perfectly descriptive as it is, different letters, Cases, Colours and backgrounds means there is a HUGE combination of things whereas most tilesets repeat the use of certain tiles for more than one thing, leading to terrible confusion sometimes (Especially that tileset that changes controls! alters the layer-changing keys). They may be faster to get started with but in the end you'll want to use ASCII I feel.

amazing game, the gui is horrendous, the graphics as ASCII, but it is somehow immensely enjoyable.

ASCII graphics give me a headache.
Looks like a great game though. I'm downloading it now, will probably try it out later.

Currently, my fortress houses about 30 dwarves across four distinct levels. Features:
*"Hallway of Doom" that I can trigger to flood in case of a goblin siege *Individual rooms for up to 40 dwarves *Two large dining halls *Three centrally-located storage areas for holding wood, food, furniture, and gems *A large barracks near the entrance where my defense force of 2 axedwarves and 6 unarmed fighters train
Current Priorities: -Construct weapons of some kind (need to get a smelter going) -Train troops in the use of weapons -Produce more valuable goods in time for the arrival of next year's caravan -Shore up waning food supplies through farming, fishing, and hunting

Last night my growing fortress (around 85 dorfs) TalkMirror nearly flooded the land (and probably the world) with a badly planned screwpump powered by a waterwheel running off a local river.
I had planned to create my own waterfall using a deep shaft I had mined out. Unfortunately this overflowed, and I had NO WAY TO SWITCH IT OFF (I hadn't attached any levers). I had to build an emergency wall surrounding the fortress to halt as much water as possible from flooding down the stairs.
Eventually a brave "strike team" of mechanics succeeded in breaking up the screwpump and stopping the flow.
The end result was about 10 dead dwarves and a cat.
I am now the proud owner of a very soggy swampland

The graphics packs do help, but after a short while your eyes get used to it.
For the first few hours expect to hit 'k' a lot so you can view what every object is.
And once the goblins start invading, things get very messy...

How long do you have to wait for that to begin? I've had my fortress for at least 2 years now and no sign of goblins, only the occasional Kobold thief which promptly gets annihilated by my military. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

I think its roughly after you've got 100+ dwarves. You'll get a message saying "a vile force of darkness has arrived" then around 20+ gobbo's will appear on the edge of the map and make their way to your fortress for a party...

Bah! Bah I say. Im spending too much time trying to find a suitable home for my fortress than actually playing. I had one for a while, but I couldnt find any farm soil underground, and the river was right across the field. Just gotta pick somewhere and stick with it I guess. *continues his search* (- Dev Protective Shield. My sig is invincible! -) |

I had my first few hours of game tonight!
I love the open nature of it, and the sheer detail. It seems like anything you can imagine wanting to do is possible, some way or another.
Difficult, though. Can't figure out how to attract migrants to my fort, so (until the beardy ones rock the casbah) I'm stuck with a population of 7. And heaven forbid anything attacks or something- aside from some "tame stray dogs", I think I'm defenceless for the time being...
Still, learning curves will be learning curves. ------

Zone a meeting point at your fortress entrance above ground. Once I did that I got like 30 immigrants in one go lol.
Also train war dogs if possible. They are beasts at killing things. Literally.

Ok, finally picked a good spot (No Magma, but quite a bit of coal and wood). Currently building on the very top a a very high cliff. Planning on slowly building down to sea level, where there is a nice big Fresh Water Lake, which I am going to try and use to fertilise crops. Its a good game, adictive as hell aswell. I installed this earlier to check it out as it looked like fun.
W ... T ... F ...?
Boy is it the most complicated thing I've ever seen. I'm going to go off and do some Quantum Physics caculations for a bit of light relief and relaxation.
Hmm, is this what old people think when presented with a complicated TV remote control? Am I just getting old?

Aye, download a graphic patch, read the wiki tutorials, and you should be fine. My fortress got to 30 odd people before I pushed my luck with a sandy pool deposit, drowned out my entire miner population, and I dont want to wait untill the next caravan for some more picks.
