I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet, but I know how many people would like EVE to be nativly played across two monitors. I'd love having a full screen of space, and having a 2nd screen full of chat, market info, and whatever else I could fit over there. I've got a 17" monitor with plenty of space, let me use it!

I'm for anything that would let me actually have real estate while I play this game. Seriously, Eve has just about the biggest spacehog of a UI in the history of computing. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

I suppose having quad monitor support wouldn't be harder than doing 2 or 3 monitors, though I would imagine it would suck up a bit more resources. As long as I can use both of my monitors, I'll enjoy it just as much!

So long as it didn't just place the existing screen over two monitors (I can already do that) but let you separate out the various sections to that the centre of the action isn't split down the middle, then yes, would clearly be useful.
I suspect though that the development 'cost' in resources by CCP would be excessive for this to not be a part of other screen-handling work.

Since this is already possible to spread across two monitors, and the result is that the UI for ship control falls across the split. I'd like to see being able to move that UI!

So you would just adjust the screen location, and move the UI from there?
Whatever it takes to let me use the other half of my total screen area will work for me.

Currently the only way I've found that I can play one eve across 2 monitors is to use a spanned desktop which then gives the options for a really wide eve window in the escape menu. In theory it's cool but in practice it's kind of crappy and you have to play in windowed mode (which I do anyway so I can have a client on each monitor). The spanned desktop also does bad things to other stuff I want to do on my computer like watching a movie in fullscreen mode makes it chop in half. When streaching an eve window across both you actually have to make it quite a bit smaller than the full multiscreen size too or your speed dial and centered messages get brutalized and hard to comprehend during time critical situations. As the game technically has dual monitor 'work arounds' but no true support I definately give this a thumbs up. Some things needed are: -Multi monitor fullscreen suport -Not having to use desktop span as a workaround because of its negative effects on other computer uses -The ability to unlock and move the speed dial section to be fully on one monitor so it doesn't get ruined -A checkbox in multiscreen mode that causes centered popups and messages to be fully on one screen or the other

I know that the Linux client, at least, will by default span across both monitors in a mergedfb/twinview setup, the only issue being the interesting parts of the screen - your ship and the capacitor UI - get split. Solution: three monitors!

Very much signed. I plan on getting two new monitors quite soon; as it is, doing anything but carebearing is impossible at 1024x768. There's overview, selected item, drones, local, any intel channels you may have, the fleet you're in, the module/energy read-out.
Often when I'm roving, I don't even see my ship or any of the action simply because of all the damn windows. So let us move what windows we want to a secondary screen [With the F11 constellation maps and whatnot. That would be keen].
Do the right thing. Don't leave shuttles in space. |

That's the problem - the line down the middle is distracting with two monitors, and how many video cards support 3 video outputs on a single card?

Edited by: Mazzarins Demise on 13/06/2008 12:55:11 I would advise you read this thread here It's a about Dual Monitors and it contains a reponse from CCP Whisper. Let me copy and paste it actually.
"A long time ago EVE had dual monitor support, but it caused a lot more game-stopping problems than it was worth. Reinstating this is on our huge, extensive, massive, just plain long wishlist of things we want to do.
Right now the only dual screen thing people manage to do is stretch the display across two screens by setting a custom resolution in their drivers and getting EVE to use that. Usually horizontally, which means you end up with two halves of the HUD on either monitor. Personally that would annoy the living daylights out of me.
I haven't seen anyone stretch it vertically though...probably because to do this you would need a more intricate monitor mounting. Which is what you are building, so it would be worth a shot. I'd figure thing like the neocom and station services would still have all functional elements on one monitor, probably the top one. You can of course move the in-space UI elements to wherever you need them.
Not sure how having two really wide monitor bezels breaking up the image would feel though...as stated, I find even just the vertical split irritating...having a long horizontal split would be even more intrusive."

If not dual/triple screen support, then it would at least be nice for proper multiple client support (and most likely easier to do too.) E.g.:
A shared object cache for every running client on a machine.
Option for a "borderless window mode".
Automatic placement on a screen when logging in.
Shared mail state (if I read corp mail on one client/account, I don't want to read the same again on the other account.)
Shared overview settings (I don't want to repeatedly update my overview settings on every account, when they're all the same.)

Just rewrite the UI so we can drag windows like chats, fleet, market, etc outside EVE's main window. Something like tool and palette windows in Photoshop.
1920 or 1680 resolution would be large enough for EVE if one could get all those secondary windows outta the way and keep only the overview and ship HUD in the main window.

Originally by: Inanna Zuni So long as it didn't just place the existing screen over two monitors (I can already do that) but let you separate out the various sections to that the centre of the action isn't split down the middle, then yes, would clearly be useful.
EVE Absolutely needs NATIVE multi-monitor support (unless it would cause server lag)! Yes, you can already stretch EVE over monitors with hardware. But, to clarify it's a function of your video card and it's video driver NOT the EVE client - if we could unhinge parts of the UI, size the screen to what we want and put UI (read overview, market window, etc.) items where we want while changing the center point - EVE would be much more awesome than it already is BUT fix lag in massive fleet battles first!

We've already brought this up.
Quote:
6.0101-08-0035Multiple Monitor This is possible in the graphics engine but is not supported in the UI code and would require a significant rewrite. Also, we wouldnæt be able to do this with the map because of the seamless zoom, unless we completely rewrite the map. It should be possible to only render in part of the frame, but things like the ship HUD, messages aligned to the centre of the screen, and the overview, etc, would need to be fixed. All possible, but a lot of work.

How ever you can currently use eve over multiple monitors in a varity of different ways. For example adding a custom resolution through the nvidia control panel.
However the biggest problem and this is mainly for dual monitor setups, is spanning eve across both LCDs leaves the FOV focus point dead in the center which is A: ugly, B: leaves the log in account/PW space split which is problematic and see the damage, warping to and other such messages are split making them problematic to read.
A simple ability to allow us to manually shunt the FOV focus left or right would go a LONG way to getting people to adopt for multi monitor setups.
Also bar none the biggest problem, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS9ehCdxyy8&feature=related
That........................... the further we span our horizontal eve client the worse the distortion along the edges get. FIX IT!

I would love this now, but I think it would be even more needed once Ambulation comes out. Since Ambulation seems to be more about adding flavor, feel, and immersion to the game. It wouldn't be very effective to have to minimize everything just to enjoy the environments.
I'd like to be able to shove all my windows to the other monitor and see the stations in all their glory, unmarred by UI. Also, I talk a lot. |

How bout a compromise?? I don't want 'stretched' dual-monitor support. I want two completely independent monitors.
Perhaps it would be far easier, and even 'do-able without much work', to have where the second screen is blank, as in no 'world' (space, ships, items..etc); just a blank space where chat windows, market windows, container windows, etc.. can be dragged to to de-clutter the display.
It would be a start... |

And please dont' render the game across two screens. If people want that, put an option for it. Let us use that space for windows and overview, and allow us to clean up our game screen to look at this beautiful game.
As another option, but would have performance issues:
v-------------v EVE is a tactical game, so having two cameras wouldn't give you an advantage, it would just make multitasking and fleet commanding easier.
This was done really well in Supreme Commander, and would be awesome with only a mild resource hit. ^-------------^
But ignore my derail there, what I really want to see is my windows on one monitor, EVE on the other.
Hell, allow us to just de-attach the game windows from the EVE window when in windowed mode, kind of like newer versions of Photoshop. No reason for those windows to be locked in game =>_>= But implementing this would probably be harder than just true two-monitor support. |

I would like additional support options for 2-4 monitors.
Right now the only serious (and very expensive) option is purchasing a Matrox Triple Head 2 Go Digital Edition and three identical LCD Monitors. It's the only way that you can use any video card that can support a single monitor with very high resolution atm.
I currently use two LCD's of different resolutions for my two accounts. Fortunately they run very well with a quad core cpu, 9800 GTX video card, and Windows 7 that I have in my main pc.
However more options would never be a bad thing! __________
