Now we out in 0.0 get something from this extremely unimpressive expansion. Extended downtime. To say I am annoyed that the server will go down at 9PM my time and be down a whole day is a gross understatement.

Shhhh.
Sick of hearing moaning. This game needs this expansion you selfish individual.
Of course a major change, that brings a huge number of new features into the game for many of its players, requires an extended downtime.
That it will only take 24 hours is impressive.
Grow up, take your head out of your own selfish world and recognise something that is a positive change for the game as a whole, regardless of whether it directly benefits your aspect of the game.
The fact that it benefits the game as a whole, thus attracts new players and decreases the drop out rates, thus sa***uarding the game's future, allows you to continue playing in the first instance.
I eagerly await this expansion.

Why FW will fail, and why they shouldn't even be THINKING of releasing it right now:
1. The exclusion of a large proportion of current pvp'ers, ie: those in alliances. Right there you are telling people they either have to give up everything or not participate.
2. It won't be well organized because the majority of those who try it will be in NPC corps, and thus not function at all as a unit. Plus keep in mind the potential for scammers taking advantage of noobs in the new NPC corps... I'm sure some PC corps will join the militias but they will be outnumbered by the people who just join the NPC ones outright.
3. Those who are in FW have to follow "the rules" (such as what ship types to use). Pirates and other non participants do not. Locations of the hubs can easily be scanned out by covert ops ships and invaded by T2 nano ships which will far outclass what the participants will be using. It will be trivial for pirates/gankers to use an alt toon in a militia to easily locate targets for their main(s).
4. Once someone achieves rank, etc within the faction, if they then want to "move on" to the 0.0 endgame they have to give up all achievements and ability to further participate. This is the WORST flaw of all, since you will be nonsensically forcing players to make a tough choice they should never have to make.
5. It's being implemented without ANY mechanism in place to recover from bad standings, either before participating, or afterwards. This is a huge mistake, tantamount to leaving a wheel off a car and calling it done. Stuff like this missing should cause the expansion to be delayed... But no, like SOE, deadlines must be met, fundamental flaws and important parts that are missing be dammed!
6. It's being balanced in such a way as to EXPECT players to be using (and losing) the new faction ships, which are far more expensive for newer players to lose than conventional T1 frigates and cruisers. The rewards don't look good enough to sustain a player in this.
CCP has yet to respond to any of these concerns.

Please take note that CCP has learned from their mistakes and actually allocate more time than they probably need.
People get more ****ed if they say it will take 4 hours when it ends up taking 12 hours.

I agree... a day downtime is horrible. That was my first thought. To all of you who started the name calling to the previous posters saying the same thing: We pay for this game service and we pay by the day. To say that someone can't complain about that is absurd. Quit the name calling because you can't understand or unwilling to think.
In RE: to the pt made about CCP not responding. I agree there as well. They are not like other business' that I have dealt with that will respond to posts to satisfaction. See newegg.com If someone has an issue with a manufacturer, they respond right in the forum and Newegg always makes it right no matter what. I am not saying the game isn't great and not worth waiting for a day. What I am saying is that at the least CCP should reimburse all members one full day of gameplay for lost time necessary and inherent in THEIR company/business. This should not be passed off to the consumer. We did not buy a subscription by time to get it taken from us for free.

I suspect CCP won't respond until the expansion failure cascades into disuse.
Then we will get a "why aren't you faction warring, we thought everyone would jump in?" Dev blog much as we did over jump freighters which were terrible when first rolled out, and then later improved.
CCP has brushed aside all objections and proposed solutions, so clearly they won't consider our input at all until the thing fails. The most worrisome is that they are rolling it out without the ability to recover from negative faction standings, (they say they will add this "later"), which means that those who DO participate better realize that they are going to lock themselves out of HUGE sections of Empire space with no way to undo it until "later".
Faction warriors will end up locked out of two of the four empires, and because they can't be in an alliance, are locked out of ALL of 0.0. I wonder how many who are considering participating realize this? I hope they like fighting over that section of lowsec, because that's ALL they will be able to do. Until "later" of course.

tbh being locked out of gallente and minmatarr space in my case doesnt matter because i have no reason to go there.
Being locked out of 0,0 doesnt matter because my corp is nuetral to all entities anyways.
The only thing that changes for me is that now rather then having to go to 0.0 for pew pew, I can join a militia and shoot people in low sec without a sec hit and do so while gaining faction standing which for me is invaluable. (jumpclones across all of amarr and caldari space ftw?)
This expansion is sorely needed, and I believe it will have a healthy participation. |

Paying for two accounts, I perfectly well understand what folks are saying about the extended downtime. I try hard not to be too judgmental about CCP and the strange decisions they make as to game metrics. We all know from past experience that this "patch" will screw something up. I guess we will all see what it is this time. Excellent point made previously as to the ship[ types being a burden on newbies. CCP obviously doesn't care about newbies, as they appear to rest on their laurels that old timers will continue to pay to play. Most newbies I talk to are sorry they got started, as the "metrics" don't allow them to achieve in any expeditious fashion. Time in the game should not equate to ability or survivability when it comes to classes of ship type. I don't care who is flying a battleship, but a game metric should never allow a smaller class ship to Pwn another.

24h for delivering a patch might be long, specially as most players won¦t be affected by the new stuff.
But it¦s always better to allocate more time for a patch and open the server too early instead of having to delay the startup several times.
And btw: A whole new Region (Black Rise) is added to the game, which might need some heavy DB-rework.

I have played Eve for more that 2 years now on several accounts... previous and during my time in eve I have played 12's of other MMO's and if you think a day once every 6 months is too much downtime...never leave Eve Online because you will be sorely disappointed. I have played games like SWG that were down for days...once almost a week and this was NORMAL. So honestly those of you who are whining about a single day are really... ignorant to what happens in other games. For gods sake enjoy the day away form the game... go out get some fresh air and enjoy some life outside the game... for an entire day lol. |

Most other games CHARGE YOU for their expansions. EG WoW anyone? CCP provides them for free. So consider that before you whine about a downtime. I don't care if it takes 2 days of downtime as long as CCP has tried their hardest, and they usually do, to make sure their patches go worry free.

Im glad that others see why I get so irritated when people complain about the expansions, then complain about the downtimes.. then talk about how their 15 dollars a month gives them this huge entitlement to whine and complain.
They should just remember why they are still here. Frankly I am glad that such a good game was released in the first place, but its still going strong, and this expansion in just one of several that is going to revolutionize the game as we know it.
Can't wait to see the patch notes so that I can see what was added that I missed during testing. |

1. The exclusion of a large proportion of current pvp'ers, ie: those in alliances. Right there you are telling people they either have to give up everything or not participate.
This only makes it fail for people already in alliances, likely doing pew pew already. They were never the target demographic, so no fail here, right?
If they absolutely want to play, they already have an alt or two they can use.
Quote: 2. It won't be well organized because the majority of those who try it will be in NPC corps, and thus not function at all as a unit. I'm sure some PC corps will join the militias but they will be outnumbered by the people who just join the NPC ones outright.
So it's a bad idea to put all the n00bs into a single, easy-to-recruit pool of primordial newbieness? Are you like an anti-darwinist that refuses to believe higher lifeforms could possibly evolve?
Quote: 3. Those who are in FW have to follow "the rules" (such as what ship types to use). Pirates and other non participants do not. There was a post about someone petitioning this, the reply was apparently that it is exploitation of unintended game mechanics or something if you fly the 10.000 km from the gate to the deadspace.
So no, pirates won't have an advantage over the militia. They must enter the deadspace using the same ship classes.
Quote: 4. Once someone achieves rank, etc within the faction, if they then want to "move on" to the 0.0 endgame they have to give up all achievements and ability to further participate. Sounds like a problem caused by _success_, not failure.

No one would need to recover standing yet, FW isn't even released.

A lesson learnt... Sell your faction ship and buy lots of T1 crap. Same as 0.0. ---
