Op, you quite clearly state you jumped into your hugin and left for the action.
Soon as that mega de-agresses you should have been bumping and webbing him, move him off the gate, quite easy in that ship.
Much as I appreciate its a poor way to lose a mail you could have avoided that from happening.
Dont fake the mail, just get him next time.

Jumping to not give you the mail means he isn't posting his losses either. They only jump out when they are going to lose the fight, ie the last bit of fighting they can do is make your day a little tougher, because they lost at pvp.
Make up a fake killmail. Its your killboard, do what you want with it. Sometimes its more fun when they jump out cuz you can give them a lolsetup. The stupid setup serves to show that you killed a ship but for some reason you didn't get the mail.

heh one of our guys jumped into highsec once, as he was in a dual plate damnation and well, concord will kill you a lot faster than the average anti pie squad.
and I did it once, thought I was clicking warp to on another gate 
Hell no don't fake the killmail. I totally disapprove of lame ass carebears jumping into high sec to deny anyone a killmail, but faking a killmail is just as bad.
