***BTW someone correct me if I'm wrong, I have never travelled internationally and this is information I found on the internet***
As far as bank cards go, its pretty much down to your card issuer whether it will work overseas. cards bearing the cirrus or maestro logos will work in a lot of places, visa and mastercard are pretty much your best bet, theyre global, and insured.
Insofar as exchanging currency, if you can find a place to exchange that doesnt charge massive commission (most places in uk for example charge very little or none) then its generally preferable to change your money there, the exchange rates are visible, all your cash is changed at the same rate, and any fee is a one off.
Banks can and do charge a fee for every transaction, plus a commission on exchange, and the rate you get from them may not neccesarily be the best one. add to that itll vary daily, so rates might get worse over the course of a trip.
From personal experience, having travelled rather extensively, I wont travel without enough currency to survive for a couple of days, this covers me against losing my wallet or not being able to find a cashpoint. I also like to travel with currency for any area an aircraft would reasonably expect to divert to (for weather/mech failure etc)
ie; travelling to africa id carry whatever currency my target city used, plus euros, as a european destination would be the most likely stopover.
Its down to personal preference of course, but take it from me being stuck in a strange country with only the clothes your stood up in ****ing sucks. (even more so when theyre gabbling some heathen foreign lingo ;) )
*EDIT
