I will be going to college next year so I want a laptop that will be able to play eve well. Also, I need one that would be good for school (fast, long battery life, etc.)
My choices are the Dell XPS 1530 or the Macbook Pro. The cut off is around $3000 so I would be able to highly upgrade both laptops.
What would you recommend I buy? Also, if you have any advice on which upgrades will make eve run better (or just the laptop in general), feel free to tell me.

Umm.. I'd have to say Mac. I wouldn't take a Dell, HP or any big corp assembly line PC type laptop unless I was getting it for free or paid to field test it. For best play, custom build a desktop gaming monster..

I'll add my request for a laptop, but lower the budget to $1500. I don't feel like starting a separate thread, so I'll hijack this one.
The laptop would be purchased in the U.S.

Fast and Long Battery life, aint really gonna happen with the Dell XPS. I have the M1710 which is max specced and the battery goes for about 3 hours 30 mins when browing the web, working on docs. Never played games without it hooked up to the mains.
The m1530 is a great machine but if you're going to spend crazy money on a laptop, get the 17" screen, it's awesome. If i didn't have the 1710, i would definately buy the M1730.
Can't comment on the mac, never owned or used one.
If you only want it for eve, school, playing some games (i can run crysis with decent gfx and race driver grid with medium/high but i can't run NFS Pro Street. dunno why.) i would recomend you get a max spec 1710 instead.
just my humble opinion. ___________________________________________________ ~Vistilantus |

I just treated myself to an XPS1530 a month ago, and it's brilliant. Runs Premium and non-premium client side by side with no issues. Records Fraps nicely from Premium, and can also play CoD4 without turning everything off.
And I got a reasonably basic spec one too. -- 2d EveMaps My blog

If you like OSX and/or dislike malware get the Mac. --
There are countless games in the world. There are at least as many ppl that dont like one or more rules of said games. That never stopped smart game designers from creating good games.

I actually read last month that apple has less holes in the security than MS BUT Apple are much much slower at fixing the security issues than MS is. Also a lot of hackers, virus programmers, etc. are starting to focus their attention on macs now.
As far as upgrading goes...you can forget the mac on that one. They are ULTRA expensive to upgrade and isnt worth paying the price. You can get a very very very nice PC laptop for $3000...dont waste it on the mac. You will be disappointed....also battery life is gonna be pretty much the same everywhere you go. Average is about 2 and a half up to 3 and a half hours.
And read what Ombey said....if you ever wanted to play anything else other than EVE on your mac....good luck ;) Cause it wont happen.
Why were you thinking of a mac anyway? Do you just wanna use the 1000 different "I" programs like: Iphoto? Itunes, Ilife, etc.? Nothing you cant do on a PC. Or did you just wanna join the mac "elitist" club because they are the cool "in" things to have at the moment?
Im telling you man...go with a PC and ditch the Apple. Not to mention Mac's are EXTREMELY overpriced.

Spend 1500 on a decent laptop for school work, one that will allow you to log in from school and change skills, and a $1500 desktop for where you sleep as it'll be a kick ass gameing rig for playing EVE.
Added benifit is that you won't be playing EVE at school, so you may actually pass your courses.
Even the best laptop is going to be a poor performer next to a mid level desktop.
Get both, you'll be able to use the laptop as a 2nd computer at home for web browseing/mining/mission running.

Macbook Pro, without question.
Better physical workmanship (Dell = cheap commodity laptop)
Better looks (Brushed Aluminum vs cheap colored plastic, no contest)
Better Operating system (OSX vs ANY Windows flavor. Mac wins hands down.)
Just as easily upgraded (all you can really ever upgrade on a laptop of any make is the RAM and Hard drive. Everything else is embedded in the Mobo.)
Oh yeah, and you can play EVE on your Mac, no need for Winblows at all. (Thanks CCP!)
As far as upgrades, max out the RAM on your Mac, and upclock the vid card. Not sure if they still do this, but Apple actually UNDERclocks the video cards in Macbooks to increase battery life. I think there is downloadable freeware that will up the clock speeds again.
Of course, you will STILL get better overall performance than a comparable Dell, even with the underclock, simply because OSX is just an order of magnitude or two better than XP or Vista.
Enjoy your Mac!

Edited by: Emily Spankratchet on 11/06/2008 20:52:09 To be honest, I'd look at which one would be more useful to you at college. Which will probably by the XPS, unless you are thinking of running Boot Camp on the Mac to have Windows on it. I'd imagine that there'd be lots of work-related stuff that only runs in Windows. (Unless you're doing design, graphics or something similarly Mac-friendly).
Also, YMMV with the Mac client. I haven't had any problems with it, but I don't run it a lot - I use a Windows machine for most of my Eve.
Having said that, the MacBook Pro is lovely. I've used all sorts of laptops and the Macs are the only ones that have been designed by someone clever, rather than being slapped together out of ugly plastic and covered in ugly stickers. Even little things like the magnetic power cord and the retracting case lock thingies are lovely.
Edit:

Pfft, engineers. What do they know? Tell that to my mates in Structural Biology, we now run an entirely Mac-based shop on the desktop. A decent OS with UNIX underneath? It's like BSD, but you don't have to be a masochist.
Also, ITT: The usual Windows/Mac flame war. Leave it, it's not worth it. I've used and administered VMS, IRIX, Linux (various flavours), BSD, DOS, Win 3.11 to Vista, OS 9, OS X, OS/2, and BeOS. They're all ****.

I have a macbook pro, love it, best (designed and constructed) laptop I've used. After using it for last 3 months hard to go back to other laptops, trackpad is best I've seen, widescreen is awesome, backlit keyboard is quite nice, just general things like that.
I'm a long time Linux user and initially I did have a lot of peeves with OS X but after forcing yourself to live with them for a week or so you find yourself pretty well adjusted. Biggest adjustment at least from GNOME (my desktop env of choice in linux) was keyboard shortcuts but like I said after a week or so it starts to feel natural you just get used to it.
Eve mac client works fine for me when my corp was part of IAC I was in a few large fleet fights against AAA and others using the mac client wasn't too much lag.
screenshot
biggest fail no options for premium graphics (silly move by ccp tbh). Other problem was Ventrillo support in OSX (There is an OSX vent client but half the codecs aren't supported) I had to run Vent through a windows virtual machine which was annoying as hell. My corp uses ts now so no issues there... |

If you need a mac, buy the mac book pro and run boot camp to run eve/games. The only reason to buy a mac is if you NEED a mac. They do not make financial sense (commence to flaming).
You might also look at some of Dell's more buisness oriented laptops (latitude line). I have one of those (D630) and it works very well running Windows XP SP3. Be sure to get the nvidia card. That tweaked to about maximum will only set you back ~$1600. Couple that with VMWare Server and you can play around with various unix/linux distro's you may need for class work (assuming you're a software geek).
I will second the other suggestion here that suggested buying a cheap laptop and maxing out a desktop for gaming. For starters, you will not need the extra distraction while at college. Second, if you have two machines, you can set up some sort of replication of your documents. There is nothing worse then dropping your laptop on the way to Kinko's to print off your report thats due in an hour (been there done that).

I'm sorry but I used to think that untill I took computer classes, AW is no different honestly. it's all looks. and AW is overprices they charge 300$ to get to 4gb or ram from 2gb or ram. it's normal 667mhz speed ram too, to anyone with a brain or some that would build their computer if they could (laptops are not easy to build) they can see that alien ware is a rip off.
Also as far as mac goes, thier laptops are no different either. Other than the OS. Just buy a M1530 best bang for buck or an HDX. and then INSTALL MAC OS. it's not hard and your computer won't suck and cost you 4 times more than the parts are worth.
and NEVER have a computer company build your desktop computer, buy a case but never let them build it. More than any compnay NEVER let alienware build your desktop computer.
4000$ for a dual 8800GTX set up, 2.3 duo CPU 3Mb cache, 20 inch screen 1900x1200, 4 Gb of ram, 520 GB of hardrive space.
RIP OFF!

No support for windows xp so you'll have to haxxor it into it the hard way by modifying and burning a custom xp cd with sata drivers on, I did and it works ok. No gigabit port. Some quality details are a bit crappy like edges, but you dont notice them so much.
Pros, very much speed for the price, fast cpu, fast gfx. Played world in conflict in toilet with touchpad and was almost best in my team :p Very good looking, from outside and inside, brushed alu around keyboard, keyboard very nice to type on. Outside is some rubbery surface that feels goood and red. Like leather or something. HDMI out. Pretty quiet. Good webcam. 300 mb wireless but I have only managed 130. Prolly my routers fault or drivers or whatever. About 1.2 hours batterylife. 2 audio exits. Flashy extrabuttons.
so that's why they are currently so cheap.
