I've noticed that, like me, there are some former beta testers out there who for various reasons quit the game shortly after it went gold and are now back at it again. Is it just a coincidence that a lot of former beta testers are back, or is it because EVE has finally met up to our lofty expectations? I'm thinking its the latter.

TBH,
the game was VERY VERY full of bugs, and it was a very slow work, My personel reason was that, those loads of bug actually killed my intrest for the game. now its works in a way that you cant ever think about how it was.

I left for the same reasons. But I didn't give up totally. I kept my account and trained my skills. I just didn't play. I'd check in now and then to see how things were going. In beta, I was a pretty diligent tester--I filed many bug reports. I think I was discouraged originally because so many of the bugs weren't fixed before release. There's still a lot of bugs left from beta, but the game feels more finished now.

Hmm, I was a beta-tester and I played on, never quit and am still playing... True, the game was full of bugs back then (I remember objecting to releasing it in May, it was FAR from ready at release) but they get smoothed out one by one... The game is, currently, very playable and they can really start adding more content (and I'm not talking about Shiva yet, I mean give us some more T2 stuffages and Elite frigs...

I was also in Beta, I played every day I could and for many hours. I liked it even though there were a lot of bugs. Char wipeouts happened few times, things didn't work at all from time to time...still I played.
I didn't start to play after it went gold. It had too many bugs I dared not to play. They had the debug logs running all the time, it slowed things down a lot. Also those nagging error screens were annoying, clicking those tens of screens to get anywhere and then came another set of error screens.
I had to take some months off to cool myself
But now I'm back here, again. Now this works a lot better than in the beta. It still has some problems but so does every other online games out there. This is still the best of those other games

Edited by: Tripp Orsam on 11/05/2004 20:17:33 I tested EVE for its final month, was the most fun I had ever had playing an online game mostly due to the fact that I am a HUGE fan of the old Elite series of games by David Braben, so being accepted into EVE beta was really a dream come true for me and not just another game to test. I could not carry on playing upon release because of serious financial difficulties, I was very sad that I could not continue playing ERRrr.. i mean testing! no wait, if it was released then it would be ok to call it 'playing', *phew* glad i cleared that up, could have been imbarasing.
Yes it had its bug on release but if you compare the EVE release to other releases (*cough* Anarchy Online *cough* SWG) it was really not even half as bad. I dont think its possible to release a bug-free mmog, because of 1 simple fact, the only real testing it can get is once the game servers are flooded with players.

I too am a former Beta tester who decided to not buy Eve due to my Beta experience. Then I saw the 10 day free trial at Fileplanet and thought, "what the heck, maybe it works now."
Boy am I glad I came back! It's what I was hoping it'd be a year ago. Never forget, a Jack-of-all-trades is master of none. |

There was an invitation to former beta testers to return to EVE for a trial program. A good number of beta testers have returned under the trial and some are reactivating accounts.

After giving up a brief try of EnB, I tested from phase 4 upwards (maybe 5, it was a year agoand i can't remember) until release. I didn't continue simply because at the time I felt the game wasn't at a stage where I felt it was good enough to pay money for, mainly due to bugs. Planetside became my main game after that until I started getting bored of it in January.
Tried EnB again and found it was still bad. So tried Eve again in February and WOW! had it changed! The game has really grown into some of it's potential. I'm having a blast now and don't see myself leaving for some time! -----------------

I played in the last two phases of beta, and it was ghastly. Not only couldn't I understand how to play the game, but the vast world was so underpopulated that rarely would there be anything/one to talk to. Plus, talking was a challenge all in it self.
This lead me to describing the game as fifty-thousand pennies of suck, to a friend of mine while examining the game selection at our local EB and affected me so much that I jumped to EnB and stayed there up until about 3 months ago when I canceled after hearing about its impending doom.
A short time later I recieved my 'Beta-testers free trial' mail and decide to give it another try, needless to say after the second time being told I couldn't log in because there were already 800 trial accounts in use, I resubscribed and I am having a lot of fun. The game is much more polished, and while I see the occasional assert window, it's not like the ***t storm that it was before.
Very good work, I'm enjoying myself.

As with many others, the buggyness of the beta kept me out of retail, however it is nice to be back into things :) I think I can file this one under "not suck" now ^_~

I took part in the EnB beta and paid and played that to the point i was only playing for the guild. So i knew EvE was still full of bugs i decided to back to EnB ended up getting bored again and EvE 3 days trials came along so i tried it and haven't looked back since.

I also don't really belong in this thread, but from a beta testers perspective, back then i thought EVE was gonna flop major if it was released in may. I was actually thinking of a winter release then..... Funny how many issues didn't get solved even then....
This game is above bugs. How buggy it might be, it offers an experience that no other game could give (and still, not a single other game does that), and i guess that's what kept me around.
As for those to whom this thread is directed at, the only difference between guys like them and like me and Kyroki, we were able to stand the bugs
God i hope you all get this comment right, it isn't negative towards anyone...

I was in Beta, but decided not to get the game because 'world of warcraft' was supposed to come out last september. As most of you are aware, it did not come out and so i waited until january and it was still not out. So I rejoined the eve community.
I just cant trust those Blizzard guys anymore.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

I'm one of those beta-testers who came back after the free trial offer.
Part of the reason I never joined after the beta ended was that I, too, feared a number of bugs that would keep the game from running smoothly.
However, the largest portion of the reason was that I am a college student, and I was in the end of my junior year at the time. Now I'm about to graduate, so I finally have time to play again.

Came in at Beta 7,
At the time the phrasing I used was 'had promise but only if they actually FINISH the game...
And then they went live when the game was as far as I could see, half finished. I wasn't going to give up my other paiying online addiction (eq) for a game where half the stuff didn't work.
Then I recieved an invite in the mail, said what the hell, came back and found I enjoyed the game, and they had followed through and implemented things that would allow ME to enjoy the game...
And now I'm staying.

Edited by: Ae0n FlUx on 12/05/2004 01:17:37 I just finished posting in the thread about updates. I saw this one and thought Id say "Hello" to all those former beta testers like myself who came back.I guess im a pessimist..I always see the glass half empty..not full..and as far as the game goes..after the day "Armageddon" and the relentless lag and slide- show that insued and the 8+ downtimes and all the the forums back in those days of people hoping this or hoping that or betting on this or betting on that..nothing has changed really..yea..the mods have changed..yea..theres not as many error messages..but theres just as many issues(if not more) and still alot of unfulfilled promises (even from pre beta and gold release) that havent been fixed.
I want to see CCP come up off of this Jovian Race!!..(and I dont mean a piece of skin either or a drop of blood)
I never thought I would ever say this..but the EVE Galaxy seems to be quite packed now..will there be anymore added systems?
I joked before with a friend in beta that I wondered how in the world CCP was going to explain the bugs that they obviously couldnt fix to their clientele. HAHAHAHA!..It doesnt surprise me one bit they have integrated those bugs into the plot.
Hmm..my character is stuck in a system and cant seem to get out..everything is black...voila..CCP issues a travel advisory as if its some type of tornadoe warning.
I have yet to see a player owned station. Did CCP mean for those stations to be unseen?..Did they mean for noobs to have to play the game for a year and join alliances inorder to see those wonderful new things?..and now..the only thing I really wanted out of the game..seems to be dropping like rain out of the sky..The Jovian "pieces"..LOL..will wonders ever cease?
Ok..Im glad to be back..but im a little disillusioned. From the looks of things..I pretty much know what my next 6 months in this game is going to be..(mine..hunt...skill up...work for that level 2 cruiser and mine ...hunt... skill up...work for that better gun or better ammo)..and then maybe..just maybe..Ill be lucky enuf to join an alliance or a mega Corp where Ill be able to actually see and experience the developments that CCP are coming out with now.
In beta I remember our lil corp talking about how great it would be to build towards a station and owning it.I never even imagined that the stations would be mysteriously floating out there and "found"..and then..all those stations would be owned by a group of friends who enjoyed PvP (and needed to spend the majority of their time PvPn inorder to keep their station)
I dont know really...the whole face of the game has seemed to change. It almost seems harder now to start out than when in beta..and I think its due to those who have gained power making it near impossible for those without power to do anything.(I have a friend who started a Corp from Earth and Beyond..only in this game 1 month..and a larger Corporation saw his corp as an "easy kill"...so they declared war..and then another Corp (seeing them as an easy prey) jumped in and declared war too..so..this fledgling small noob Corp is forced to dedicate their entire playing experience to fighting and losing what they worked so hard to have?)..Thats not what CCP painted this game to be in the beginning..and I think they're going to find its going to be their achilles heel in the end. Atleast in Shadowbane you have the option until level 35 to stay in a safe territory. Its almost as if you must freelance and stay in your noob corp and not have any of the Corp hangars or friends in your own Corp...unless youre able to take most anyone on in this game.(so..in theory you could lose absolutley everything in the game in a week or so and be expected to start over?..thats not gaming...to me anyway)
I liked the idea in the beginning of this being a player run game..but..it seems as if maybe CCP has allowed that to go a little far..anyone else agree?..probably not..but thats cool..
Im sure in 8 months or so Ill get the hang of things..

i reactivated my account.
in beta i bought a merlin.. not sure if there was insurance, i didnt have it if there was. went straight out to some area to fight stuff and died.. seemed like it took forever to gain the money for my merlin. I closed Eve, deleted it and didnt open it again : I played EnB and thought about eve.. i didnt wanna spend money without trying it first though. When people starting talking about EnB getting closed down alot of people on the EnB forums posted videos of Eve on ebportal's forums. The large corperation battles, the battleships. the idea that a corperation of 100+ members could literally own a sector of space, protect it, go to war over it, etc.. just.. awesome.. hundreds of people working together for a single goal.
i dont remember if beta was like this.. maybe i didnt give it a chance.. but eve is now the perfect mmorpg. if I were going to make an mmorpg it would be almost identical to eve (some changes of course). first time ive ever been able to say that about any game..
it's possible i've matured a bit. this game definitely requires some maturity to play. patience should be listed as a requirement on the side of the box. ________

Edited by: Ifni on 12/05/2004 13:41:17 I was only in the final phase of beta, but it hooked me!
I didn't subscribe to the game when it went live because i had just finished my second year uni exams and though "blimey, didnt do too well, should probably cut back on the gaming" the fact i was playing eve all night and doing revision in the 4 hours before my exams probably didnt help!
i had kept my eye on eve just itching to come back, and when the christmas holidays came around i signed up to play and ive been playing ever since. its exam time again now, so i should probably cut down....
the other reason i came back was the player owned structures, i remember from beta hearing about self constructing player owned structures where all you had to do was anchor it and deliver the minerals to it, and this egg would literally grow into a station!

yeah im one of those people. I played to the very last day of beta, but it wasnt enough to hook me unfortunatly. I returned to the game a month ago and frankly im beating myself for not keeping on playing a year ago.. i could be one of those 11mill skill juggernauts by now!
the fileplanet trail thing was CCP's best idea yet, thats what got me and my friend back to the game ______________________
