So with eve launching in Japan on the 28th of this month, and the players being on the tranquility server, how many players do you think will be on at one time compared to the 30-45k on usually? |

The game has a tutorial that gives you a mining laser and a railgun and tells you to go shoot rocks and red crosses. It teaches you nothing else. It's been that way for 8 years, so are you really surprised that there are people who aren't aware that this is a pvp game? --Jafit McJafitson |

PC games don't do too well in Japan, they prefer consoles even more than we do. Those who do play PC games tend to be retired men with a little too much time on their hands. This is from first hand experience from my visit to a PC game show in Tokyo. |

Not be racist or anything but the Japanese tend to be more into video games than most people of other cultures. So we can expect a huge jump in players.
However they also tend to be rather biased against western games and tend to prefer the games that were made in their own country so we might not see much of a change at all.
CCP is going to have to advertise harder than they have ever advertised before. And they are going to need to add a handful of ships that can turn into fighting robots. |

They have a complete different vision of gaming for sure, anyway for CCP it will be a complete different challenge. Please them and you'll get those by thousands, displease them and you'll can forget that market. They also have many different payment methods we don't use, this might as well cause some new accounts losses.

The Japanese players aren't going to play during the EU TZ, and thus we aren't likely to see a general increase in daily PCU. I expect we might see a significant increase in the number of people playing in and around the AUS TZ though (Japan being +9 and Australia between +8 and +11).
These players are of particular importance to me because they're likely to play when I do. :)

My greatest fear is that CCP is using the Japanese client with NEXON as a test bed for the rest of us. If that happens where CCP finds that NEXON is a good deal for them and forces upon the rest of us, It will be time for me to say goodbye EVE. As others stated, NEXON doesn't do crap for the hacks, and has been my experience that their customer service is even worse than CCPs petition queue. I smartly ditched anything to do with NEXON. Currently Japanese players who want to play EVE must bother themselves with English. Guess what? Video games in Japan are NOT in English, not any more than they are in Urdu in your local store. This means that the world's 2nd largest videogame market is but non-existant to EVE.
So now Nexon is gonna distribute a localized EVE client through their available payment methods. Maybe Japanese and other Asian got a reason to fear Nexon's own games, but EVE is not a Nexon game, it's a CCP game which Nexon just translates and distributes.
It will be good that this works out, as DUST's natural market is Japan too... EVE residents: 5% Wormholes; 8% Lowsec; 20% Nullsec; 67% Highsec. CSM 6: 100% non-Highsec residents.
EVE demographics vs CSM demographics, nothing to worry about...-á |

To be honest English speaking people can be pretty snotty about language too. Try typing some foreign language in a local channel and I guarantee you will get an "English please!" outburst from someone within a couple lines. If you question this you well be told all about how America invented the internet so it naturally follows that everything must be written in English.
I am fluent in 3 languages and can get by in a 4th. I have no idea what my Russian colleagues are saying but I do notice they try a lot harder to speak English than English-speakers try to speak Russian... |

Most times I've seen Russian being spoken in a local channel, I've not seen 'English please'. But the only language I have seen on a regular basis other than English is Russian in a local channel. However you do get 'English please' in the English help channels but that's not surprising as they're English channels.
Never heard anyone reply with America invented the internet either.
As for English speaking people not trying too hard with other languages, that's not surprising either. If your country's language was a fairly standard international language, where's the incentive to learn other languages.
It's like me I did some German and French and even a small amount of Turkish, but I've forgotten it all as I've never had to use it.

Pretty unfair thing to say. I've played mmos with lots of Asian players, including Japanese, and they aren't any worse than any other group. You have Americans who won't try to play with people that don't speak English, just like you will find some Japanese that won't play with those that don't speak Japanese.
One of the best guilds I was in outside of Eve was ~90% Korean. Despite the communication issues it was a great group. They were extremely trust worthy and very group focused. |

Those who do play PC games tend to be retired men with a little too much time on their hands. This is from first hand experience from my visit to a PC game show in Tokyo. I think Japan's still a little behind the rest of the tech world, as far as home PC use goes. They missed the PC/internet boom of the late 90s because their monopolistic local computer maker Oki insisted that they stick with it's clunky old OS. So they were kind of isolated from the rest of the world using Windows/Mac/Linux. Eventually they gave up on the Oki system, around 2005 maybe, and started using the standard OSes. But I think PC/internet culture still isn't as well-established in Japan as it is in the rest of the developed world. They're comparatively a few years behind still. |

However they also tend to be rather biased against western games and tend to prefer the games that were made in their own country so we might not see much of a change at all.
CCP is going to have to advertise harder than they have ever advertised before. And they are going to need to add a handful of ships that can turn into fighting robots.
We enjoy games from the zany to the tactically complicated.
Eve is the disgia of MMOs, it will be enjoyed. Nexon is known for its ability to advertise for sure though.

I'm in Japan and joined eve 5 weeks ago. I can confirm that the client already supports Japanese as well as having Japanese chat rooms in the game.
As some of you have mentioned, if Japanese people wanted to play eve they would have already joined up. |

pfft trust me, if CCP patch in transforming titans they'll come in droves.

Maybe it's not really apparent from manga, anime and console games... but thoroughness, perseverance, patience and precision (perfectionism really) are a big part of Japanese culture. And of course skill in mathematics. All good traits to have in EVE, the ultimate bean counter sandbox MMO. We might see some pretty damn good EVE players coming in. |

The numbers probably won't rise the slightest, unless Nexon is going to advertise heavily over there. It's going to be rather horrible if its true that the players that are already playing EVE normally are now forced to play through Nexon. CCP better not pull a stunt like that with the rest of us.
But a localization will likely make the game more accessible for the Japanese players that like to stick to their own people. Maybe CCP should open up a new area for them, east of the Russian drone regions
On a sidenote: anyone knows the situation with the CHINESE server? Serenity was it, right?

No. It's 100% true. I was there during Oct, too late for the TGS but there was a smaller event happening. Paradox were promoting a few games along with a few other developers. They where all strategy games, so games like Shogun Total War and Sengoku where all the rage along with a few small and local game developers. I went along there to see what Paradox where doing since I'm a big fan of their games. You know how the usual gaming crowd are fairly young from the ages of 14 - 25 with the odd middle aged guy looking a bit self conscious. Well it was nothing like that. It was LOT of older men with a few younger guys getting their butts kicked by them. It was rather amusing to see grampa's getting excited over these games. |
