How about it? A big, red shiny button (well ok, it can be a small, grey and dull one) that, when pressed, saves ALL your settings to some nice, safe, location far away from the rest of EVE?
And then another button you can press to get the settings back from that backup file and put into effect?
No more losing all your settings every time the game gets a patch, or your computer has a hickup, or a new sunspot is born, or the wind happens to be from the northeast while you're wearing green socks.
And no need to play the EVE version of Whack-A-Mole, the grueling game of Guess-Where-All-Your-Settings-Are-Saved-In-This-Version when trying to manually save your settings (which, btw, is totally unplayable by a good chunk of Eve players who simply lack the tech savvy to find and copy them). Just make it save every conceivable setting, from graphics and sounds to overview and chat window positions, and pack it up in a safe place (but please TELL us where that is).
You could even make it an XML file so the hardcore tweakers could brea... fix their game to their hearts' content.
I don't think the above would be entirely impossible to implement, nor require too many years of manpower to code.

Personally I'd still prefer the client to save my settings server-side like other games, but I can accept that this might be an overhead too far, so the OP's idea would do as a second option. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation or alliance, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... |

I would like to see import/export buttone on the login screen preferably. That way, we can quickly export if a patch window appears and import again after the patch.
It should export ALL settings for ALL characters to a safe location, preferably chosen by the user. If I play 3 different accounts, 9 characters in theory should be backed up with one click. If, for some reason, I want to format C and re-install Windoze, I can export all my settings to another internal or external drive, or even another computer on my network.
It's something that's been asked for for a long time. It's not hard to implement, even a batch file can do it manually if you know where and what to save. A small backup program called externally can backup everything to the users desired location and doesn't need any more than the location of the files to back up passed across to it, (considering that some still prefer to use "/end /lua:off").

Server side settings saving would be nice indeed, but I'd settle even for local saving.
You can always grab the local settings and stick them on an USB flash memory stick. Everyone has one in their pocket nowadays, don't they? :)

That's fine if you know what to back up and where it's located. Microsoft, (in their infinite wisdom?) have added a little detail in Windows Vista that prevents you from accessing the "my Documents" folder from the File explorer. That makes it extremely difficult for anyone to access the settings to back them up.
Even if they can get into them, it's hard to find just the files that are required and you can end up backing up the whole folder just in case you miss something. With all the cached data, this can be very large backup with a lot of completely unnecessary files.
CCP know exactly what files need to be backed up, what they are called and what they contain. It won't take more than a few minutes of coding to include a button that exports to a user specified location and one that imports from the location given by the user. I could do it myself in Visual Basic in about 20 minutes if I had the information regarding which files to back up.
This isn't much to ask and would save a lot of users a lot of grief.

You have my vote for an export/import all settings feature. The time I've had to spend dangling in space messing with my overview (thank god I don't live in 0.0 or it'd be a real problem) after patches is crazy.

The periodic loss of client settings is one of the most abominable things about Eve. On the one hand it reveals that the devs are clueless and incompetent, but given that that is as it is, a local save/restore would be a simple workaround, even if it has to be done separately for each char on each account.

Oh, I wouldn't go so far as to say the devs are 'clueless and incompetent', EVE is a complicated game. However, a server-side storage of character settings (with a clear delineation in-game of which settings are account-wide and which are only for each character) would not only help resolve this issue, but it would enhance playability for those of us who play on multiple computers. (I personally play on my desktop, my laptop, and occasionally my friend's laptop.)
Care should be taken, however, to keep certain settings client-side only, for example graphics settings. I'd hate to hop on my friend's 1280x1024 screen with settings at 1920x1200...

Having to re-make overview settings etc each time you reinstall is a bugger - i have a script used for clearing cache which also has the side effect of leaving your cache folder with only the settings files in it (making it much easier to back them up)
I personally use the "/end /LUA:OFF" switch on my eve shortcut as that keeps all settings etc inside the program files folder, rather than the new path of c:\documents and settings\etcetc, however this script works fine for both file locations...
Now - heres the script: ********************************************************************************************* rmdir /S /Q cache2 xcopy /S /E /K /H /I cache cache2 rmdir /S /Q cache mkdir cache mkdir cache\Settings mkdir cache\Browser xcopy /S /E /K /H /I cache2\Settings\* cache\Settings copy cache2\prefs.ini cache\prefs.ini copy cache2\Browser\bookmarksSites.txt cache\Browser copy cache2\Browser\trustedSites.txt cache\Browser ********************************************************************************************** All you need to do is copy everything between the stars (not the stars themselves), and open a new file in notepad. Paste the script in notepad and select "save as", ensure all file types is selected and name the file something like clearcache.bat (.bat is the important part).
Once this is done, all you need to do is move the .bat file to the location of your settings. If you use the /end /LUA:OFF switch, then copy the .bat file to "c:\program files\ccp\eve\clearcache.bat" or wherever you installed the game to. If you don't use the switch, your settings are in your documents and settings folder. I still have mine there from the first time i ran the game, an example of the location would be "C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\d_program_files_ccp_copy_of_eve_xx.xxx.xxx.xx" (jamie being my windows username, and the X's being an ip address). Simply copy the .bat file to that folder. You may have to show hidden files by clicking "tools" then "folder options", select the view tab and select "show hidden files and folders".
Once in place, just run the .bat file. It will copy all cache and settings to "cache2", then move only the settings back. Once this is done you will have a clear cache, and nothing but settings left in "cache" and "settings". i suggest you copy these 2 folders at this point and keep a copy somewhere safe. There you have it, all done. Whenever you reinstall just copy your safely kept backups to the default location and skip the tedius overview stuff.. :)
I also make a habit of running the script once a week or so to keep my cache clear.
Feel free to suggest improvements/ask questions etc...

Edited by: Astria Tiphareth on 25/07/2008 10:36:58 Having had a crash today that wiped out all of my settings AND somehow got EVE into a state where it thinks the settings I restored are invalid (I restored from a backup and EVE just ignores them, overwriting them with new defaults), I'm going to bump this thread.
Fix the damn settings system CCP! Redoing every blasted overview and GUI setting from scratch every time the game sees fit to lose the settings is not conducive to me being happy and playing EVE.
EVE without personalised settings = unplayable.

I had the same thing happen to me today. After the latest patch I have noticed more people complaining about graphics problems, me included. I had a few nv4_disp.dll bsods in the past two days. That patch did a number on my graphics driver. Anyhoo, it takes me half an hour to redo my overview settings. Redoing them three times in two days makes me want to fly straight into a star.
Help us out here CCP! Add a backup overview button please!

I play on a notebook but have also an external display which is much bigger resolution than my notebook..
You may see where this heads... :)
I've painstakingly set all the UI in EVE fit nice for the built-in 1280x800 -- BUT, the game, without 'profiles', warrants adjusting UI placements with ANY display resolution changes.
BAH!
I've culled out the common client side stuff that doesn't matter what resolution and isolated all the important files I need to keep in tandem -- one set for the native display and one for the external.
At this point I have two sets of settings and manually switch them depending on the display I'm going to use.
My next step is to automate it somewhat. Snatching out the common stuff like people/places folders, IGB bookmarks and so forth regularly for backup.. and then also to swap the settings files for the appropriate display.
This sort of situation, along with migrating to a new computer or crash restore are all covered pretty much if you just backup the various files whenever quitting EVE.
Notes and people/places are server side but the folder arrangement (along with market quickbar) and possibly various other stuff, is client side.
I've not determined ALL that is in these client side files but really it's not a big deal since I am simply backing up both the cache and settings directories at this point.
In either case, Vista or XP, you'll need to set windows folder options to show hidden files since the branch of folders you need to get at are beyond (at least) the 'local settings' which is hidden and/or system.
Once you can get that behind you, just backup (WinRAR it all up!) the 'cache' and 'settings' folders.
While it would be nice if CCP would make a simple backup/export/migrate sort of BUTTON it's a very simple matter to do yourself.
Now on the other hand, profiles for multiple sets of settings would be friggen nice. ;-)
Then again, when I am done with settling this matter it'll be pretty easy.. as easy as simply backing up these important things.
It's actually kind of funny that there isn't some sort of 3rd party app to cover all this stuff already given what a useful thing it'd be.

FWIW here is a working solution to the 'profile' swap I came up with. Works fine with my XP single user (admin) install. I began spreading it out on my multi user vista install but blew it off since EVE runs like crap on my vista notebook.
Various files:
INTERNAL.CMD - swaps to internal display EXTERNAL.CMD - swaps to external display SWITCH.CMD - creates a .RAR backup of present state, restores new 'profile' XXMKLINK.EXE - used to create desktop visual to show if internal or external is active link (dl three icons for this to use to denote via a desktop shortcut - internal or external active and an error condition) WINRAR (using included command line version, RAR.EXE)

NOTES: - If you choose to use something other than RAR.EXE you will need to modify SWITCH.CMD beyond simply the few "SET" statements.
- You need to create the initial internal and external .RAR files manually before the scripts will work properly -- named as denoted in the 2nd & 3rd "SET" statements in SWITCH.CMD
- Create an initial text file named INTERNAL.TXT or EXTERNAL.TXT to denote which settings are active before you first run the script(s) - any/no content is fine.
- Create shortcuts to the INTERNAL.CMD and EXTERNAL.CMD for your desktop.
The display status icon/shortcut should take care of itself without any initial seeding.
