We're lying to ourselves to deny that - there is no room for being polite to eachother, and helping eachother out in EVE (except on the corporate level, maybe), due to the dark nature of the game, and the competitive nature of the PvP system in place. Heck - even in a lot of corporations, members are total asswads to eachother. Most alliances I've been in, and I've seen a lot over the years, don't even socialize on a large scale - they just fleet up when its time to, about the extent of working together. The corporations just keep to themselves, and have minimal mandatory interaction with the other alliance corporations - Could be they just aren't interested in each other, aren't on the same wavelength, or are even competitive (political tug, power, ISK). Spying and Sabotage is a widely used tool in large scale warfare in this game as well - this is partly made possible because a lot of alliances like this are easy to corrupt or even divide/defect. It may seem harsh, tense, and uptight - but welcome to EVE. Personally I'd rather tolerate this over the Myspace-like crap games like WoW. It's a dark game with dark gamers - you can't seriously expect it will attract fairies and teddy bears, eh? You cannot say that it is much worse than other games though - there are tons of other MMORPGS out there, and a lot of them are full of just as many, or almost as many, *****s. The guy who was posting was going over the top though on our players being sadistic - this is just not true. Most sadistic actions in EVE are just typical EVE PvP that soft gamers such as himself experience - they may get podded, lose SP, and be wardeced and camped all day - and think its sadistic. Well - hate to tell that poster, that it's in common practice - it's something we call Total Warfare. The poster is so used to the usual flowers and ice cream, he just couldn't see the real picture of things, or even fathom it - he just saw what he interrupted it as - though it is mostly exaggerated. Don't get me wrong, EVE is full of griefs, but a lot of other MMORPGS are too. Try playing RF Online in example - you get camped/PK'ed on that game 90% of the time - you even get PK'ed by members of your own faction; this actually can make leveling difficult beyond level 30 - griefs can't disrupt the players ability to progress in EVE like they can here in RF Online. But - yea, this isn't a pure PvE RP game with no PvP and dungeon raids like WoW - a game where guilds suck up to everyone they see, so they have a extra hand to do their little dungeon running. If players are too soft, they need to stay away from PvP oriented games - or learn to live with it, or even embrace it.

Certainly beats the public server run by that christian clan who've config'ed the server to autokick you if you type "pee pee" in teamchat. Someone called me nasty names in local recently: loved it. Goons own too much space and makes it prohibitive, though not impossible, to own any nullsec of my own: love it. Got podded in 7q and lost a head full of +4's: loved it. Never fell for a scam myself, but they're allowed and even encouraged: love it. Lost my computer for a month cause of the boot.ini problem: ok didn't love that one too much but I got over it. Returning these same favors: Hell, I love that even more. Am I a sadist? Evidently, but I teach high school kids for a living, so I kinda knew that to begin with. Am I some immoral deviant because I enjoy a game that allows such devious behavior? Well, I'm also an atheist so that may be true too; however, the connection between in game behavior and out of game behavior is tenuous: I have never stolen goods, killed or harmed a person, or carjacked someone only to sell their car back to them, though when I die, I can say that I have experienced such things, thanks to this game, without having to trouble myself with the morality of said experience. I suspect the credit card company I use to pay for my account is far more devious than I am (Goons beware when AmEx starts an alliance). The bottom line here is that we, humanity, have urges that defy social norms, and yet here is a game that allows anyone with 15 bucks a month to express these very urges without fear of corrupting the social values in place in our real life communities. Does this make us all sadists? Hardly. In fact, its seems to me like it makes us all the more rational adults who recognize the necessity of separating the devious behavior we love from the real world where it might actually hurt someone. If you were ever actually hurt when you lost a months worth of work to a griefer in Jita...well, I think maybe you shouldn't be on the computer at all, you obviously have some psychological issues you should be discussing with a professional--and since it seems you won't be playing anymore, can I have your stuff?

In short, there is a lot of misinformation and half-informed opinions out there, which makes me kind of sad. I try to correct people who spout this nonsense, but it usually doesn't take. So many people say the combat sucks, but it's far deeper than WoW, for instance, and there is also tons to do besides combat, unlike most MMOs. I think they're expecting a game where you pilot a fighter in the*****pit.

No, No, and No. EVE Online is good because you can reveal your more sadistic side without the morality of laws, EVE is good because it gives you a heart attack every time you go into 0.0 space, what WOW PVP gave me was some more loot and told me to do it again. Scammers make you want to kill the scammers, pirates make you cautious, fleet on fleet warfare makes you think about what to have in a group situation. This is true Massively Multiplayer, and not a kiddies version of it where you can solo about anything and the only thing you do once you get to level 70 is kill the same dragon over and over again to get gear which will be useless by next expansion. I also find it funny that the guy thinks that everyone plays EVE has been raped by their daddies and trying to put the deep emotinal problems that has caused in an online space ship game. That gave me my lols this morning.
