why must CCP bring down eve daily? Wouldn't it make more sense to just have downtime 1x per week like most MMORPGs do.

I don't know the exact technical reason, but it releases the stress of the server and let's it refresh itself. Just go outside if the 45-60 minute downtime is leaving you with nothing to do

There are a bunch of things done during downtime that are unique to EVE. Mostly: 1. Database cleaning 2. Changing of sovereignty/outpost structures/occupancy 3. Re-seeding of certain exploration sites 4. Re-seeding of certain asteroid types
Doing all these things once a week would make things less pleasant for anyone involved and the server would start to lag more as it went more than a couple days without being cleaned. So it would generally suck. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

This big super computer server needs regular downtime like it is to keep things from malfunctioning due to the sheer scale of it.

Sure, I'm all for a super long downtime that happens once per week and totally blows away the Aussie timezone's ability to play for a whole evening. :)

Easy. This is why
1. Owner ship of null sec systems changes every day 2. Corporations need to be added to FW within 24 hrs, who is going to wait a week to get into war. 3. Same goes for corp wars. 4. CCP maintains the game. Unlike some mmos i have played where they are left to rot.
This is the most looked after, updated mmorpg i have ever played. Long live EVE.

I guess there must be a reason for it, but for those who think the whole thing gets turned off for an hour to give the servers a rest... thats not it.
I'd imagine the thermal stress induced in all that equipment as it repeatedly cools/heats up would bring about a fair few hardware failures.
well, thats my 2p

That would only make sense if EVE was like other games.
When CCP comes to your job and tells you how to flip burgers you can tell them how to run their Game servers.

Like what other MMOs? When I played Everquest (and still do on occasion) they have a downtime only when patches/fixes are required (once a month or two). --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

Note: many other MMO's have many many servers, with their downtimes spread out so there is nearly always a server you can use. Also Tranquility is like 50x the size of those servers (ok, slight exaggeration ) --- Sig Starts Here --- Lord Haur - Imperial Academy Logistical Support
