Agree. Beside Eve is ran on a TRS80 with cassette tape drive they need to power cycle it once a day, the poor thing cant handle being left on for more then 24 hours.
Now this is funny.

Actually, if you're running an IT services, there are good and valid reasons to do exactly that - a scheduled change/maintenance window, every day, where it's 'expected' that people will get off your cluster so you can do housekeeping, upgrades, fixes, backups etc. So even if you _don't_ have a need to do anything much one day, it's worth taking it down anyway, simply because then you don't get complaints about unscheduled outages.
I do exactly that (run IT services. Sysadmin for a pretty large networking tools company.) and we have no scheduled maintenence. When we need downtime, we schedule it, and we have failover systems in place to minimize the impact to our customers (no new purchases if the DB is offline is about it).
That's the proper way to do it. Not simply turning off production systems regularly for no reason to force people to get used to it.
You're both right. I think the biggest part of the problem comes from Eve being constantly updated, and single shard.
The single shard effectively means that they're running a single database server for all of you monkeys. As a data warehouser myself, I can tell you that's no mean feat (especially on MSSQL Server....)!
There's several things that I imagine need cleaned up/done every day: - Commit all transactions. Eve uses isolation level READ UNCOMMITTED, presumably for speed. I know this has bit them once for sure in a custom function that they wrote for sov calculations. - Apply code/schema changes across the distributed system - Nightly backups - Restart the servers to clean up any lingering memory leaks - Restart the database and database server (It's running Windows afterall...) - Restart the nodes (they're also running Windows) - Security patches to the OS
I'm sure that there's more that's I'm not considering right now. Now, I mentioned that I'm in the data warehousing business. I know for sure that we take our master databases down, and push all of our web requests onto replica/standbys when we have scheduled (or unscheduled!) maintenance.
That wouldn't really work in a real time database situation - the data is too volatile. I suspect that even applying the WAL to a standby would barely begin to solve their data redundancy problems (and wouldn't address activating the standby for periods of the day!)
No, I doubt very much that there are many ways around the nightly downtime in an unsharded MMO server.

If the servers went down once a week there'd be a point in the week, about two days after the DT. Where there are no asteroids left in the entire universe.

It's fairly trivial to put such things on a timer to respawn.

I would much rather have one evening a week totally gone with a downtime, than have every evening chopped in half by a downtime right in the middle of my available playtime.
As it stands, I get on before DT, and think "Not much point doing anything too lengthy, DT's coming in an hour". And after DT I get on and think "Not much point doing anything too lengthy, I gotta hit the sack in an hour".

Actually it is obvious if you look at Server stats thne you can see that they only have a downtime where there are no players on the server - so it is the players that make the down time not ccp.

yeah I did. You tried to pretend that the undeniable physical fact of your timezone being 12 hours out of phase with the server's was irrelevant and made a "NO U" post to gloss over your terrible whine.

Actually, the power cycling only takes about 5 minutes - but then they have to press play on the cassette drive, and wait for a few while the tape plays past all the other random stuff - cause if you try and fast forward those things, the game won't load half the time.
An hour per day (which happens when I sleep), FREE Expansions, dynamic universe, lots of players online, and a staff that actually interacts with it's playerbase? I'll take it...

take WoW for example, wow has a downtime each week, but each individual WoW server has what, 3k players? EVE has 30-40k players, and has maintenance once a day, makes sense doesnt it?

No other MMO works on the same scale as Eve. Yes DT hits right into my prime playing time, but if you look at the reasons for the DT you can see there's no real way around it.
What we really need is the DT kept on time, or made as fast as possible. You can't eliminate a process that does so many different things that are essential to the smooth running of the Eve-universe. The only way you could get rid of it would be a complete and total re-write of the entire Eve server code from scratch.
Many other games that have a weekly downtime, also have it as a very long weekly downtime, it takes them 6-7 hours to do what CCP manage to do in what is usually an hour, every day. And they're doing it for a sever with a few hundred people on at once calling itself an 'MMO' in comparison to Eve most MMO's are just 'large' multiplayer games.
