Seriously though, grab an alt or friend domi or something with a decent tank, assign fighters, profit.
I dont do that, but I am pretty the reasons are being able to loot everything and keep everything without docking / dropping loot somewhere. Reason 2 is not everybody as alt and friends arent always there.
Any carrier pilot worth a damn will have an alt. Are you going to rely on someone else for your emergency cyno?

best way is to take the following steps:
fit your carrier, with 2 smart bombs, cloak, drone control unit and tractor beam. rest of ship tank.
undock, self destruct.
buy a raven, start ratting with that, and you will end up at the same outcome, and will have saved a lot of time.

I like all the people who say, "well a carrier can be the best ratter if you use it right."
You people are dense in the head. Reasons why ratting with a carrier in a belt is bad:
1) You are ratting so you will get bored and you will not be paying full attention. In 0.0 this is very bad as you will die eventually. 2) When you die in a ratting carrier, it is extremely embarrassing to you, your corp, and your alliance. If you lose a carrier while ratting they should boot you out for being so dumb. 3) You lose a ton of isk if you die, the risk/reward is not worth it. If you lose an insured BS, who cares. But if you lose a carrier even if it is insured then that is pretty harsh as a lot of the isk is in the fighters and mods which you will not be able to retrieve from your wreck.
People who get a carrier and instantly think about ratting in it **** me off for some reason. It's like they train for a year to fly this ship and then only think about ratting in it? The ship doesn't really have anything to do with ratting and that's all you want to use it for, ugh. It's especially bad when a carrier-carebear gets into an actual pvp capital gang and doesn't have skills for capital remote reps and doesn't have any smartbombs or heavy neuts. --

I you'd like, I can give you some suggestions for good systems to rat in. Additionally, you should faction fit your carrier, supplement deadspace and officer mods as desired. ______

Actually I've ratted with a mate in my corp before and isn't wasn't that bad,but we had 5 in our gang as well.First the system be rated in is a dead-end system with one entrance, and we have a pos in said system so we parked a dictor there,to give warning of any unwanted visitors. Then I checked out the belts in my drake, and went I found a decent spawn, got full aggro, then everyone else would warp in,with fighters assigned and demolish the belt in short order, then they would salvage/loot while I found the next decent spawn, but I would not advise solo ratting in a carrier, you'll atttract every pirate to come gank you,all it takes is one scout to report"solo carrier ratting"

use three accounts atleast for optimal ratting, one carrier and two tanked salvage ships, assign fighters to both tanked salvage ships, lock down a system to yourself and always keep your carrier orbitting at minimum range around a friendly pos, get inside the shields and warp off the salvage ships as soon as anything neutral or below enters local.
thats about all their is to it.
P.S. make sure the pos is well armed preferably with guns to take out small ships like tacklers.

Chimera does align in 9.3 seconds with 4x inertial stabs and 3x polycarbs, without polycarbs it does it in 14 seconds.. Raven does align with ratting fit and with V skills in 15.3 seconds..

Astarte is a bit slower getting safe than a Deimos though, and more expensive ofc. Also, when small gangs enter system, I head out of the belt with the mwd and let the bad guys find me. They're going to warp to 0 to find me in the belt and by then I have plenty of distance to decide if you want to engage or not. I can fit a PvP setup no problem and rat very effectively. Loot/salavge isnt so good in a Deimos though. I can make a ton of isk in bounties to offset that little bit of loss and buy whatever I need. I have had many 500mil weeks and many 200mil days in a Deimos and no unexpected losses in it.
You might say a Raven can kill rats faster, that MAY be true but it cant clear the entire system nearly as fast as a Deimos. By the time the Raven has gotten to the next belt, the Deimos has them dead.
So to me the best ratting ship in game, at least in those areas is by far the Deimos. Cheaper than any BS and faster at getting around. Its a very quick warping ship, quick enough to keep running safe spots or to dock if in a station system when you get too many neutrals in system.
But I would probably like to try a Thanatos for ratting, for lols if nothing else. ONLY in a station system, I would nano it too. Keep an eye on local and region/constellation intel channel no doubt, or go with a PvP setup if I had plenty of good, reliable help around that would come to my aid if deemed necessary. in that case it would make pretty good bait for some kills :).

And just btw I did rat in Raven back in days for many months and there isn't really much of chance to get killed if you just keep the simple tactic.
1.) Always aligned to your safespot (make it near to some moon etc for landmark) 2.) Fit cloak 3.) Avoid top and bottom belts 4.) When warping to belt, first always aling towards the safespot, keep aligned with fullspeed and after that kill the rats - by doing that you get instawarp right when hostile enters local - and ofc cloak after you hit the safespot (and change your warp, sometimes warp to 70, sometimes warp to 100 etc) And switch your safespot from time to time incase someone has probed it by some reason.
I did alot ratting in nearly 30 belt system, I never got caught there in belts. Of course I lost lots of ravens by fooling around in ratting fit trying to help alliance m8s but that's another story
Soooo, by sticking in those simple rules you sure can rat in carrier wich is fitted with inertial stabs, my Raven had align time of 15-16 seconds then and never had troubles by that. And in good system you really make so much ISK by bounties and loot that the price of carrier is nothing.
That system was perfect for ratting, belts were shape of U letter, you could always warp to zero and there never was asteroids on your way. Rats were always close to that "center" of the belt etc. Really relaxed ratting :)

The best place for carrier ratting is the area in and around Covryn. Pain is a 0.1 deadend system that works quite well.
I'd recommend gallente fighters to kill the serpentis rats. ---------------------------------------------
