So I have decided to try ratting with my carrier. I read the sticky at the top and it seemed more for pvp.
Anyone have any recommendations for a full setup? I am a total carrier nub.

Wishing to rat in a carrier proves your nub status mate :)
A raven is faster - Heck, and domi is.
Dont waste your isk and so on - Either use it for pvp, logistics, or sell it and take a few days off ratting. Many BS can rat faster than a carrier, and has alot more potential. A carrier IS ONLY a pvp/logistics boat. Not a ratter :D

What about using a sacrildge? Would that be optimal? If so what setup for ratting?

Really? What arguments do you have to back this statement?
If it's only that they just aren't used that way, well, there's a first time for everything. For exmple, the first vaggabonds weren't nanoed, they were used like you'd use a Deimos. And there was much whining about how it was inferior to the gallente ship and worthless. So worthless that a corpmate once had a chance to buy a BPO for 2B, and he regret not having done it.. ------------------------------------------

(a) Carriers take quite a while to warp from belt to belt (b) Carriers take quite a while to lock targets (c) Ratting carriers make comedy killmails. They also take quite a bit to warp off.
The only sensible way to rat with a carrier is to do it in your own system, carrier parked outside of POS shield, and delegate fighters to something quick, and even then it's nice to have intel what's around, since getting bumped and consequently killed hurts.

Steps to rat in a carrier :
1. Check local 2. Fit tractor beams, salvagers, sensor boosters and nanofit 3. Check local 4. Undock 5. Check local 6. Find a few juicy belts that you cycle thru back and forth while doing step 7 at the same time 7. Check local 8. ... 9. Check local 10. Profit ! 11. Check local 12. Share profit with Trevor Warps

a) 3 istab, 2 nano + 1 cap rep <- this makes you very fast, comparable to BSes. b) 3 sensor booster + 2 target painter meds, you don't need anything else in med slots anyway c) self-destruct, and in no way you will be tackled if you actually look at local
1000+ dps + add a remote cap rep so you don't have to scoop the fighters at all. No ammo use, excellent cargo, but if you fight against long range rats you won't get to tractor them as easy.
Best belt ratter in-game(... mothership is better).

a/ With 2 inertia, 2 nanofiber and max skills, it align about as fast as a BS. While the warp speed might be slow (no idea, I don't have a carrier), that must not be much of an issue if you have most of the belts around the same planet.
b/ Farming properly means you kill only the BS, so hte locking time isn't too long.
c/ Comedy killmails because they aren't used much like that, and most people tend to mock and not to think if they see something weird, but I expect it to change over time.
If it is more effective at ratting than a BS or marauder, then there is no reason not to use it for that purpose. ------------------------------------------

1000+ dps is quite easy to reach in some battleships.
I'm pretty sure I can outrat most carriers (if not all, with ease, too) in my phoon. I haven't ran the numbers in some time, but I'm pretty sure no amount of nanoing and sensorboosting will put it above a battleship, especially since most battleships can go nano/damagemods too. Even dedicated armortanking BS can be shieldtanked and filled to the brim with damagemods for beltratting.
I don't see any reason to rat in capital ships... unless you're REALLY bored, REALLY rich and REALLY want to.
Delegating Fighters is definetly better.

If you'd ask me which tires to get for your lamborghini murcielago so you can tow your farm equipment over muddy terrain, id rather point you to a lamborghini tractor than a set of tires.

It's definitely doable if you don't mind risking your carrier, but probably not worth it. I had an alliance mate who used to do this, until one day he got caught by roamers, heh. Next 15 minutes consisted of him screaming for help on alliance/intel and them screaming for backup on their channels. In the end, I think he survived, but he uses a Raven now and assigns fighters.

Fittings :
small tower of type appropriate to your local ice stasis webification battery x 2 warp scramblig battery x 2 small guns x 10
This is to repel nano gangs so they can not just bump you out of the shield while killing you. Then
Fighters appropriate for the local rats 2 friends or alt in AF
Tactic : deploy POS, hug force field, assign fighters, profit -- Coming to you, Assault Ships fix, by the people saying that the Gallente Recons are fine. |

This is the way to do it ^^ A guy in my former alliance did loads of isk in drone regions using a nano thanatos. He had no tank at all since it wasn't needed (the rats would never eat through his shields) Somebody set up us the bomb |

Ships that can do 600+ dps while still having a tank probably can be counted with the finger of one hand, and you must spend quite some time running after targets, but that's a valid argument.
Yet, dps isn't the main reason why carriers seem to be better ratters. The reason is loot. One of those carrier-ratter I know say he get up to 7500m3/hour of loot. ------------------------------------------

Edited by: P''uck on 04/07/2008 16:36:15 If you're going for loot you'll suffer even more from the horrible turning times.
edit: and don't say "but what if the enemies come close", because then you'd just take a close range BS and simply outrat the carrier with bounties, again.
and another edit, just for the record: when you hit about 800dps output all you need as a tank is a medium shield booster and two hardeners, for beltratting... unless sansha, then you'd probably do something similar to your armor.

Sit at a pos and assign fighters to your friends I believe is the only feasible thing to do.

I dont do that, but I am pretty the reasons are being able to loot everything and keep everything without docking / dropping loot somewhere. Reason 2 is not everybody as alt and friends arent always there.

Theres two ways to go around ratting with a Thanny.
--One--
1. Park at POS 2. Assign fighters to BC (or bigger) ship of your alt 3. Go on alt and go ratting.
--Two--
1. Park at station 2. Sell Thanatos 3. Buy battleship 4. Rat
