everyone has their own code for naming ships. some kind of theme, or some way that they sperate bad name ideas from good ones.
if you dont name your ship, you can leave now. see your self out, and don't forget to kick yourself on the way out.
my theme is animal names, but not normal ones, the scientific ones. i also always have AU at the front, to ship its an Australian ship.
for example, my typhoon, the AU Bos gaurus. named after the Gaur, for its capacity to charge and also its capacity to take lots of punishment and keep fighting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaur
in addition, i never re-use a name.
so, whats your code?

Quote: how do you name your ships?
By right clicking and selecting "set name". A text box appears and you can type in several characters, including special symbols and spaces. You need to be in your ship, at the time of naming. --

Yay for smartass responses. Always fun reading them.
My ship names are generally random. Usually the first things that pop into my head when i first sit in them. ---

I like my ships to have names that work both when they have to stand alone and also have the F- prefix to indicate that they are part of a federation fleet.
So my Megathron is In Trouble, which becomes F-In Trouble when in a fleet.
etc, etc...

Edited by: Zinras on 05/07/2008 09:48:10 I just name my ships as stupidly as humanly possible. I figured out long ago that I have no talent for naming stuff, so I name my ships something stupid.
For instance, I had a Drake named "Plywood" and I have a Brutix named "Hello Kitty 2.0".

I change mine at random when I think that someone has scanned it enough times or figured out what ship name is my ship.
Names go from girls names to just random babble and 1337 speak, because they never really live long enough to deserve a real name
Can I just say... don't rename your ships please, it makes finding a single war target in a system with 100+ people in it soooooooooo much easier ------------

Edited by: Bushgallam on 05/07/2008 11:03:30 'I' mostly kind of morph the ship name/type with it's fitting/role, for example, a tackling fitted Ares = Takares or intackleptor, a hign dps Rupture = RuDPSure, a heavily tanked thrasher (is that possible?) = thranker, a salvager catalyst = salvalyst, ...
It makes it easier when I browse in assets to remotely guess what fittings my ships have.

Usually i name them after mythological beings (Banshee, Tor, ...) or cuddly things (Bumble Bee, Lady Bug, ...)
Except when it's Caldari... The names of my Caldari ships usually show my distaste for them...
Oh, and I strongly believe that taking your ship out before it has a name jinxes it --- If it floats, and it doesn't say 'quack', sink it! |

i fly almost only caldari ships, and their names are all in japanese or german. before the name i put a "ticker" that identifies its class.
For example, my nanocerb is the first hac i bought, so it's AC-00 Tenshi (天使), while my tanked cerb is AC-01 Akuma (悪魔); or my rokhs are BS-00 Morgenstern and BS-01 Kanarienvogel. ---

that's how i feel about reusing a name. twice ive bought a ship, and undocked it using a name i used before. the first one got snuck up on by a neutral in a rapier when i was out at DZ6, ripped my retriever to shreds. the second one was almost suicide ganked, got away with a mere 5 structure points.

Stubnitz, former Veto member. Hes very good, made me an alternate one. Hes busy but if you ask nice and have a little ISK he might make you one.

I have a thing for steppe nomads and horse archers, and Minmatar being as they are I name my Minmatar ships things like: Raider, Nomadic Raider, Archer, Warlord, Horse Archer, Rider, etc. ... The exception is my Stabbers who are always named "Very Crappy Vagabond".
My Ares always get named "Nomad" (it's not Minmatar but the name is fitting nonetheless), and my Taranis are always "Hunter".
I used to, in the past, name all my Brutixes "Little Bunny of Doom".

My naming depends on the race the ship is from:
Amarr: Angel names, like Kushiel (Punisher), Duriel (Maller), Briathos (Abaddon)
Caldari: Some mythological beings from Japanese folklore, though I don't like caldari ships and might change the naming of them to something more useful than Mōryō (Heron)
Gallente: A combination of a metal or mineral with a person describing its function, like Palladium Paladin (Myrm), Obsidian Knight (Vexor), Jade Monk (Exequror)
Minmatar: Named after disease ridden, corpse eating filth, like Gluttonous Maggot (Hoarder), Cadaver Worm (Thrasher) or Corpse Fly (Slasher)
There you have it, a almost endless source of ship names.

Tend to name mine after Royal Navy ships - of which Wikipedia is a great help :)
Then design the prefix based on the corp im in at the time CSMS at the moment as I'm in the Caldari State Militia.
A few favourites .. Hood, Vandal, Blackjack, Illustrious, Ark Royal, Furious, Terror, Conqueror....
Otherwise I'll use names from games or books I've played/read - mechwarrior & conflict freespace are particularly good sources for this (my name is taken from the big bad mothership in conflict freespace 2, although I know it means "Satan").
