Whatever takes my fancy, which used to mean following Japanese navy ship naming conventions. But I get bored easily, so now it's whatever. I usually try to pick something fitting, but imo anything at all is better than "Rook Highwind's Ferox".
I die a little inside whenever I see that on someone else's ship. Made me laugh seeing "Lui Kai's Ibis" attached to a drake though

Whatever I get from top of my head or like in my rifters case, it was an insult from my friend as we started =D, my Rifters were Fork I/Fork II and so on and my hurricane was 'Odin's third leg'.

For the most part I lose ships on a regular basis.
Unless it's a special ship it simply gets a number.
I'm up to No. 11 for my Myrms and No. 8 for Bestowers, for instance.

I've only named one ship so far - my Caracal.
I named it Baby Powder.
Not because I have a baby, nor that I use/enjoy/like the powder, but merely because the thought of a powder made from babies entertains me.

Most of them have generic license plate style numbers for example: DX-1031-A for my Domi.
I have a rule though, once that ship survives 3 PvP encounters it gets a proper name as in The Albatross (Harpy AC) and The Seleniar (Hyperion Class BS)

I only name 2 of my ships. The first is the unwavering fortitude, flagship of my fleet of pvp ships and my favorate battleship setup. The second is my caracal, Leeroy Jenkins. No prises for guessing what that is used for

Rokh=Trakanon's Trailer
and then my others are just random...
Badger Mark II=Mystery Machine

For a long time, I named my primary ship the Jerusalem (whatever) because I was listening to "Jerusalem" by Matisyahu when I got my first ship. That ended when I bought a battlecruiser and left my cruiser (the Jerusalem XVI) intact.
My battlecruisers are named after my character's dead fiancee, Mirya Leyv.
My frigates are now named after Minmatar systems - Kourmonen, Ammold, Vullat...
My cruisers are named after minor Norse deities (Bragi, Heimdall)
My battleships are named after major Norse deities (Thor, Loki).
One cruiser - a blackbird - I named "Archbishop's Face" after the Amarr character Archbishop.
All my active ships have the prefix TLS - Tribal Liberation Ship.

It's usually random for me, or named after a ship/plane/creature (whether fictional or not) or just something silly 
I usually go by how the sound 'feels' to the look/role of the ship, if that makes any sense?

I've occasionally been aghast at what I've namad my ships once I've slept off the drink.
