How about GRID and DIRT? Both are amazing games.
While it's nice to use examples, comparing a racing game to an MMO is a little bit extreme.
Well, didn't realize that the guy I was quoting had set that as a parameter for his statement. :)

Ummm wow has 12 million subscribers. At $20 a month ummm I dont think they are complaigning LOL
If this game is Wow in space and get more than a million subscribers realize it is finacially better than eve which in the end is what its all about.
Money
To make this money the game has to be worth playing. Bash WOW all you want. It caters to a genre that well likes it. Me personally tried it and dont. But I have played the original jumpgate and enjoyed it alot. Jumpgate is not a FPS so much as a space sim. Those who have played freespace, or Independance war can relate.
I am looking forward to this game as it has alot of potential and want a flight sim I can actually pilot instead of click here and hope my die roll is better than the person im fighting against.
Actual player skill makes a huge diffrence regardless of items which will seperate this game from many other MMOG's.
Hate on that wak video all you want. Let us make the final judgement when the game is released. ----- Huh? |

Pretty much everything said in this thread is wrong. Let me clarify:
1. This is not a ripoff of EVE. Jumpgate was released 2 years *before* EVE, in 2001. Jumpgate:Evolution is a sequel, basically. Also, it has little in common with EVE, except the fact that both games have internet spaceships.
2. Codemasters is NOT developing this game, only publishing it. The game is being made by NetDevil, and yes they're poking CCP apparently. Last time I checked, the old Jumpgate had about 50 players online, so they have reasons to be jealous
The quest to destroy "Battlestar CCP" has begun. That being said, the last time NetDevil destroyed something, it was their own MMO, Auto Assault, R.I.P.
Ah finally someone in this thread that seems to know the history. Personally I can't believe Netdevil is going with codemasters. Remember back in 2001 when they had all those probs with their last publishers of Jumpgate in 3DO? I do not know why the would want to repeat that mistake again with their new sequel and another company.

...and yet Jumpgate came out 2 years AFTER what could be considered its source material: X - Beyond the Frontier (which in turn was probably sourced from somewhere else). Historical arguments are silly to this regard so its best to stay out of them. As for this new iteration, who knows as to its success? Ill admit I will take a look, but in the end it will just remind me of a MMO X3 which eve (sans flight physics) satisfies just fine right now. ------------------------ Peace through superior firepower: a guiding principle for uncertain times. |

Edited by: Amastat on 07/07/2008 22:10:28 Ok, enough bashing Jumpgate and WoW. Let all the Blizzard-alts and Goons say it's going to be awesome and let them go play it and such. I personally think that EVE and these forums could use a vacation from those guys - at least for the couple months before Codemasters drops the Item Mall bomb onto it like all their other MMO's they made; then we go back to the usual. ____________________

On a side note, if CCP were really in this for pure financial gain - as in 'the most cash in the RL wallet as is possible' - all they'd have to do is sell isk for real money, prerolled/advanced toons for real money, ships for real money, mods for real money.
Heck, at any given time there's a dozen isk seller sites being spammed in the chat channels, and who knows how many things on eBay.
CCP would only need to put these things out there on a site, undercut the isk sellers out there now, and basically kill THREE birds with one stone.
Bird 1: Isk farmers. CCP sells for far less than the farmers can afford, so the farmers go away.
Bird 2: Lag issues. Far fewer sweatshop macro-miners in the game frees up tons of server resources.
Bird 3: My monthly account fee. CCP, after using this idea, can reward me by giving me a free account (this bird added purely for selfish reasons).

Edited by: Forge Lag on 08/07/2008 00:08:51 CCP is as close to selling ISK as you can get without actually doing it. Hands-off playstyle, promoting farming alts, promoting multiboxing, supporting character and gametime sales. One of many scenarios: buy account, train character, sell for ISK. Lets rather not get into this.
Anyway the video had horrible voiceover, unbelievably childish and cheesy. I know nothing about the game but I can imagine it being classic MMO mechanics in space wrapper and I can imagine coping with lag via snap targetting. I can imagine it working. I just cannot fathom what it has in common with EvE.

This guy has it right.
Any of you play Eve when it first came out? A lot of the depth that it has today is AFTER 5 years of steady upgrades and expansions. To expect the same from a new product is foolish.
I Beta Tested Jumpgate. It was a nice game. Unfortuantly the did not have a very successful launch. I think their finical backers pushed them to put the game out too early. The didn't even have NPC's in the game a month before it went gold, mostly because they had planned on having everything player based.
The fact that Netdevil is still around and producing a second version of Jumpgate says a little something. I am looking forward to the beta, another chance to acutaly pilot my spaceship again. No more rebounding of stations and astroids, instead you go BOOM! I have said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who want to keep flying naos should check out Jumpgate.

I'll certainly try the beta. However, yeah, that video (if indeed produced by NetDevil/Codemasters) is pretty bad... way too much awful dialogue. I do NOT buy games with that amount of dialogue in them. It is the worst of "Starlancer" and "Freelancer" combined. There is no doubt in my mind that employees are reading those lines too, not actors; bad acting, and bad writing make it worse.
The other poster that said "EVE has had 5 years of development and it shows" is right - there is tons of content in EVE that NetDevil can't possibly hope to match. They're just way behind the curve... it is very difficult to get into the space MMO field now with that 800lb gorilla (named EVE) in the room that has 5 years' advantage on everyone else.
It looks to be more arcadey... and less strategic (which is what EVE is).

Originally by: Gamesguy It has an fps style aiming system, where even one or two second lag is unplayable.
You try playing cs on 1000ping? Its not possible. Its going to be like that for that game, any battles bigger than a couple dozen people will be completely unplayable.
I bullseyed wamprats in my t16 back home and they werent much laggier than 2 seconds.
Actually, you ever play Mechwarrior 3 online back in the day, like 1990s? That game was fun as hell, but on a modem, you actually had to aim like you were a sniper shooting 2 miles away, and thats with lasers.
I was the best lag fighter in that game.. can still remember the time I ran full reverse with full frontal armor killing shadowcat after shadowcat (it was an energy only match, they always bring Scats and 16 small lasers, I brought 5 mediums and 2 ppcs. could get headshots in lag with those things.)

That video was uter fail. My only real question was, "Mavrick you're with me we're going straight in" and they lived? Clearly the game favors ego armor or something.
I've read about jumpgate, players get only small fighter ships. The big stuff will be npc but somehow it all dies to little player ships, so why again is anyone building big ships? Seriously, would you spend isk for a BS knowing that any frigate could kill it?

Video is terrible, not only about the comments in it, but the voice acting was complete garbage! really shows a testiment to what we accomplish as a community in the eve videos aswell as the official ones... Jumpgate will get absolutely no where if their just intent on bashing other companies... as said before, that video was utter fail! that games gonna get wtfpwnd by eve-online... they just have no idea....
