I live on the edge of lowsec space and I'm looking to just pop a few rats in my spare time. What's the smallest ship that can adequately take on the rats and help me get out of the area pronto should I be hunted by pirates?

I can fly AFs just haven't gotten around to actually fitting one. Should I go with this? __________________________________________________

A damage frigate (incursus, rifter, kestrel...) with decent skills can kill any lowsec rat.
Rats using light missiles are annoying but gun users are easily tanked orbiting close. If you don't have access to level 3 agent you can actually make more money lowsec ratting than with level 2 missions. -- Coming to you, Assault Ships fix, by the people saying that the Gallente Recons are fine. |

I use a Retribution.
I ratted in 0.0 with it.
If I ran accross a high bounty BS rat with a tough tank I changed out to Amarr Navy Multifreqs. Otherwise ammo-less ratting FTW.
It tanks well with hardeners and a SAR II. Put a AB II or MWD II in the mids you dont need to tackle anything to rat so the fact it has no other mids is ok. If you use a MWD II you will probably need to use Gatling Pulse II's and with a AB II you can fit the next size up guns.
It does great DPS.
I like it.

I ratted using a Rifter in 0.2 and 0.1 systems for ages until I could build up enough faction to run Lvl 4s and you can make quite a lot of ISK ratting this low. Once you start fitting T2 guns and tank you can kill them surprisingly fast and safely.

an enyo with neutron II blasters deals a really good dps, and if your looking for a caldari ship then a harpy with neutron II's and a gistii a shield booster can take on any 0.0 spawn

Use a active tanked T1 Frig. You can down any rat with it and lose it without denting any profits you earn. If you can fly AFs try looking for cosmic anomalies in lower low sec for more isk. Will say though expect pirates and learn quikly how to avoid them.

Enyo really.
Fit an Afterburner though, not a MWD, as that will keep your sig radius down but you'll still be able to "catch" the spawns.
Here's an Enyo setup that should kill just about any Serpentis or Guristas spawn:
Highs: Light Ion Blaster IIs w/ Antimatter x4 Rocket Launcher II x 1
Mids: Langour Drive Disruptor I (stasis web - has lowest CPU) 1MN Afterburner II
Lows: Small Armor Rep II Energized Thermic Membrane II Energized Magnetic Membrane II Magnetic Field Stabalizer II
1x small drone II
No rigs
You may need a +1% CPU Implant but they're dirt cheap (like a million isk or something).
Does 226 DPS. Works well enough.
Ok, you might not be able to take a Tripple 1.85m spawn but 950s (even 1.1s) and below should be easy enough. --

Harpy is pretty good at splatting Serpentis rats:
4 x Light Neutron Blaster (Antimatter) 1 x Prototype Cloaking Device
1 x 1mn MWD II 1 x 'Fleeting' Web 1 x Sensor Booster II (Scan Res) 1 x Small Shield Extender
1 x Magstab II 1 x Overdrive II
The MWD is to get into range as fast as possible, then you turn it off when you're in range. Web the target and open fire. If someone comes into system and you want to hide you just safespot and cloak until the coast is clear.
Orbiting at around 500 means that cruisers and above have a really hard time tracking you. Even if the cruisers do start getting some hits, the buffer + resists gives you plenty of time since they die really fast. Frigs and destroyers die faster than you can lock them. Battleships take a few minutes to go down but I've not found one that can tank me yet. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

If we're talking something easy like say Serpentis rats in an 0.4, then even the smallest tech 1 frigates can do it.

T1 cruiser should do the job pretty quick, if a Deimos can rip through 0.0 rats, and Thorax should take care of low-sec ones with no problem.
Getting out if hostiles show up shouldn't be hard though, just watch local and warp to a safe spot whenever someone you don't like the look of jumps in (or anyone at all to be perfectly safe) and then cloak.
Don't get caught on the roids tho.
If you follow this approach you can rat in a Raven (as most ppl do)
Nothing special, not big or clever, just 20 fighters and one hell of a tank.... |

I'm not convinced those ships could take down any of the bigger spawns, but then again I did rat for quite some time in 0.0 space in a poorly fitted Ferrox with low SP. I think several of the AF's could do it, but I'd still go with a BC and some hacs for ships that can do the job well.

Go against the flow and use stealthbombers! But to be true to your question, use a damage interceptor.

Dont need a gistii on the harpy ;) fit a med shieldextender II instead. trust me, it works.
But, an enyo is my preffered ship, works wonders, that little schrimp-like ship.
Havent met a single rat in 0.0 or lvl4 missions that the enyo couldnt handle.

Just for fun did I try ratting in o.4 with an Atron (t1 fitted)... No problems at all ( incl. against 2 thorax style cruiser NPC ).

I have found that an ishkur works fine for 0.0 ratting. A little slow to kill the BS rats but still works. drones enable multiple ranges depending on reqs

if you have lvl V in AF i whould go Ishkur w/ 5 x Hammerhead II:s however make sure to catch aggro first. Fit cloak and warp to SS and cloak and take a coffe break if someone jumps in to ruin your party.
Me myself i have used Enyo to rat guristas 0.0 in Tenal/Venal way back in time.

Edited by: The Djego on 08/07/2008 09:34:50 As sayed, any T1 Combat Frig will do if you have a resonalbe Fitting and some Skills(done it after 5 Days with a new char). A T1 Frig can tank/nuke any Spawn you find in Low Sec if the Fitting is right and you skills are not crap.
A T1 Cruiser is mostly the optimum, fast, resonalble Firepower and Tank, can store a bit more Loot and is still cheap. Rupture, Omen, Vexor, Thorax, Stabber do all very well I can tell. Carcals also do the job, I never flown one, but often meet them it the Belts(ofc its like having a extra bonus spawn in the Belt).
PS.: use a PVP Fitting(Disruptor, MWD, Plate) while ratting, so you are not defenceless and are able to get extra loot from other ratters you might encounter. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!

Hammerhead II are medium scout drones and while you can get 5 of them into the drone bay (at AF V) you can only launch 2 at a time as you got 25mbit/s bandwidth to work with.

This hands down. 3xNeut blst speed honour tank and dmg mod. With hobgob
Will tear the majority of Serpentis and Guristas BSs a new one.
Forget about low sec its a waste of time. Go to 0.0 (not hard to enter with a ceptor) find a belt with BS and frigs instapown the frigs and start orbitting the closest BS. Nice isk just no room for loot... Only pick up 425 proto rails and such... Arguably my opinions represent to an extent the opinions of my alliance and in particular circumstances give rise to a valid "casus belli" claim. |

If I understand it correctly we're talking about low sec rats. Biggest are the BC ones, and I used to kill those with t1 fitted punisher in the days before new chars started with small turret 5. :)
As for isk, IMO most you'd earn from occasional faction loot since the bounties are really not worth mentioning. And True Sansha Warp disruptor is same in Domain as it is in Stain. :)
