so as someone whose first language was a hard-to-pronounce phonetic monstrosity, i get a major kick out of listening to english-only FCs try and pronounce low sec system names.
having said that, thought i'd throw out a few helpful suggestions: - don't go by syllables, go by invidivual letters - don't shorten sounds. ex, keep "kour" as "koh-ur" not "koor" - keep "j" soft. ex, "hojf" as "hoyff" not "hodgf" - split "z" compounds. ex, "eszer" would be "ess-zer" not "eshzer" - try to avoid the "it looks like this word so i'll just pronounce it as such" temptation
and really, if it really looks unpronouncable, just get enough letters into it so that we can identify it. there's rarely more than 4 gates in any system

Edited by: Fangedterror on 08/07/2008 15:15:10 god. I would just like to know where CCP came up with the system names. Some of them look as if they just opened a medical dictonary in a different language and started picking out random words.
Align to "hipp....hipff...oh god d*mit. the one that starts with an H!"

what would be nice, is if you could right click on the gate and it had an option to listen to the pronunciation.
I would love ccp for ever.

i pay ccp more then 15 bucks a month for this game! the least they can do is hire a voice actor. or they could do the ultra cheap meathod and just have a vent server read the names

yeah, but sometimes you're splitting your squads to 6 gates where each gate is a 12 char norse/teutonic/protofrench hybrid, and you have to do it quickly by voice
or need to give a scout report by voice
and yeah, it's easier in 0.0, though i guess you could just do the same in low sec and spell out the first few letters

the only systems that matter have no names, just numbers and letters. Its nice cuz instead of the FC butchering the name, Everyone gets to come up with they're own little acronyms. LONG LIVE MY-W1V.
Also, i think its of little concern if the FC incorrectly pronounces the system name. If your not intelligent enough to figure what hes going on about, then you have no business in the fleet.
I don't care how big the language barrier is, There are only a handfull of systems that have jumps in to other systems that have similar looking/sound names, so there should be no issue if the FC's says "koor" and theres a gate in the system named kour-. If that bothers you, then your just nitpicking.

Caldari names seem to be heavily influenced by Finnish language - where compound nouns like Supikoirankarvareuhka are very common. (In fact - that would make a great system name).

You mean to say that the names of many systems are actual words and not just the end result of a developer slamming his/her head to the key board and using whatever the end result was for the 5000+ systems they had to name and thus is grammerically pronounceable? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

They probably used a program to generate words via an equation or letter list. Similar to how George Lucas came up with all the names for his characters. __________________________

What seems to work best is when the FC just announces the first three letters. Say he wanted everyone to align to Sadana, he would say "align to S A D - Sam Alpha Dave" or something like that.
He put... creatures... in our bodies... to control our minds. He made us... say lies... do things. |

As long as we're talking about pronunciations, is it "Gah-len-tay" or "Gah-yen-tay"? Actually I don't really care about any of the syllables' exact pronunciations, but what sound was intended by the double-l?

me? jee-TAH. leading "j"s are my exception to the soft 'j' rule

supposedly a french-style word so double-l is probably a long l.

We just kinda make up our own names for systems, and being that we all share the same sick, twisted sense of humor we usually know what we're talking about. Anybody who doesn't is a spy.

I'm also sure they did. Coming up with individual names for over 5000 systems doesn't sound like much fun. It's not that hard to write a name-generator that makes names in certain styles. You can find Orcish, Dwarven, Elven, Hobbit, even real-world language name-generators online easily.
