There is a system (I forget which region it is in) that has jump gates to:
M-M.. N-M.. M-N..
guarenteed to cause your gang to split three ways!
Not if you use the phonetic alphabet, which was invented for this very reason.
Mike-mike... November-mike... Mike-november...
Ta-da! Problem solved! Plus it makes you sound more elite and tactical!

theoretically unnamed & unclaimed systems should just have some sort of index number rather than a name exept where the star is especially bright, then the star would be named by whomever's faction is closest to it.

Edited by: Tamoko on 08/07/2008 18:16:46 Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that can pronounce every system name in the Eve galaxy without getting tongue tied or completely butchering it. Not saying I pronounce them in a way that is elegant and intuitive to persons of another demographic, but practically every FC I know either can't pronounce the names at all, or end up with something completely different. The "just pronounce it as such" thing, I guess.
I think the one that drives me crazy the most is "Tzashrah". I've yet to meet a single person that can pronounce it in a way that doesn't sound like iron dragged over gravel. Then again, I prounce it Zash-rah with a very short 't' and it probably sounds awful to everyone else, too ---

I get rather amused when people pronounce it completely wrong by adding in extra letters that aren't even there.
Oimmo -> Ominno Orvolle -> Orbville Osmeden -> Osteeden
etc?

While I like this style and it does sound professional, there are a few problems with it.
First of all I bet there are only a few people will be able to work with the phonetic alphabet (ie know it, understand it, use it). Secondly it takes a bit longer to read and thus you are losing time, somewhat.
This could really work, don't get me wrong, but you need: a. a FC that knows the phonetic alphabet without making mistakes b. a whole fleet that can understand him, and basicly knows what they are talking about.
Now how many alliances can get this together and work? Sure I probably know a few people/corps that could do this, but alltogether the method is not fit for eve.
tl;dr Too complicated, sucks, noone would understand.
A much simpler method in a case where you have the first 3 characters of the gates in the system matching is simply to spell out the fifth too... and 6th and in the end if will become comprehendable.
It shouldn't be hard for a FC to see where systems can cause confusion, and then act upon the problem and solve it, in fact I think you are a worthless FC if you cannot see problems comming, its a part of being a good FC.

Get volunteer players to do it using EVE Voice.
Of course, then one day you'll call up the proncounciation of a system name, and all you'll hear is "never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down".

More like 3k with names. The other 5-6k are just letters and numbers. Yeah, we DON'T have 40k systems in EVE, but under 10k... what a shocker.

Align to "hipp....hipff...oh god d*mit. the one that starts with an H!"
I have it on good authority that "Amamake" was the viking medical term for "anal fissure."
