EVElopedia is basically a wiki but it's all about EVE. It's something we've been working on for a while but now we're getting closer to the point where it'll be released and Fear sat down and wrote a nice blog on the process and what will happen in the future. There are some surprises in this blog but I'll let Fear tell you all about it in the blog, appropriately named EVElopedia.

Quote: One last thing, the wiki will work using the in-game browser. However, as it isą not as robust as any other browser shall we say, there can't be any edits or changes through the in-game browser. But it will render all text and images quite well, so there is no need to start your browser to search for something as you can do it through the in-game browser.

Excellent! A question though:
With the advent of this new wiki-based item database, will you simply redirect all current EVE item database links to this location? It would be very confusing having two sets of item databases that each show different data. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Who are you going to get to admin it? There will inevitably be edit wars and graffiti attacks, leading to the necessity of locking pages and banning users. Are the overworked forum moderators going to moderate the wiki as well?
Further: Quote: MediaWiki being used in most wikis today and it is my favorite Wikipedia.
There's only one Wikipedia so it's also your least favourite Wikipedia. Just saying. |

Forum moderation is handled by the Community Representatives who are part of the Community team here at CCP. As Fear writes in the blog, EVElopedia moderation will be handled by a new team called YARR, they are part of our volunteer program (ISD). I guess I could have saved a lot of time and effort by simply saying no, the people working on the forums will not be working on the EVElopedia...

Hardly. If you posted a dev blog saying "The sky is blue!" you would have:
...posters stating with much indignation that you should be assigning developers to fixing the lag problems instead of examining the sky. ...posters saying they are ****ed off that CCP is withholding information on the sky color. ...posters demanding that the sky color be returned to its previous value, as it was fine the way it was. ...posters flaming everyone that CCP knows what they are doing, and if the sky color needed to be changed, then it needed to be changed. ...posters threatening to cancel their 50 accounts due to the sky color controversy. ...posters saying "can I have your stuff?" ...and one snarky comment from Tarminic.
You can't win. Welcome to Internet forums, where people will complain about anything!

Actually it should be made policy as to which flavor if english spelling is "correct" for this wiki.
British or American english as the "offical" language of the wiki? --

EVElopedia...
You gotta be kid'n me.
Is the moderator going to be Dr. EVEl?
I can see it in local now:
Quote: "What's a good tackle setup on a velator?" "There's an EVEl on it somewhere."
Quote: "Is there a way to hit nanos with my mission-running OMG it's awesome RaVen?" "I dunno...try EVEling it."
Wouldn't Evepedia be okay?
I'm in a corp called The Funkalistic. Up until now was running with an alliance that had members like Funshine Unlimited. I read the requirements for your alliance logo designs, and couldn't help notice that the universe on your server isn't as "dark" as you think.
The very inclusion of EVEl in the name is lame.
I'm going to spell it eveLOpedia from now on. Eve-Liquid-Oxygen-pedia, where you go to get high

After reading through the blog a second time, I realized that the moderating could be a concern. Sometimes CCPs "official" position differes from reality (i.e. with regard to desync and lag), I'm wondering if the slightest mention of Desync will get an article removed from the Wiki, etc (or this post lol ) --

I would assume that any censorship/deletion would mirror what you'd find on the EVE forums. As long as you don't go around adding methods for exploiting into articles I doubt they'd be deleted.

Sounds fantastic.
Although there is something very docter evil about sitting with two monitors. One with eve and one with the item database/interwebs open.
Now if you please, could you instructed the alleged webcell to update the in testing/in development/drawing board section of your website like the good, professional game developers we know you are.
Also, theres lots of legacy content that needs looked at. Chop Chop.

This sounds GREAT! Will the auto update of the items also include an update to the database packs that the various tools use or will they have to sc**** your site? because they will sc**** the site...

Finally, a decent Eve wiki! The ones on Wikia and other places are even more out of date than the item database on this site! There will be plenty of time for retribution; I cannot wait to get its hands on these psychotic zealots whose primary form of worship apparently takes place at the altar of orbital bombardment.

Awesome, been looking forward to this for a very long time. It would be great if you can list in more detail the integration features it has now, so that we players can make suggestions for last-minute functionality.
Eg. I'm particularly interested in if it will be possible to deep-link to pages in the wiki by eg. Alliance ID, Corporation ID or Player ID, Region ID, SolarSystem ID in addition to the descriptive title.
That and the ability to display an image of any in-game item with a special wiki tag, to save gazillions of repeat uploads.

"This is going to be the most awesome thing to hit the EVE universe, and this will be available before the apocalypse, soonÖ and all that jazz!"
Good to know that I was the first to host something CCP considers to be the most awesome thing to hit the EVE Universe about four years ago :p.
Good going and looking forward to see the material CCP uses to get the MediaWiki IGB-compatible being released by CCP as open source. (because you will, right? Right!?)
I'll start thinking about a more niche-use of my own Wiki and hope the EVElopedia (brr...) will be a roaring success. I'll be sure to write some articles on it.

Edited by: iulixxi on 11/07/2008 07:29:08 Verry nice ideea about EVElopedia BUT there are some things that I believe need attention, for example:
IF EVElopedia will only work on in-game browser then it means its destinated for existing players, not for off-game documentation for lets say new "recruis".
The long-awaited item database is comming ! Yeee ! Finnaly ... BUT if the EVElopedia is available only for in-game browser we might as well check the market system ... :) no need for a new "item database", I mean the items in there are actualy the same items on the market , right ? So for off-game documentation ppl will still have to use same wiki's and sites they are using now ...
Maybe I got it whrong but from the last dev blog that's what I read.

The EVEl will work in your OOG browser, which you'll also need to use if you want to edit the EVEl.
Or to rephrase: the EVEl will *also* work in the IGB, but you cannot use the IGB to edit the EVEl.

Oke, got it !
The only phase reffering to this is
"One last thing, the wiki will work using the in-game browser. However, as it isą not as robust as any other browser shall we say, there can't be any edits or changes through the in-game browser. But it will render all text and images quite well, so there is no need to start your browser to search for something as you can do it through the in-game browser."
witch is not so clearly understood.
