That was two months ago as well... any info on the new version of the Linux client either? Or the dev blog? Anything?

Well, uh ... welcome to the Linux forums CCP Casquade and thanks for nothing I guess?
High quality content was supposed to be available Q1 2008, then we were supposed to get some info in a Dev blog ... then ... more time passes and more nothing happens.

So they just learned something now... They wont be making public statement when something is not ready.

Hummm... September already. It seems that, after two months and a half, the dev blog and the beta of the new client are still on its way.
Nevertheless I am curious: what was the real status back in June, when in theory there was only a translation and some issues pending to be completed, and what it is now? Can we expect the dev blog to be released, let's say... next week? |

Short answer: no.
Long answer: never, ever expect something from a professional (dev) doing something not strictly related to his/her own field of expertise (in this case, public relations).
Detailed answer: You shouldn't expect much even if it's strictly related to his/her own field of expertise, either, especially when it's related to software development. At least when it's related to proprietary, budget-constrained, market-drones-driven software development. |

I guess you mean professional as in "getting paid" rather than professional as in "doing a professional work".
But leaving that discussion aside, I don't think I expect much from CCP. Just to loosely stick to their word when they promise or announce something. Let's see... if you say something will be ready in a week, perhaps it will end taking two. But if you repeatedly say that it is almost finished, or just being polished, that it will be ready in a few days, and after a few months you change your statement to "at some point in the future", then it looks as if you were not previously telling the truth. Perhaps I misinterpret you but, frankly, is expecting not to be deceived beyond what we can ask for?
If this were the first time this has happened with CCP, we could simply disregard it. But it happens repeatedly again and again. Or shall I remind you that the premium version for Linux was promised for Q1 2008, and now in Q3 2008 we are told that a beta will be available at an undefined date? |

I'm rather disillusioned with the whole "professional" software development industry, please bear with me. I guess I grew tired of overhyped features promised on deadlines that are always missed by an AU. So I resort to sarcasm to protect my fragile nervous system. Whatever.
A little gem for you, in the (faint) hope that some enlightening entity will smite our devs with a massive cluebat:
Quote: Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Look, Mr. Scott, I'd love to explain everything to you. But the captain wants this spectrographic analysis done by 1300 hours.
Scotty: [thinks about it some time] You mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They want everything right now and they want it their way. But the secret is to give them only what they need, not what they want.
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Yeah. Well, I told the captain I'd have this analysis done in an hour.
Scotty: How long would it really take?
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: [annoyed] An hour!
Scotty: [looks unbelieving] Oh. You didn't tell him how long it would REALLY take, did you?
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Of course I did.
Scotty: Oh, laddie. You've got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker.

What did you expect? This is actually a pretty good example of open source (wine) succeeding where proprietary software (cedega) is failing. At least, from my point of view.

What are you bleating about? The only failure here is CCP not being able to spend 5 minutes and communicate ... nothing new

No point in posting about this really, but I feel the need to vent.
This long wait has just left me so utterly, totally disappointed... It's getting to the point where I just try to forget about the whole thing.
I've tried Eve on a Windows machine once, just to see what I'm missing, and it looks soooooo good.
Please, please, please, update us. Let us help out testing, even if it's still buggy. Or if it's off, just let us know too. I'd be a total pain, but if it's off I'd consider setting up my Eve stuff on a Windows machine.

Needless to say that I'm also quite disappointed about the progression, so I quit all of my two subscriptions. If the support gets a lot better in the future, I'm willing to reactivate one. Meanwhile I'm playing other games such as Vendetta Online, which has great native Linux support!

We are in November and there are no news about the beta of the Premium client for Linux... or the dev blog on that subject which was to be released in June.
Frankly, do any of these really exist? Because last time we heard of them they were supposed to be ready, only pending some "translation" work.

Perhaps they are too busy playing EVE with wine 1.1.7.
So fer an officially supported platform, if CCP were consultants, they'd have been fired a ways back.

by "it's on the way" you meant "it will never happen"?
seriously, WTF happened CCP? 12 months ago there was a real feeling that something was being done for linux users, a feeling of involvement. Nowadays nothing happens. Bug reports are ignored, features go missing, nobody from CCP posts in the linux forums ... did somebody pay you to stop supporting linux or something?

CCP have a lot of Microsoft stuff (they've said they use MSSQL for instance), so, if that was true, it wouldn't be unexpected.

It's possible that CCP increase delay because they see the Wine+windows version far better than there one?
Or because CCP see that everyone tell other and newcomer that Wine is far better?

Microsoft representatives was indeed at Fanfest, and there was also some outright, yet subtle, Unix/Linuxbashing from their way. ****ed me off slightly, but then again, I bash Windows so wth.
