I, for one, have strong ties to Minmatar. This is an MMORPG, and those last three letters do indeed stand for Role Playing Game. My brother was a slave for most of his life, and I spent the first several month I was a capsuleer trying to free him from the tyrannical Amarrians. I had a lead, and rescued him in late january last year. He was being transported by a blood raider captain who, upon the saving of her life, swore eternal loyalty to me. I now fight for the honor of my tribe, and to show that the republic makes the fiercest warriors in the galaxy. Coudn't say the same if I weren't minmatar now could I?

This game thrives on diversity, so being able to fly all ships with so little added costs besides the skillpoints is in my opinion not a good thing. The more diversity, the more differences there are to take advantage of.
Ofcourse it can be annoying sometimes so have the short straw sometimes when it comes to your racial ships in a certain role, but without substantial racial boundaries between ships, we're now in a situation where the entire community swings from a handful of ships to the next, 'outdating' everything else.
Separating the mob over the four races more, would mean more ships stay popular out of necessity. And people would deal with their racial sniper or logi not being the 'best', by mixing up their strategy and tweaking its role.
Sadly, this will never happen. Too many players are anxious to be able to do everything, afraid they're not min-maxed, and CCP doesn't have the backbone to enforce a measure of diversity in this game that divides homogenous groups of players. FW is their only real attempt so far, but CCP left it to wither. http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Tobiaz/sig_complaints.gif
How about fixing image-linking on the forums, CCP? I want to see signatures! |

Nope.
To do that you would have to add a line at the top about how you were an orphan rescued by Minmattar freedom fighters... |

If races limited the ship type you could fly that would completely mess things up for 2 reasons:
1) How would you know what ships you want to fly when you just started? You would be choosing to limit yourself to 1 race when you have no idea how good that race is or if you would eventually want to fly ships of another race.
2) CCP relies on cross training to give older players more things to train. If they only train 1 race, they reach end-game and get bored faster.
So that is why no racial penalty what ship you can fly. CAVEAT RICHARDUS VOLVERE - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 |

Cambarus wrote:Races were made the same because for the longest time there were 2 options: Make an achura, or make something that's not as good as an achura. The initial differences in stats, at the time the only difference between the races aside from aesthetics, was big enough that unless you wanted to avoid skill sets for things like weapons and ships, there was one clear winner and everything else was sub-par.
Plus one of the core aspects of eve is that you can crosstrain into anything and be equally effective in it, it's one of the things that separates it from other MMOs.
To be fair, pre-Bloodlines and the introduction of the asian bloodlines to appeal to the Chinese over on Serenity, picking a race did actually mean something, as did picking the background school. The stats and starting skillsets were pretty different.
CCP did make a balls up when they did Bloodlines though, the new bloodlines totally obsoleted the existing ones unless you specifically wanted a black dude with dreads and Aviators as your avatar. |

I have strong ties to Caldari. I am a traditional Caldari Calzone chef who hates how Gallente pizza has perverted Caldari cuisine. Upon saving the life of a wealthy restaurant investor, I now run "Surprise Missile Calzone Hut" in Jita for the honor of traditional Caldari Calamari Calzones. Fellow patriot.
I salute you in your honorable endeavor to protect our national heritage. I for one am appalled by the lack tradition asymmetric pizza served within our nation.

I chose Gallente for the political background (Space America) and the general cyber-punk feel that they had going on before the new avatars.
I think the new avatars were well done but I find it almost impossible to distinguish the difference between a Gallentean and Caldarian from the avatars, especially among the female avatars.
I was originally going to stick with Gallente drone boats, but I sorta drifted towards Amarr and Caldari after buying into forum bullshit (I was a newb).
I also did about 5 minutes of research before I joined the game (which race is good at what pretty much) and I loved the concept of hybrids. |
