The range is useful because in most missions 60-80% of things start more than 40km away. Having a multifreq optimal of around 37km (depending on your skills) is rather handy (specially with the large fall off of megabeams). Also means you can pop those scrambling frigs that start 70km away, rather than wait for your drones to do the work. Heres my current set-up while I train t2 large

Its not a perma run set-up but like someone has already said, perma run set-ups may make missions easier (make you feel more secure) however the mission doesnt go any faster, i find killing off ships to reduce the incoming dps so I dont need to run the LAR except every now and again much more interesting, than just switching it on and slowly picking off ships.
Armageddon: Havent personally looked at it, but I think it would be hard to get a cap stable version and the range for my point view is still quite low
Abaddon: similar sort of thing hard to get cap stable
Both could be more useful if you start on top of everything, as the higher dps and using pulses would be worth it, but still Id rather take the trusty apoc anyday
