Lag is only a subset of the events which can occur which can cause a cessation of communication. The other main item in the superset obviously being disconnects. True lag detection, which could not be fooled by futzing around with your connection and would not get confused by DCs, could be achieved if the server and client could communicate exactly what each thought was happening, such as server says your ship is on grid, client says it hasn't loaded grid yet. This could be trusted because, AFAIK, there is no way to artificially slow down the client side loading of a grid without a) disconnecting and b) screwing yourself over anyway. But, of course, this is a circular dependency anyway as lagging is by definition lack of communication. Thus, lulz. -

This!
And yes, you could slow down client side loading of the grid. Right now you would only screw yourself over by doing so, but that is only because CCP doesn't do anything to reimburse you if you have a problem with bad connectivity. Change that and there is now a reason to slow down grid load.
I agree that there could be be improvements made to grid changes: such as possibly holding you in warp/jump, on both the server and client, until the grid load is complete, but that brings along its own set of problems.
There are other more technical options that they could look at, such as using UDP instead of TCP connections, but again, trade offs must be made.
There is no instant easy solution.

Wow post a topic then go to work and find 32 replies....not bad. well unfortunately my major disagreement between server and Client is our distances appear to be different. I sho 0m they show over 2km so Thats my major beef. I can find non-monthly billed games that I could play with those types of buggs, and not have to deal with someone in tech support insult my intelligence.

I've put in two petition requests in my time. Both times I got my ships back.
Maybe if less people were being idiots and petitioning every single ship loss, then this wouldn't be a problem. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Lost a bucket full of BPOs once, lost singles a number of times before. Only reply was 'someone has them' when that could not be unless as a result of a bug since no-one but the intended keepers had access and those are both smarter than lifting armor prints when the battleship and capital schematics are right next to them.

All you would achieve by artificially slowing down grid loading would be to simulate lag. Lag is bad. What could we achieve by simulating it?
I know trusting the client is bad, but this is just one small little thing; has it loaded the environment or not. Even being able to make the client lie offers no real advantages that I can see. -

If CCP changes their policy to allow reimbursements for "network" lag, people can generate it on demand for reimbursements when they expect trouble.

…except, of course, that none of that ensures that you will not have any problems on your end, or along the way to the server.

I know this thread is mostly about ships lost to lag. But I wanted to stick my head in and say that I lost 50+ trit bars to the market about 3 weeks ago. I put in a petition asking what had happened. Less then 24 hours later I have the triat bars back in my hanger with an explanation of what had happened. I can not remember what it was at this point, but the problem was fixed a heck of alot faster then I would have hoped for reading what I do on the forums about reimbursement petitions.

Originally by: James Mathews I wish I was that smart with comps. All my occurances have been "Session change now in Progress". That equals death for me apparently.
well that sucks for you, if you keep getting "session change in progress" then you either need to get a faster connection, or clear your cache, because i got a "session change in progress" a while ago to, i petitioned for stuck player, they told me that i had to clear my cache, so do that
to clear cache, press escape "reset settings" and click the "clear cache" button
dont do it in the middle of a battle and then come here and whine on the forums because you got popped trying to clear your cache
hope this helped
EDIT: also clearing the cache has helped w/ game speed tremendously, like for example before i cleared the cache, on my home base in oursulaert, station 3, where there are tons of lights moving around on the screen at the same time, it took me 30 seconds to open one of the containers i keep to keep everything tidy, now it takes about only 5-10 seconds, so clear out your cache frequently to keep your connection speed up high

The whole point of the exercise is to prevent losses due to lag by detecting it and preventing you from appearing on grid until it loads. If you artificially generate lag, all you would achieve would be to stay off grid for longer. CCP would not have any reason to change their reimbursement policy, as losses due to lag would be prevented. -

I have had no problem with reimbursment....matter of fact couple years ago....I had a Megathron named Flying Dutchman...Damn thing kept comming back...lost it, CCP gave it back....sold it...it came back...lost in PvP and it came back...sold it...it came back. I petitioned the ghost ship and was told "Records dont show us you should'nt have it, so Merry Christmas!" And by the way..."Session change in progress" is lag...and CCP is not responsible for lag in anyway shape or form...read the EULA.
Damn you CCP! Why did you have to make such a good game?? Yes you drew me back AGAIN! Oh well wheres the Omber? |
