Romania, around 4.4 to 4.6 RON per liter nowadays (about same price both for gasoline and diesel fuel) So, roughly around 2 USD per liter, or around 7.6 USD per gallon (more like 7.4 to 7.8 USD, but you get the idea).

HOWEVER, "regular" cars around here use between 4 to 6 liters per 100 km, so let's say 40 to 60 miles per gallon. So, you end up with a gas price (rounding to 8$/gallon and 50 mpg) of about 0.16 USD per mile on average (down to, say, 0.12 USD/mile if you're lucky and drive a slightly more economic car in a slightly cheaper area). How much does it cost per mile for wherever YOU live ?

Gas here in DC is about $4.35 per gallon, my wife's care gets between 35 and 40 MPG. SO 8-10 cents per gallon...not too bad really. Whenever I see one of those terrible hummer monstrosities driving through the city I just laugh now, because they're paying more in gas than it would cost to rent a normal car. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

A side effect is that we also have some of the least fuel efficient cars, which until the past 8 years wasn't an issue since gas was $1-2 a gallon, and we generally commute to work more than Europeans. As a percentage of income, Americans and Europeans are impacted equally by high gas prices.

More than that, from what I've seen all over the place. There was one station in Cornwall that set prices to what works out as $18/gallon during a recent tanker drivers' strike.

I commute 75 miles a day round trip, I would say that is slightly above average, but it's not extremely high. House prices in the UK mean a lot of folk have to live far from their work just to be able to afford a mortgage.
Public transport? Unless you live in London or live in a city and commute to another city, forget using public transport to commute.
I bought a diesel car to try and save money on fuel, but diesel seems to have rocketed out of proportion in the last year or so.

Prices vary a bit around the country and my local prices are a little higher, but unless you are quoting some strange colonial pound , (by your conversion rates) ú5.14 is infact US$10.20 and EU 6.56.
Also lets not forget that if you drive a diesel car instead of a petrol car you will be paying about 10% more for your fuel per gallon easily pushing the price over $11 a gallon.
Either way round I would like to see if anyone on these forums can beat that

UK here, drive 70 mile round trip to work every day. I am now doing something I've never done before and stick to the speed limit of 70mph on the motorway to enhance fuel efficiency. I am averaging 40mpg.
So, if I do 70 miles a day, that's 1.75 gallons or 7.9 litres (call it 8). 8 litres times 115 pence (per litre for unleaded) is ú9.20 a day commuting I really envy those people who can walk or cycle to work. So for 1 gallon it is 3.7x2.45= alittle over 9 dollars for a gallon here in Norway.

I just checked google and 13.04sek is 1.385euros. That is cheaper then Germany, last I checked it's 1.489euros per litre.
1 gallon = 3.785 litre 1 gallon = 5.635 euros 1 gallon = 8.791 USD in Germany (1 USD = 0.641 euro)

8$ / gallon here.
My Celica does about 25-28 mpg urban (8.4L/100km), so it comes to about 28 cents per mile. (Extraurban is at 36-37 MPG (6.4/100km), so that's 21 cents per mile).
My workplace is about 1 km from my home though, so if the weather is nice, I just take a 10-15 minute walk.

Heh, I got a similar effect by doing the opposite.
Didn't expect that out of my POS Audi (I love her, but she ain't pretty), but I get better mileage at 125-130 kph (77.7-80.8 mph) than at the carebear speed limit of 110 kph (68.4 mph), and it also runs much more smoothly.
Dad attended some "eco driving" BS at work a while back, and while generally being perfectly obvious and sensible stuff (engine brake, accelerate quickly, skip gears etc) the booklet he got said that all cars run better at 90kph than 110. Blanket statements like that make me furious as it's highly dependent on the car. Luckily even dad saw through that one, cheapskate as he is he's measured optimal speeds for all cars he's ever owned.

That probably just means, that with that extra speed, the engine gets to an optimal RPM.
Perhaps you were driving in too high gear before, when you should have used a gear lower with your particular car?

Being in the UK I'm paying about $8.40 a gallon. We're used to it here. A country of Exxon's prison b*tches.
That and the fact anyone lucky enough to buy a brand new car has to pay a "showroom tax" which can be an extra $5000, and be subjected to the new "green initiative" tax bands, whereas my 4.6L V8 costs $355 a year, someone buying a new car with a similar "gas guzzling" powerplant will be looking at a yearly tax cost of around $1000. Every Year.
My car costs me, at the moment.. $118 to fill, I get a good 160 miles on a full tank.
Its a 20 mile round trip for me to drive to work, however I catch the train and cycle 6 miles a day. Yet the train, per month, costs me $160. Thats probably over $300 cheaper than using my car.
Can't really win at the end of the day. Keep an eye out for the electric car I guess, but I don't think we'll get a cheap efficient electric car in the UK any time soon considering most of our fuel is tax and duty.
That money has to come from somewhere since our Government ****ed up the economy royally, probably get taxed to shit on "electric miles" or something.

Petrol is 1.13 where i live.
1.13 x 3.78541178 = ú4.28 per gallon (rounded up) = US$8.38
Even at 1.18 x 3.78541178 = ú4.47 per gallon (rounded up) = US$8.75
What gallon are you talking about? US Gallon, as above is roughly 3.79 liters and a UK Gallon is 4.55 liters. By your figures you're using around 5.5 liters to a gallon
Edit: Just noticed you're talking about diesel which would work out at just under a fiver per US Gallon which is still less than US$10

My sentiments exactly. If that's the Americans idea of feeling the pinch, I wish UK would also feel the pinch as cheaply as that.

Now now, lets not blame him for being ignorant of how the rest of the world is dealing with the recession.
I would however be curious to see what he would do living over here, I recall the hilarity of US Americans panicking when the dollar was plummeting to make an ice cream cone $5 in centeral London
Bring on the Euro!

Yes, I checked what a US Gallon was and used that to calculate up.
Well consider the US is in an economic ressession at the moment so we are generally feeling the pinch.
As is everyone else to varying degrees, the US having one of the cheapest prices on the planet and complains about it the most
its because we've had it cheap for so long, and then prices spike up unexpectantly, you guys have had expensive gas for like ever, so you built ways around it, IE, extremely fuel efficient cars, we here in the US, have had cheap gas for like ever, and so we built really big cars/ trucks/ SUV's that uh, arent the most fuel efficient, and then prices for gas practically double in like 5 years, THATS what hits us so hard, so our only way around it is to either bear the gas prices or go and BUY a much more fuel efficient car, which since they arent the most common in the US, are hard to find, and can be expensive,
i bet it would hit you really hard to if prices for gas spiked from $8 - $16/ gallon, in fact i konw you guys would also complain
and its also a bit easier on you guys as well, if you want to go somewhere else, its not nearly as far as a travel, like you want to visit london, so you have to go like 500 miles west, now lets say i lived in New York and wanted to go to L.A. thats like 1500miles, so either i take a plane, or spend hundreds in gas, Europe is much smaller than America, you guys dont have to travel nearly as much distance wise

I was just about to say this. 12.80 is kind of cheap almost.

It's all about attitude. If you don't like the prices of the cars that are cheaper to run, don't buy them. On the other hand, don't complain when your fuel bills are high because you drive a gas guzzler. You think too short term, a fuel efficient car is expensive but you will recoup that cost in savings on fuel. Think longer term and you will soon see the benefits of shelling out that few extra bucks on a car.

It wasn't long ago that 75p a litre was the norm. It's spiked to well over a pound a litre in less than two years. But brits are weeners who can't seem to organise a group action against the gov't to protest about the ludicrous tax we pay. Hence, the gov't just add more and more, making it almost impossible to earn a liveable wage here.

It really makes me laugh when Americans say that. They complain that the distance means they use so much fuel and then drive gas guzzlers that do somewhere around 15 to the gallon, making it cost even more. By rights, this should be the other way around, you should be driving the more economical cars since you have longer distances to travel and we whould be driving the gas guzzlers because our distances are nowhere near as much.
I recently travelled 625 miles from Kent to Aberdeenshire in my 1900 Purgeot 405 (non-turbo) diesel and it cost 50 quid in fuel, (was 1 pound a litre then so 50 litres), half of what it cost me to do the same trip in a 1600 Nissan Bluebird petrol engine and probably around 1/10th of what it would have cost in a 5 litre petrol engine American car.

Edited by: mamolian on 03/08/2008 04:44:34 Until very recently.. I drove around 160 miles a day in my 1.4 turbo diesel Volkswagen Polo.. I would get about 500 - 525 miles out of my 40 litre (10 gallon full tank) 50 - 53 miles per gallon :) Not bad really. But.. I had to fill up my car every 3 days :P at Ç0.98 - Ç1.40 a litre.. Pretty much works out around $85 for 10 gallons every 3 days ..
So all you ****in yanks crying about gas prices.. can suck the exhaust pipe while i rev the shit out of the engine. -----------
