So that there is no confusion, this is not a whine nor a rant post about getting caught at a gate camp, this is an informational posting for this forum as I have heard that you people want to know about pirates that do not honor ransoms.
Late last night, I was running my hauler from Otou to Hek and back, moving trade goods. I happened upon a gate camp in Otou on the Hek gate. Mafiosos was there and they caught me with their HIC fair and square.
I know the drill, they stop you, hit you hard and they ransom you. It's how the game is played.
So, when they start shooting me, I announce in local that I surrendered and stop my ship.
Their HIC pilot, Lumari, convoed me. He said that I had to pay 15 mil to be let go. I asked the usual, "Will I be let go to travel safely?" I was told that I would be allowed to return to Hek without incident. Happily, I paid him. He said thank you and ended the convo and I was no longer warp scrammed.
Now, I know how this is supposed to work. You take a chance in low sec, you risk getting caught at a gate camp. I know this very well and I am happy to pay ransoms to be let free. It's part of the game, it's how things are and that is fine by me.
I've been ransomed before in Otou. I've been on the wrong end of a United or Neo Spartan gate camp. Those guys stop you too, but at least they honor their ransoms. They don't try to kill you after they get your money.
So, having paid the ransom to Lumari, I continued to the Hek gate as agreed. Suddenly, He and his fellow corp mates, in a Drake and a Brutix, opened fire on my ship. Lucky for me, I was close enough to jump through the gate with a little structure left.
I am not complaining that I got caught at a gate camp, it happens and you deal with it. I am complaining about Mafiosos corp as they did not honor the arrangement for which they were paid.
I am not asking for anyone to attack them, nor am I trying to smack talk them here. I am merely pointing out that they do not honor their ransoms.
So, if you are caught in a gate camp in Otou and it's the Mafiosos that caught you, do not pay them. They will not keep their word. As for the other pirates in that pocket, it would be safe to say that if you encounter them, they will at least act with honor.

Why would anybody ever honour a ransom anymore?
Eve videos now show dishonouring ransoms, and the fanbois are on board with how awesome! dishonouring ransoms is now.
It's just the natural slide of eve, don't sweat it, and don't pay again, it's all over for ransoms. |

Because you can make more money on ransom than loot left in wreckage, which by Murphy's law will always be crap loot anyways.

You know, I don't have a problem with paying ransoms or pirates in EVE. They play an important role in the game, providing that risk for the reward of successfully traveling in low sec or null sec space. It's yet another game dynamic that makes it that much more fun than other games. I like that kind of danger, makes it more interesting.
As for not paying ransoms, well to be honest, if you take the risk, it's really a second chance to get out safe. Whether or not you are going to be ransomed really depends on the pirate I would guess. Some pirates won't ransom a frigate, not a chance for a lot of money there, but a hauler, heck yeah. I've been stopped and told I could go free, I had to jettison my cargo.
To me, that really adds a level of realism to the game, real priates stealing my stuff at gun point.
What's so bad about that?

You know, that's not a bad idea. Maybe a central list for everyone to be able to look at. A Black List of dishonorable pirates. Yeah, that's a great idea.

That would be a great resource, and would actually give some value to honouring ransoms.

Obvious troll is obvious.
Trying offering to pay a ransom, you would be surprised how many pirates will stop shooting and take the isk rather than waste the ammo on your sorry butt.

Just cause a few corps dont honor ransoms dosent mean all dont. i ransom as much as i can and honor it and so does my whole corp. But if we just want kb kills we dont even convo. We just kill
But i agree to the name and shame of corps/alliances/capsuleers that dont because ransoms are good for the ransomer and the ransomee

This.
I actually paid a guy in a Itty Mk 4 cause he was offering a ransom in local... but my raven had already loosed a volley of torps on his hide. They one volleyed him, so I threw him about 10 mil for not being a whiner about it (I think we ended up with decent loot from that one, so it all worked out).

Oops moments are a big no, no. If that's what happened here, it must have been a big oops. Look at the OP. The one doing the ransom, Lumari and his corp mates fired on him. It was not an anxious gang member, it was the "leader" so to speak that fired.
Yeah, Lumari needs to give back that ransom.

This is either a massive misunderstanding or an outright lie.
I was there, the HIC pilot scrambled you but had no web. Me (in the Brutix) and a friend (Drake) were in warp to you when we learned that Lum had no web. Lumari was trying to ransom you but never got the chance, as you MWD'd back to the gate before we could tie you down. As far as I know (I cannot speak for Lumari) no ransom took place, as the entire ordeal consisted of you simply running back to the gate and jumping. You also jumped out before either me or the Drake even locked you, so no, we did *not* open fire on you.
It is also worth noting that the credibility of your argument is severely weakened by several factors:
1.) You typed: "Isurrender" in local, a typo, and then somehow managed to type complex and coherent sentences in a private conversation, in a situation of extreme tension. 2.) You have no screenshots of the incident. 3.) Our scout in Hek saw you run back into Hek and start screaming about a gatecamp in Otou. Why you chose not to include that we "don't honor ransoms" there instead of the forums, I cannot say. 4.) We ransom solely in a pre-established channel, NOT in a private conversation window. The channel name is 'Gorditas'. 5.) Speaking of the ransom, a 15 million ransom for a Viator(?). That is pathetic. Why anyone would ransom a mere 15 million for a Tech 2 industrial ship from a known faction loot salesman is beyond me. I have ransomed pods for more than that.
So I'm sorry, but that conversation appears to be fabricated.
http://mafiosos.griefwatch.net/?p=kills
Here is a link to our KB, if you really care send an EVEMail to one of the podmails on the killboard for confirmation. One of them (I'm not sure why..) we tried to ransom for 40 million, assuming he had implants. I think his name was Deepspace Diver, I'm not sure. You can tell me why in hell we would try to ransom a transport ship for less than half of what we ransom a pod for. I'm waiting.
Honestly, you should be happy that you got away. Don't try to come to the forums with this shit to try and ruin our fun because you're mad that you couldn't haul your stuff into low sec without a scout, and had to wait a few hours until the gate was clear again.

I can type over 130 on a good day and even I can't touch 1 second with that blob of text.
3 seconds is pushing it, and he'd have to have totally thought out the entire sentence beforehand. Other than that, seriously? Guy's getting scrammed and he frantically types full words in 100% proper english with good punctuation and capitalization?
Shenanigans. Plain and simple. I don't know about the rest of his corp, but I've known DJ for a good long time. He would never go back on a ransom and he would especially never lie about it. |

Sorry, I didn't imply that he could do that in 1 second, just that it was possible the conversation started in local and went on in the convo window.
But based on other stuff being discussed here, seems like there may be something deeper at work. I wasn't taking any position on the veracity of the OP's claims. :)

That does speak well for them for what they have done in the past anyways. Let's hope they stick to that course of action.

I re-read the OP post. He's not talking smack. He seems to be pretty level headed and honest about what happened. He stated that he did make it out safe, but only after he was attacked and badly damaged.
As you say, you and the other pilot did not fire on him. Is it possible that your corp mate, Lumari, acted on his own here? Using a private convo (since neither of you were there at the time) he may have been trying to get some isk and cut you guys out.
Just a thought.
There are no chatlogs from Lumari, every ransom we do takes place in a channel called 'Gorditas'. We don't use private conversation windows to ransom people. Not any more, at least. I'll have to wait for Lumari's opinion on this. I can't tell you if he did suddenly decide to open up a conversation window and ransom a Viator for a pitiful 15 million, using perfect english grammar. I also can't tell you why the Viator bothered to ask Lumari 'If he received the 15 million' even though he was 0 km from the gate and jumping out within the same 1 second window.

Quoting the original chatlog to prevent a ninja-edit.
