Objects to warp to, objects for stations/moons to orbit. That's it.
...as of yet

This.
No, they aren't good for anything else but for warping to 100 when running away. (warp to a moon and risk getting blown up by a POS if outside highsec)

They're balls of rock with atmosphere. People live on some. Many provide something for moons to orbit around. You can warp to them.
Do you think everything that doesn't have game-play purpose shouldn't exist? I guess the graphics could be changed to abstract colored 3D shapes flying around a completely black background, but that'd be lame.

Maybe he was just asking cause he didn't know if they could be mined ect. Did he say they shouldn't exist? Stop being an a$$hole and breaking peoples balls for no reason, stupid troll.
To answer the OP, not much. Planets are only good for anchoring stations (player built outposts, in 0.0 w/sov). Other than that a warp to spot is all it is.

Planets aren't really good for much. We ought to live on orbitals instead.

i found a number of people believe planets (and the sun more so) to be excellent safespots that no one thinks of checking

Planets are there because, well, it's space, and space has planets. Also they are nice backdrops, as well as used to set up probes for finding exploration sites.
Furthermore, your question is kinda pointless. Let me illustrate why.
What is the point of rocks, trees and bushes in fantasy MMO games? I mean, they serve no purpose, so why not just remove them all?
See what I did there?

I know this is trivial and in no way an answer to the original question, but there is only one Sun and thus those are stars in each system not Sun's.
These kind of things bug me.. so sue me!

all anomolys and exploration sites appear 4 au from a planet and for the most part missions also. So if your scanning this is valueble knoledge.

There's only two things directly tied to planets that I know of. First, all exploration sites spawn within 4 AU of a planet (so they naturally are places to put your Quests as well), and second you can only construct an outpost in 0.0 at a planet.
While the planet itself may be nothing more than a backdrop, the warp-in point for it has a variety of uses...
- When traveling through hostile 0.0, it's common practice to warp to a planet near the gate you're going through so you can scan it and see if it's bubbled.
- They're good spots to recon belts from, since belts are always near planets and it's much faster to scan them with the onboard scanner than actually warp to them (and also reduces the chances that a ratter may notice you until it's too late)
- They're good on-grid meeting spots for you and your buddies. Nobody goes to a planet unless they have reason to so you're less likely to be disturbed.

Maybe...just maybe, we might get planetary interaction some day. Things like economies on the planets that you feed NPC goods to in return for Taxes.
They also might be part of the future reorganization of 0.0 Soverignty mechanics.

planets are also apparently good sites to find complexes as well and simply with your on board scanner
its kinda annoying really, lmao, a few noob corp members have been finding freaking FACTION modules in high sec complexes by warping to a planet and scanning
