I like to think that the money (isk) is different from what normies use. I mean, we can buy a spaceship for 30,000.00 isk. That's a pretty powerful bill. What does .01 isk get you groundside?
So just maybe we ARE paying our limited crews, but we just are so used to making huge amounts of money that it's not even a noticeable percentage of our wallets.

The reason the ships have windows is because the ships were retrofitted to be suitable for capsules. Original designs were for crews, not one-man pods. ----

Really good question. I think CCP has partially answered this one in previous posts. IIRC, they have it somewhere on the slate to get around to. All ships have crews except fighters and I think 1 of the Minmatar Frigates.
Here's what I'd like to see: Crews must be hired. Good crews cost much more and increase the efficiency of a ship. The longer you go without destroying the ship, the better they get and the better the loyalty to you, the pod pilot. Crew contracts can be sold. Crew caliber would be ranked much like a module. A crew member that has x number of kills assigned to him/her is Meta Level x and so on, and worth whatever the market says.
Yeah, I don't have this all worked out. Something I sit and chew on it at times. I just think it would add life to the game. Obviously you can't "hire" 10,000 crewmembers for a Battleship. You could however, say that there are 5 positions on a ship that must be filled, Chief Gunnery, Chief Mechanic, etc. The crews would then fall under their respective chief.
So, if I've had my Retribution for 8 months and splashed thousands of rats, the crew would be pretty good and loyal to the pilot. If I'm a cheesy ganker that looses ships right and left, crews are expensive and hard to find and of low quality. Humm, mutiny comes to mind for a careless pod pilot..........
Just some thoughts.

I think that crews would be interesting, actually. And yes, pod-capable ships do still have crews, I don't know who keeps perpetuating this myth that they don't but it's not true. Ships piloted by pod pilots have no crews. Pod pilot ships are specially constructed so that all ship systems are fully automated and the pod acts as the central controller. This was the basis of the Jovian pod design to make ships more efficient (and spare human life). The only crews used by pod pilots are in station, which is supplied by the station owners as part of their services - which you pay for indirectly via taxes and fees to the relevant station owners. The same ships piloted by non-pod pilots still require a full crew - normally those used by the standard navies.
In short, if you have not noticed, you control every part and piece of the ship. The only entity you have contact with is the ship computer, never with any crew. Crew is not required and will just stand in the way of full control.
Except Minmatar ships, where the crew consists of a bunch of mechanics with rolls of ducttape, continously patching stuff. |

This is not correct. All ships have crews, even those controlled by pod pilots. Check your back story and do a search of the forums. CCP has specifically stated that they have crews. Also, older T1 ships have been retrofitted for pods. T2 ships have apparently been specifically constructed for pods. IIRC, Battleships and above still have thousands of crew members and are only controlled by the pod pilot.

I've often wondered that very thing. I think there's a bit of cognitive dissonance going on with the pod pilot idea once you get beyond smaller frigate like ships. Maybe the pod thing will be expanded to include multiple pod pilots in your ship? That'd make much more sense since one pilot can hardly be expected to be able to manage a huge titan all on his/her own.

This is where the confusion comes from as many people think that it gets rid of them entirely. Some of those chronicles are surprizing though. I thought only the poor and impoverished were desprite enough to work on a vessel because it was considered suicide.
Also the reason you don't have to pay your crew is because most worlds don't use the isk. Isk is the increadibly strong and elite currency. 1 isk is worth a fortune compared to normal currencies. Basically the crews work for such little that the pod pilots don't even notice the cost in the end. Just the cost of 1 vessel completely dwarfs the cost of operating the crews. _______________

From what I've read, Amarr have superior reactors because they're almost completely unshielded, so working around them for any length of time invariably leads to death by radiation poisoning. Could be fun, but would probably need to be restricted to PvP battles. Otherwise, it would either be too easy just to grind rats, or so boring that no-one would bother doing it except pure mission runners (and then they'd have another risk-free source of income, which they don't need).

I'm not really sure why this debate ever comes up. There's no solid evidence to support the theory of ships to having crews. The only exception is mentioned in Wetgrave, and that's just the Jove telling them a frigate could go on just the pod. There's only PF supporting pod-only for frigates, and even then, it never states that all frigates don't use crews, just that the frigates mentioned have no mention of any crew*.

the crews aren't paid cause your basically their 'god'.
pods arent a new thing, but are new to humans and are designed by the jovians. only the elite of humans can use a pod because of the HUGE mental requirements of controlling a ship. the main things the crews are for- ship maint reloading weapons storage cleaning windows taking out the trash building the jet cans polishing the drones piloting fighters engine maint. (someones gotta change the oil) moving stuff from wrecks/cans freezing the corpses some of us pick up to collect (lol)

I pilot only the latest generations of starships, fitted with the latest technology. All systems are fully automated and integrated into my direct control. I have no need for human crews, nor do I want any. They are inefficient, make mistakes, waste oxygen. When I want to shoot something, I do not want to wait until a gunner gets of the toilet to go and fumble with his levers. When I get shot at I do not want to wait for a mechanic to herd his nanobots down the access tubes, I need instant repair.
In my line of work as mercenary, I have no scope for failure. According to my statistics I do not seem to fail, in fact I have a very high efficiency. I can accept that other pilots like sitting in their command centers and shout orders at crew/slaves, but then accept that anything needs done will take time.
Another point of view is not disinformation. |

Ok, I have to be quick, I start work in a few minutes... Ships have crews. I took the trouble of finding the thread in which CCP stated that most ships (except most frigate class ships) have crews.
Link.
CCP's response is 1/3 of the way down page 2.
Ships have crews, but you don't see any stats as to how many, nor do they play any part in the efficentcy of your ship. It would be nice if they did, but then you have to wonder where all those 0.0 alliances would get their crews from, as far as I know, the vast majority of the systems in 0.0 are unsettled.
Though this would add a new element of strategy and roleplay to the game (intercepting crew transports and recruiting/enslaving crews for ships, etc), the implimentation would be difficults and alliances deep in 0.0 would be very hard pressed to maintain their hold on their territory if they have entirely abandoned empire in favour of 0.0.
Got to go, work about to start! :S Fly safe.

I agree, having populations as a resource would add new depth to the game. You take an unihabited system, you there terraform a planet, and then get settlers (transport escort anyone?) to land, and out of that, you get recruits.
Obviously, the larger the population, the more recruits you can get. Then there is the whole training and re-training (in the case of prisoners) aspect. Those this might turn EVE ONLINE into CIV ONLINE.
If large poulation planets are in other locations, away from the main resource areas, then it would make controlling those locations of vital importance, on par with the most mineral rich areas. What good is being able to build a fleet of battleships when you don't have the crew to man them?
Though again, alliances without access to population centres would be limited to frigate sized vessels, which would quickly lose their territory to a blob.
It's a great idea with huge RP potential, and I hope CCP impliment it at some point, but doing so would be difficult, as well as adding crew stats to almost every ship, you'd need ways to monitor the population, ship in food and supplies to a budding colony, etc, etc.

There would be a great deal for race variation if this was implimented. For example, Amarr could use either Amarrians as crews via recruitment or slaves for a cheaper source of crewmen, Minmatar could get a lot of volunteers due to motivations vs Amarr, Caldari could contract people in, etc, etc.
Also, crews would bring the question of various types of crewmen. Unless they go for the simplified "crew" to be on the ships, they can have "science teams" "engineering crews" "security detail" that can give bonuses or penalties depending on crew compliment and make-up.
It would also potentially give Marines and Militants a useful role in ship combat. A ship with lots of engineering teams and a very good guncrew may be able to tank like a beast and deal out huge damage, but it would be very vulnerable to a boarding action if it does not have security teams. (maybe not take over a ship but start giving it random penalties for stuff like ROF or armour/shield rep as the troops attack the guncrews/engineers untill security can put down the intruders)
Lots of people have suggested this as a possible upgrade to assault ships and I agree, being able to deliver teams of shock troops to a target ship could be a very valuable role.
The problem with this is that no only are you introducing a new statistic for ship construction, but also introducing a large amount of micro-management ("if I swap out this security team and add more engineers, I should be able to tank better" etc etc) which would put all sorts of strain on both pilots and the server.
Might be an idea to just stick to "crew" :)

I always wanted there to be a skill level in crews. Say after a while if you fly around doing missions, pvping or whatever, your crew skill gradually rises improving the capability of your ship if it survives of course.
Maybe crews start at noob level -1% all major component type skills (or something) after a few days, they become standard (+0%), then gradually rise upto maybe "elite" which gives +5%
Or perhaps you could buy crews that are uber already from LP stores or get given them as rewards. Who knows!

a) I doubt those huge guns are reloaded by hand, and if they are reloaded by machine it could be and would be automated.
b) I would think that any action we directly control in the game is an action which does not require crew action, since we are neurally linked to the parts we control. -

I would like to see crew that you pay in the game as well. Altough i don't think they should add any bonuses to the ship but instead you get 0 ship bonuses if you fly with less than full crew.
If you don't have any you wont be able to undock. The crew is basically loaded like a drone into a dronebay and stay there until you move them to another ship, your hangar or dismiss them. Crew can be found in every station if you need more and they take up 2 m¦. Slaves don't get paid but they do need to eat and injected with expensive Vitoc so Amarr pay as much as everybody else (or they only need 75% of normal crew since they are worked to the bones, but then you must make sure you don't fly into Minmatar territory AND you have to provide the Vitoc).
Here's a little though to give you a perspective on your wealth as a pod pilot.
Avarage EVE-Joe on a planet, with an avarage job, earn 10 isk per day (roughly 100 Euro). 70% goes to living cost, such as food, rent etc. He works around 220 days and thus save 660 isk/year. A crewmember on a ship earns 100 per day due to the risks involved. (how many ships have you lost the last couple of months?) The crewmember unlike EVE-Joe, sign a contract witha pod pilot and might not get much leave while the ship is in dock i.e. he wont be spending much since the ship is his home. He will have earned a lot more than EVE-Joe (36500 isk for a one year contract) once the contract is up, if he's still alive that is. Maybe if he survives a few contract years he himslef can afford pod training.
Back to game.
I'd say a frigate, depending on size need 0-5 crew members. A Rifter require a crew of five so every downtime 500 isk is deducted from your wallet. A cruiser have around 50 crew members, a Battlecruiser perhaps 250 and so on. If you want ALL your ships to be battle ready then you must also pay the rent for it. Now lets talk about Titans... How many crew members does it take to keep a ship, with mass enough to mess up a planet tide, top notch for any combat situation? 500000 - 1000000 maybe? More? I doubt its any problem for a titan pilot to pay the crew 350 - 700 mil isk per week but the pay and the logistics involved might be enough, as Uncle Mo said to slow down the growing titan blobs. And maybe even blobs in general.

I have to disagree with you there I'm afraid. People still go into pvp with very expensive t2 ships and equipment, meaning they are risking a huge amount of isk.
If you have a veteran crew, then it's no different then putting faction gear on your ship, you take the risk. If you don't like it, replace it with cheaper, standard gear. And unlike t1/t2/faction gear, crews would become better with use, so I guess you can maybe spend some time ratting/missioning and train them up (or several crews in fact), before taking them into a big battle.
Also, there is the whole issue with escape pods. If your ship is going down, the crew are not going to hang around (unless you are especially cruel and decide not to have them abandon ship). Even if your crew are captured after abandoning ship (either in the wreck inside unbreached compartments, or in space in jetcans?), they wouldn't be any use to your killer, as they will be prisoners, and would need "re-training" to be useable by the new "owner".

Eshud Uktar's idea is interesting, paying the crew would add a RP element, but I think the number of crew is underestimated. In the EVE chronicle Hands of a Killer, it was reported that over 6000 hands were lost on the battleship, with the daily pay at 100isk each, that would push the cost of a battleship up to 600k a DAY.
This would push newer players and the casual gamers out of the game. Say someone goes on holiday for 2 weeks, you would have them lose 600k a day for crew bills? That is 8.4million isk he's lost just by going on holiday. It would remove the "RL friendly" aspect of EVE.
Say you have a missioning battleship and a pvp battleship... 16.8million. A lot of players take long breaks for whatever reason, and a lot of people have a fair few ships, this would bleed them dry is a couple of weeks. I think a one-off hire would be better, or even a contract-type hire. Insurance lasts 12 weeks, what about the same for ship crew hire?
Skirmish pvp would be relatively unaffected however, as the Dev's say most frigates do not have crews, just the pod pilot.

Actually it would just push out people who want to own loads of battleships but never actually play the game out of the game.
Since crews are basically biomass you could have the crews pulled from whomever is on the station at the time you undock, thus only incurring costs on the days the ship is actually used. -

What about jump clones? I personally have a couple of clones a long way apart, and I have ships at both locations, this would mean paying twice as much to be able to pilot a ship at the other location when I clone jump.
Also, ships have different crew sizes, so you can't just pull your crew from one ship and put them in another, a cruiser sized ship compliment will not be able to handle the needs of a battleship properly, and a battleship crew is far too large to fit in a cruiser. You would be forced to split your crews (which adds even more micro-management).

Yes, but 100ISK a day would be insanely high. As someone mentioned, you can buy an entire frekking spaceship for a paltry 30k, which with those pay grades would then be the equivalent of one yearly gross income. And that's for a combat frigate – the same mop pusher would be able to buy his own space shuttle every three months.
Put another way: it's rather unlikely that the crewmembers would be payed that much.
Also, see this thread for a currency analysis. Somewhere around 0.1 ISK per day per person for a good crew seems far more likely.

If you know that you're going away for an extended period of time you simply dismiss your crew (trash this item) so as long as you don't forget the crew in that ship in that hangar somewhere there shouldn't be a problem.
I was thinking more in the line of 1000 souls (+1) on a tier 1 battleship, 6000 as in the novel... well sure why not, let's say that one is a tier 3.
You can pull crews from one ship to another. So if you have two tier 3 battleships (and other smaller ships) at two different locations then you buy two set of ship crews and use them for all your ships. You can only use one ship at any given time anyway.
If you don't plan to visit one location use your jump clone and dismiss your crew at that location. You can always hire more later on.
600000 per day for a battleship is not much at all imo. I make around 20 mil per hour doing a lvl 4 mission. If you can't afford the ship price but also maintenance, then should you really be flying it at that point. Why not wait a little and save up some isk.
In regard to this thread.
I was using gallentean planetary vehicles and planetary vehicles when i was thinking about valid wages.
I must say that 2500 kg with the size of 0.2 m¦ is a very dense product.

Depends on which level you would have to manage your crew, it should be sorta like ammo, 300 engineers, 100 officers, 60 navigators, 100 gunners, 40 comm. experts, 70 mechanics and with the different levels.
A crew would only be manageable while docked. It would be like flying around with lots of different ammunition loaded that gives bonuses, not sure how much lag that would add.

With that model, it would be calculated on "fitting" the crew and would then cause as much lag as any other passive mod. I.e. none.

Crews would probably be paid a fraction of any bounties on things that the capsuleer destroys.
The ship's purser and quartermaster probably also conspire with the station brokers to skim isk from every transaction that the capsuleer makes.
Why not just make a modification of the existing BPOs and things? So, you need a "gallente frigate crew" to build a frigate, and so forth. For the faction ships, you'd need e.g. a "Serpentis cruiser crew". Crews would be made up from the different types of people, using a blueprint. So e.g. 200 exotic dancers, 300 marines, 250 technicians and 250 sailors make up a Gallente battlecruiser crew. faction crews could be made up with people retrieved from npc wrecks, or from the faction lp stores.
Put the sources of people in lowsec, then there's a reason to go there.
The only thing then, is what crews should actually do ingame. Having more bonuses would make any balance issues worse, and also become another requirement that people think you need to have before having any fun. But if they do nothing much, then they're irrelevant and a waste of programming time.
Maybe some kind of crew management skill (Charisma based! take that Achura!), to tweak the ship skill bonuses. But no "5% to X" things, that would be too much.

Edited by: Takima Templar on 01/08/2008 15:12:28 A friend of mine told me in the upcoming Star Trek online game, people can select their own crew.
Now I wouldn't mind if that would also be implemented in EVE. Maybe you could actualy specialise in training crew-members, having training facility's etc. For example you could have a 'master engineer'and his 100 crew who would give +1% speed or whatever. It could be an additional economic aspect of the game. Imo the more you can do/choices you have in a game the better. Abit the same like the post above me.

I'd love to see the crew selection menu like in that startrek game, one for navigation, other for security third is an engineer and takes care of reactor and warp drive! and how slowly they level up! woot! It would be nice to leave control for defense maneuvers to npc crew so i can deal with targets or watch my market share :p. Besides i hate the pod thing, i dont want it,nothing can replace the beauty of just looking out the window of a ship.Heck, id love to pay the crew if they do a good job.

I think that crews would be a nice addition to the game, and for the person who brought up holidays and the like, give them planetside shore leave, just like navies do irl. seriously, i wouldn't mind paying 1isk a day per drew, plus any bonuses would be worth the money. Also, I think that if they are not used in a while that their skills should reduce gradually, nothing big, and not starting for at least 1-2 weeks, but do this just to stop people from having ships for no reason.
