1. Train to run kill missions.
2. In the same amount of time earn many times more isk/hour running missions than you would mining or producing items.
I wish this wasn't true, but with current mineral prices, any profit to be made in mining is easily overshadowed by mission running, and with dozens upon dozens of uneducated manufacturers selling their products at or below mineral prices, there's little to no profit to be made manufacturing T1 items, and invention and T2 manufacturing isn't much better (or much worse in some cases).
The main viable alternative income source is day trading, but that generally takes a bit of income to get started. ---

When you go for a retriever right away you can make more and faster money then you can by doing so with level one missions. So running missions isn't always more profitable, it all depends on what you are after.
I recommend reading this(can also be found in PDF format if you prefer that)
For the rest you might want to get drones to 5 aswell together with the related drone skills such as interfacing and other damage boosting skills, this is pretty much a must as 1.0 and 9.0 sectors are usually too crowded so you need to go a bit deeper, 0.8 is relatively safe but rats can show up so you need some defence.
Industry isn't really profitable at the start but for the basic stuff you pretty much need Industry V,Mass Production, Production Efficiency and also the processing skills.
Might also be wise after you made some money to get an industrial ship for transportation as remember don't just instantly sell at your station you'll half of the time get ripped off. use eve-central.com market finder to see where a good place to sell is.

I just created second paid account couple days ago to train purely as miner/industrialist and aimed him on evemon for a retriever (learning skills mixed in as its' quicker to do both but). Not worried about npcs as this character or corp mates can handle them ( initially), later will work on drones for him. Going to go read that guide now. -------

Don't bother- level 3/4 missions leave mining for dead, especially if you are attempting it solo.

Ok,
Here's how you start. take a few days to train your basic learning skills. This will help you build your skills faster.
Then work on Industry 5, Astrogeology 4, Mining Barge 4 and get into a retriever.. make sure you have at least drones 4 to take out any rats you might find..
YOu can then work your way up into more lucrative ores and t2 lasers.
Oh and the OP requested a little help.. not hey you suck got kill stuff..
If you are looking to learn how to do this.. look me up in game.. and we can teach you the proper way.. if you want to be an indy..
If you want to be a mission runner, thats fine too.. give us a hollar..

Your first step is to get learning base skills to 3: Mem with int and learning 1st then the other ones.
Then train for a ship you wish to use short term - the retreiver is a good goal Astrogeo 4 mining 4 barges 3 cap/nav and fitting skills all to 3 as well
Then get your learning skills to 4/3 (base ones to 4 and the advanced to 3) at this point you may also want to invest in a set of +3 implants.
After that you'll want to train most of the way through your end ship choice. Exumers 4, shield tanking skills at 4 and drone skills.
Then you can add 1 level to the advanced learning skills and finish the train. It'll be around 9mil skill pts to have a good hulk pilot and take you 5-6mos or so if thats what you want to do.

Furthermore, the support skills you train for your hulk (shield, cap, resistances, elec/eng etc) benefit you running missions as well. So if/when you get bored of mining every once and awhile, it is very easy to slip into a missioning role.
Flying Caldari ships for missioning is where this starts to shine. All those shield skills cross over.
