Edited by: Johann Callasan on 04/08/2008 08:13:39 Have had the bad luck to run into the Angels version of the mission Recon.
Nothing in the mission text said anything about the mission being the Angels one, and the only ship I have to fly it with is a Caracal.
Using kinetic missile launchers (2 heavy and 2 Assault) I barely scratch the cruisers inthe mission, and there's 4 of 'em.
Have active hardeners for Kinetic and Explosive damage fitted, and the enemy burns through my shields in less than 12 seconds - that's with a large extender AND a large booster installed.
Any advice on how to finish this one, or should I just give it up and take th faction hit?
Before anoyone says anything, I have consulted mission guides online, and they all recmooend a battlecruiser for this mission - well, I have the skills but not the money to outfit one to run it.

Then maybe wait till after downtime, the NPC's should reset. They are currently in a bad position cause you lingered to long.

both 2 and 4 level are doable in a shuttle (as is recon 2/3)
basically warp in, head straight for the gate, as soon as you get there warp out, you should be doing about 600m/s in a tiny ship so they didnt ought to be able to get you ion time

Heh, just to clarify any confusion for all:
When players here say "podded," they usually mean "podkilled," e.g. your pod was destroyed.
I'm guessing that Johann was "put in his pod" by the NPC's, e.g. his ship but not his pod was destroyed, and he called this "podded."
If I'm wrong, and your pod was destroyed by NPC's, then yes, petition it. If your ship was simply destroyed but not your pod, do not petition it.

You can do it in a Slasher, fit a few Overdrive mods and an afterburner and as soon as you warp in... boot it straight to the gate below you. After that gate, hang around in the next section till more rats show up, and just warp out.
The trick is in the name "Recon". By definition, Recon doesn't involve killing anything.

Podded != having ship destroyed and flying away in your egg shaped pod.
Podded = the above but then your pod is destroyed and you end up a corpse, and instantly wake up in your clone in a station. No flying way involved :)

As was said, if you can't kill them (AWESOME bounty mission); get a slasher with MWD and overdrives. It's like a 60k isk 4 km/s shuttle. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

If you want to try running the mission properly, get rid of the large extender and add another explosion hardener (passive, if you can't swing the cap on an active). Similarly, switch your missiles out from kinetic to explosive. Angels are weak against explosive damage, not kinetic.

If you're just trying to get through the mission, then everyone talking about using a shuttle is right though. Wait until downtime (when the mission resets) and just burn through it in a shuttle. You can easily make it to the gate in the first one, suffering only a volley or two if you head toward the acceleration gate immediately upon warp in. You can use a shuttle in the second recon mission as well, though that's a bit more risky. I usually take two or three volleys on that one, and almost always get into armor before warping out.

Keep in mind that a Caracal only gets a damage bonus to Kinetic missiles, which is 20% at lvl IV, that 20% might do more damage on Kinetic resist than 0% damage bonus on Explosive resist. ------------------------ Ship Yield Calc Improve Mining |

Thanks for the advice everyone, finally got through it.
Definitely a mission that will want to re-run when I get into BCs - the salvage/bounty looks like it'd be awesone.
The shuttle worked (with one hair-raising moment) for both Recon 1 and Recon 2, the hair-raising moment being in Recon 1 when the missile volleys startes. Made it to the gate and away before any real damage done, though.
For Recon 3, used my fastest ship with a Large extender and a Large AB - made it to the gate with no cap and soem shield left, and warped out. Luckily no spawns during that third mission.
Again, thanks againn for the advice - it worked beautifully!

You can't do recon 1/3 in a pod. At least not the L4 one.
I tried flying in with a shuttle to the first acceleration gate that you need to warp through. I had some rat ships directly above me (behind me) as I was flying to the gate, and I wasn't paying attention to transversal. So I got shot to hell and shuttle exploded.
I figured, oh well, so I flew the pod to the Acc. gate and tried to jump, but no dice. It wouldn't let a pod enter.
So you have to do it in a ship, which means the rats will shoot at you. Best bet, as suggested above, is to either get a friend to tank the rats while you hit the gate and warp, or you get a fast ship with speed fittings and blaze to the gate.

Early on i happened on Recon 1/3 lvl 3 with a Caracal with passive tank. I made it but with many warp outs. In Drake is much easier even if lvl 4. Nowdays this is my favorit mission but initially it was sure a shocking experience.
Of course you can't do lvl 4 recon on a caracal I don't know what lvl recon is yours. All in all better try it in a passive Drake. |

Can confirm that the sansha version of this can be done for part 1 and 2 (NOT 3!) in a shuttle. If you can't make it you might want to take a look at your navigation skills.
