Is it accurate to make the assumption that drones are superficially similar in function to pets from fantasy MMOs?

Drones are the main wepons system of most Gallente designs. They are also a viable weapons system for any other ship for any race. Be it jamming, webbing, nosing or what not, they are simply an extra platform for your ship.

You might find Gallentean Pet Drones in Ambulation, but currently they are merely tools, unless you happen to be able to tame a advanced or even sentient Rogue Drone, lol. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Rather than pets, I put drones in the category as damage over time (DoT) spells in other MMOs. You point them at a target and the target suffers damage or some other effect from then on.

Shhh with these pets (Drones). Get back to killing some mobs (Rats) and skin their corpses (Salvaging). Once you skin them, you can kill more recipie mobs so you can use jewlcrafting to build rigs (jewls). You can only put on a certain amount of rigs into rig slots (rings into ring slots)
Do not forget your potions (boosters) and then enter battlegrounds(fw). --

If they're pets, they're BAD little pets. They've gotten better in the last year, but they still have their moments. They're like those winged monkeys on The Wizard of Oz.
You're like, "hey, over there. Attack that" And they're like, "hoo hoo hoo, no! I'm gonna go hump this Serpentis leg until it shoots me!" And then you're like, "No, dammit! Shoot that!" And they're like... scratch butt. sniff finger... "uh... what?"
Yeah... pets.

psychologically being able to correlate one mmo function to another makes the game seem simpler. But if drones are pets we need a drone lp store and drone faction rewards, remember rogue drones?!

If you are referring to "pets" in games like EQ / WOW where you sick them on a target and they do damage or have special abilities, then yes.
Though, if you are referring to the pets that don't do anything and are only for looks, like the collectable pets in WOW / Maple Story, then no.
There are different kinds of drones. In WOW, Warlock and Hunter pets have special abilities... I'd say that is functionally similar to ECM (IE Felhunter's counter spell) drones. There are drones that do heavy damage, similar to the scepters in EQ.
I also believe a lot of players of every MMO have a closed mined biased view of the game they like. Most usually donĘt like being compared to a game that they think is inferior. I only state this in hopes that it may open the minds and opinions of others.
