EVE has too much in it that resembled ships at sea, not ships in space. It starts with the leaning that a ship does as it turns (actually, this is more like a motorcycle), but what just bugs me totally is the way ships "sway" in space like a boat at sea.
There is no water in space (that isn't frozen), there are no waves or tides. A ship that is stopped should be absolutely motionless. As it is, I get seasick on a regular basis playing this game.
At least have an option to turn if off, if not getting rid of this total silliness and illogic completely.

Hehe, i think it's the camera that's drifting a bit. I see the stars move back and forth ..it's called camera bob i think.
Also, i think the physics are abominable, but if they wern't, we'd se something completely like that overhead down game 'Asteroids' ..and that would not be cool.
Also, ..i beta, for a short time, they actually had collision detection ..i really wish they'd turn this back on ..i loved slamming into cargo containers! at the same time if they did, i think they would need to have some more predition methods on slowing down and such.

Yep, there is no excuse for this level of poor physics. Or at least this poor an emulation of physics.
Swaying is a joke. Windy warps are also a joke. Only sound that should be heard is the sound of my creaking ship or my engines, or power source, etc. NOT WIND. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

Yo should read the POTW achives in regards to sound in space. The sound is emulated by the computer's in the ship, otherwise you would hear nothing from external sources and battle would be alrmingly boring.

I would disagree that the physics engine is silly and illogical. The reason a boat makes wide sweeping turns is because of low friction in the water. There is very little friction in space and therefor any turns made by our ships will result in wide sweeping motions, unlike a car making a quick turn because of high lateral friction on the tires.
Also in low friction environments any change in momentum will result in some form of harmonics being introduced and therefore your ship sways when you complete your turn.
As for sound that is just plain silly event to emulate the sound. But like someone said before, battle would be boring if you couldn't here the explosions.

Maybe the extremely advanced sensors of the starships detect the minutest of tremors through space and amplify. Space isnt a complete vacuum.
Maybe there should be a competition to write the best technobabble for this kind of thing. :)

True space is not a complete vacuum, but inorder for sound to travel it requires dense enough medium for which the waves travel. Like standing up dominos and then flicking the one on the end, inorder to get them to cascade down they need to be close enough to impart there force on the adjacent domino. Even though space is not a complete vacuum it is however empty enough that sound cannot travel thru.
I have seen several of these blogs turn into big Physics discussions. Should be interesting.

From the Jovian Wetgrave:
After a while Anu's voice came back: "You're doing very well. Now we are going to activate the audio synthesizers." "Audio synthesizers? What do you mean?" Pirkotan thought. "As you know there is no sound in space, but when we were developing the capsules we found that people wanted to use as many of their senses as possible, thus we added the sound. By letting a computer create three dimensional sound we also add to the awareness you have while in battles, for instance."
It is purely synthesized, no physics, no high powered sensors detecting the sound.

Neat work-around
Anyway, back to point. Some ships DO sway, like the Tempest and Rifter. I know that the Rifter in station atleast is rocking from side to side, and the Tempests I have had attached to my ships (which ought to be fixed rather soon, IMHO), Tempests also slightly moved from side to side. No Gallente ships that I know of show this behviour. --

I think the Rifter sways because it is EXCITED!
How's that for physics?

So if someone was jumping out an airlock and screaming as they died, would the computer synthesize that to make the pilot more aware of what's goin on? The key to living in a sci-fi universe: Never wear a redshirt with an blank nametag...they always die first. |

I think the Tempest swaying is pretty fun actually. Makes the idea that you're flying an old rustbucket even louder, and I like it.

related to this, I'd like to know why my ship always has to move back to being "level" I'd quite like my ship to stay the way it is pointing (for issues to do with warping quickly to other places) but it always goes back to it level plane....is there a "reason" for this too?
Bite me....for i taste good :)

well, i like the idea of doing a flip/turn around in my ship as fighters do when turning competely around, ..my ship stopping, turning, and then going the other way is a waste of time ...if it can stay going fast as possible, then my chances of being hit by other ships decreases do to the fact that their guns are moving more so than they would be if i were to stop, turn, the start again.
