Do not attempt to adjust your monitor, nor change the settings in your web browser... The gold bar that you see to the left some of the posts is not a mistake or a graphical glitch. It is a marker that specifies when a thread has a post from one of the Dev Team. It is not retroactive, only posts made from this afternoon on will show this bar.

Heh, I thought my browser was randomly acting up and decided to only brake on posts that Dev's 'happened' to be posting in.

I guess it's too much load on server considering number of posts an search queries to be made per minute.

A small "Quick Forum Search Guide":
1) www.google.com 2) <place your search topic here> site:myeve.eve-online.com 3) select the topic of your choice 4) enjoy

Thought not.
As for the Gold Bar, I was literally about to post asking "What does this mean?" but thought I would just check here first

What's your point here? I would have thought it to be a fair assumption that all forums posts are held in a database (in fact, it'd be pretty daft if they're not]. Code to search a database isn't that hard to write, pretty much ALL forums have search functions, and many of them are free for download. Why not this one? Without it, it looks primitive and unsophisticated. -- Security Director, Draconis Industries. |

Yeah the forums here are really heart breaking. Custom they may be, it's still not difficult to search SQL and I would be shocked if they use some other method.

The forum database is horrendously complicated. That's why a search feature is hard to create. They're still ironing out the bugs as far as I know.

If they're that complicated, they should proabably rip it out and start again. Trying to make something complicated simple can be more trouble than it's worth. Better to start again from scratch. -- Security Director, Draconis Industries. |

I'd like to praise CCP on their geekness. All of the details and links given about the recent hardware upgrades was great! I love knowing a little bit more about what you guys run and what my money is going to. I'd love to hear real technical reasons why a search is so difficult to have on the forums.

i'm guessing the complications come from the fact that the forums are run through the same database as the characters (hence the nice little avatar thingy and skill listing section) and thus implementing a search function would require them to flag only certain fields in those database entries to be allowed to be searched.
I.e someone searches for "research project management" and gets all the posts with those words in it - as well as listings for every character with that skill.
That means figuring out an easy way of flagging specific sections of data so that peoples private character info is not shown.
On the other hand - I may be utterly and completely wrong - but I just gave the web guys a good excuse :)
please flame away as I am in no way considering myself a databse knowledgable person. ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" Waagaa Ktlehr, BDCI

No flaming needed, Omber.
SQL is all ready setup to do just that. I assume as well that the forums are linked into the rest of the user information system. It's no problem pulling posts about research, and not getting user info. One database should contain the forums info, and a separate DB would have the user info. They can easily cross reference the two if needed, but when searching posts, only the forum DB would be chosen. This is why I'm curious to know what the problem is they are facing. Is it a limitation of their code? Is it a restriction of the SQL they use?
Obviously we all want them to work on the game more then anything. But still, simple feature like a forum search would be nice. I've webmastered enough forums, and admin'd enough SQL DBs to wonder, what the heck kind of problem are they facing that restrains this new feature?

not all forums are elegant in design, and a "simple" LIKE query would only work on a single word.
then again, I personally think the website altogether is overdone, and a major culling/simplifying would do wonders for the poor response time overall.

Plenty of prepackaged forum software out there that have searches that work extremely well. :) Anyway, I really like the EVE forums, and this new feature makes it handy to tell when Devs stick their necks out to answer our questions and such.
Though here's a thought: why not a dedicated pseudo-board that just lists all the threads with dev responses? Lots of other boards have it, a "dev tracker" as it were.

Of course you could just hire me I have this real nifty archival space saving feature works great unless you want to retrieve something acurately, but I figure if you allready know exactly what's missing, just re-create it and stop busting my chops.
Stop griping about server instability and go buy an EVE mug!
Additionally with the purchase of each mug you will receive two(2) invisible Elves.
