I still use 2000 on a few of my computers. It's a very stable platform.
I used windows2000 on my main PC up until they started releasing ''games for windows'' which forced me to install XP to play games like dark messiah and company of heroes, if it were not for that I would still be using win2kPro

Soon Linux is the only way to be safe. Windows comes with so many different pieces of vulnerable software (that you cant even uninstall sometimes, as with Internet Exploder) that its really becoming difficult to be safe using it.
If you honestly think that a piece of open source software is any safer than one developed by a dedicated team of hundreds of (payed) programmers, you are delusional.
The only reason that the security flaws in Linux (I'm certain there are at least as many if not more than in Windows) have not been exposed is that so few people use it, that noone bothers to check. If Linux becomes popular, they will be found, and they will be exploited.
Maybe because it has a proven track record, has a 90% share of the professional server OS market, or because it's security system is modelled on the decades old, tried and tested Unix system, which has always had a reputation for safety and stability (while Microsoft are forever reinventing their security system to try to shake off the problems in their earlier designs). Or maybe its just because Microsoft only run a team of 100 or so developers, while Linux is the product of several hundred thousand developers, ranging from eager undergrads to server administrators for major projects and companies (specifically, those whose companies form part of that 90% who use Linux as a server solution).
Maybe it's best not to just take your word for it that Linux is inherently unsafe just because it probably is. Being open source and so forth doesn't guarantee that it'll be very secure, but nothing so far has given anyone reason to believe it's not. That's not to say its perfect (nothing ever is), but treating MS Windows as some sort of gold standard for information security is laughable to say the least... ------

No, you can't. I am pretty sure that article is wrong. They with 99% surety mean javascript. Java is not a scripting language - javascript is, so that article fails already. Besides, the Java VM that runs applets is heavily sandboxed, as far as I know, no one has been able to break out of that sandbox for a very, very long time.
So yeah, stop posting bullshit.

While I really dislike M$, they do have strong operating systems. The big problem is the internet.
Install XP or even vista on a computer with no network capability and you have quite a powerful OS.
Want to use the internet? Go linux!

An unstoppable hack? I'm doomed now, unless I avoid websites I don't trust and don't let any software on my system do anything at all without my permission.

Hyperbole and a lot of rubbish, as usual.
From the comments:
Quote:
Alex Sotirov responds to Ed Bott's ZDnet's blog: "Thanks for your blog post about our research. I was horrified by the lack of understanding displayed by the tech press when they covered the paper Mark and I presented at BlackHat. You rightly point out that the sky is not falling and the flaws are not unfixable. In fact, the next versions of Flash and Java will contain specific measures that limit the impact of the techniques we presented. We expect Microsoft to follow suit as well.
Exploitation is a cat and mouse game. The paper we presented puts the offensive side at a slight advantage, but it wonĘt take long for the defenses to catch up. Our intention was always to nudge the software vendors into improving their defenses and I hope we will succeed."
Just a storm in a tea cup then? http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=513

Is this what passes as a revolutionary hack for you guys? (I know you guys play eve) Have you hackers just given up and are on the payroll of Norton, Macafee, Antivirus 2009 and spysherriff and participate in a corporate warfare nobody cares about?
Are the days of Backorifice gone and now the greats shoot for revolutionary ways to create yet another BHO in internet explorer? LOL!
Ok, so I was being dramatic. What they didnt elude to or maybe they are just talking out of their asses, is the user still has to click the button that says "The website www.enimasmileys.com wishes to install active x controls on you desktop" "yes" "no" Memory space addressing, javascript, .net, and dep dont really help you slip through an open protocol unannounced. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. I'm certain that you're wrong. They used Java, ActiveX, and .NET objects to get around Vista's protections: Address Space Layout Randomization(ASLR), Data Execution Prevention (DEP). It's not BS, learn some manners and at least have the decency to do some research before you post remarks like that. That's one hack.
That said, another person from the same blackhat conference said using Java, not javascript it's possible to replicate the hack over Linux, and OSX.
The hack isn't limited to only IE, it's not really a fault with IE in this case, although it does make it easier.
Also the last major security hole with java that I remember was late 2004. That's not that long ago.

Yet they didn't hack the Java VM itself. And no, I will not "learn some manners" on an e-forum online, because you tell me to. If i see BS by someone who doesn't really know what he is talking about (hello, I have Sun certification in Java...), then I call that BS. Just to clarify, breaking the system, because it has incorrect handling of the Java VM != hacking the VM itself. Sun's implementation is pretty good.

Hahahaha, so what's the reason now for people paying almost 2x the ammount of cash for a Mac with the same specs as a PC? Or will you still keep cheering the Mac OS X for you're imaginary "invulnerability" against viruses and such? _________________________________

Edited by: Ryysa on 25/08/2008 06:01:59 The reason there are fewer viruses on Mac and Linux is that there are a lot fewer people using them.
If the situation changes, there will be a lot more exploits popping up for those two systems. However, it is significantly harder to gain superuser privileges on a Linux based system than on a Windows based one.

And this is why Microsoft is trying to get people away from running Windows as the superuser (Administrator) with Vista. However, its backfiring quite a bit. Users dont like being harassed by their computers.
