PvP doesn't bring out the worst in people, frustration and/or people bring out the worst in people. I've had plenty of PvP in many games that is about skill, a good fight, and testing yourself against another person, and everyone is mature about it. Equally in many games I've seen degenerate immature smacktalking from those that are both new and veteran PvPers. People are the problem, not the environment they're put in. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation or alliance, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... |

Good to here that your the sort of mature, balanced individual who responds to other peoples words with violence, which of course is always the best thing you can do and makes you look and feel like a really big man. |

Also a prime example of why many of us who have enjoyed EvE for YEARS don't play other games. ......
...
Do you have to sacrifice the principle of player competition in order to get a larger customer base?
Many forget that business ownership is not just about the amount of customers. For some, it's about a quality product, or providing to a specific audience. How much does EvE have to give up (and yes, I think it's a loss), in order to reach this utopia of millions of players?
It shouldn't stop growing. But nor should it try to appeal to a playerbase who DONT WANT THE GAME ANYHOW. If you are playing EvE to play a single-player game with an IM, why are you playing EvE?
Claiming that CCP should bend or fold to support the 'majority' is a poor argument. Should the rest of the world bend and fold because east asia has the majority of human beings?
To appeal to the vast majority, you have to make things simple, and easy. Why? Because human beings as a group are stupid. Individuals are smart, but the reason WoW survives is because it markets to the lowest common denominator of the playerbase. The stupidest, poorest, laziest and most naive.
WoW is not the benchmark for the gaming community. EvE is. Build a quality product for a dedicated playerbase. The guys who have been here years are still here (though some take breaks). But when someone complains about not liking it and how their friends won't come over to play, I have to wonder why you want to change the game to fit you, instead of recognizing that it's not the kind of game you enjoy.
If you think "but I like EvE, except for the PvP", then please recognize that no, in fact, you don't like EvE.
Geez so much to type where to begin.... Ok i think ill stop at the above comment you just made, YES it is about customers we pay bills we fund the game in order to keep maintaining it, we the CUSTOMER is what business is all about! At the end of the day whine as you may but its all about money, CCP is like any other company and turning a profit is their goal. Now granted it may have started as a personal game project at one point but eventually grew and entered a area where the consumer dictates product and NOT the company, We the consumer have choices and CCP knows this. Yes i dont have to play Eve and i dont have to pay for it, but i enjoy it however the majority of new players that come to Eve rarely renew subscriptions and last more than their trial period all due to CCP old school PvP ruleset which needs to change.
Oh and incase you havent realized (and im no WOW fanbui) WOW IS THE BENCHMARK blizz has accomplished what most MMO companies would dream of!! Their subscription numbers have made many developers and desingers RICH! not to mention a huge resume booster! WOW may not be a great quality product (as stated as your opinion) but the TRUE FACT remains they have achieved insane subscription numbers AND CONTINUE to grow, Eve however isnt even 1% of WOW player base, so yes im sure someone there did something right!

I found that the majority of eve players are actually rather pleasant to talk with, even if they just blew up your ship. I have also found that smack begets smack. Perhaps if you are being treated poorly you should look inwardly first.

Eve isnt a skill related PvP system, its actually a very old school rock, paper and scissors system based on chance. Skill would require some kind of hand / eye cordination and tracking of events, Eve doesnt provide this. At its simplest its about your chance to go up against another player that your setup will counter and thats about it.
And yes PvP does bring the worst in people because its an avenue that allows it.

Wow is the benchmark only in making money. This is only one benchmark. I don't think Eve has ever tried to be like WoW, something I am glad of and something that has kept me interested (on one character or another) since pre-beta.
Customers do pay the bills and are important, but they're also fickle. If you just bend to their every whim then you're bound to fail eventually because your product will be a confused maladjusted mess. Games should have some aspirations to being more than just money making devices. Eve is an excellent example of this and the unique 'flame' of it's aspirations is, by and large, well kept by CCP. If they make money in the meanwhile then "Yay!", but I've never got the impression that that is ALL they want to do with Eve. That's why it's better than the likes of WoW in many, many ways.

I'm going to have to agree with the others who suggest that the community is NOT particularly abusive.
In fact, I suspect the nature of PvP in Eve occassionally reminds people to watch their words.
I'm an easygoing fairly amiable player. But even if I weren't I might choose my words carefully, just realizing how much one player or a few players can do to interfere with my plans.

Even though i agree with your comment (to a point) i have to state the fact that CCP is still and will always be in the business to make money. Look at their recent trends and their attempt to market and expand and you will soon realize CCP is indeed trying to make more money in order to expand, and in order to make money (unless they know a better way) is to attract a larger player base.
And yes WOW is the benchmark for money making in MMO's, but Money is what keep the company growing and expanding. Its no longer the days that a group of talented programmers, aritist musicians and so on can simply relay on a good idea base on principle, its all about money and in todays economy its double that!

As you say - it is a great game and there are a lot of brilliant Corporations who do not engage in pointless smack. Stick with it and it only gets better
Of course the worst corps and alliances who engage in this (Band of Developers, Goons) are untouchable. Try submitting a harassment petition on any of them.

Edited by: Mother Lucilla on 12/08/2008 17:00:38 Troll, definately. I don't mind feeding it though
This is just the millionth post of "People are so cruel, I'm gonna go away!"-type, but I can generally sympathize with the OP. Many times I've had hard earned ISK gone up in smoke because somebody flipped my can, salvaged my wrecks or caught up with me in low-sec. And when I was a noob... I made the mistake of showing my frustration over local.
Let me tell you this about letting your frustration show in local: Everybody there will try to make an ass out of a whiner no matter how right he is. Most of them will cry "foul!" themselves if the time comes but when somebody else gets crapped upon everybody just joins the smack talk to crap on him a little more. When you're the one being crapped upon it's no fun, but when you're the one doing the crapping... it's like a little party
The important thing is: DON'T FEED THE FIRE! I've lost a BS to a ganking once in high-sec. I felt like eating the keyboard, but instead I let it be and said over local that it was my own stupidity for trusting someone in this game that got my bs. People on local were supportive and we all joked around for a bit. It didn't get me my BS back, but in 10 minutes I sure was feeling a lot more mellow then if I'd started smack talking you know?
The important thing is to never ever trust strangers and to keep talk on local to a minimum, if you're in a corp, talk in corp chat if you're feeling "chatty". And if you're angry at somebody, try congratulating them for their "smart moves", most griefers feed on smack and you can make them feel bad just by "being okay" with it all

I stopped reading right there. Sexism has no place here.
EDIT: Thought I might as well respond to the OP. Eve is all about meeting everyone in the world, without walled suburbia or social standards or (to an extent) economic barriers, and in some cases even without police, and learning to handle yourself around those people. In that sense, EVE has opened my eyes to the heights and depths of which humanity is capable, and to the fact that it takes a different kind of person to survive such exposure to raw humanity. I think the result of learning to cope in a personal world that now contains all these types of people, has made me smarter, stronger, and honestly, better.
