I have good internet connectivity but can't connect to eve as of downtime on the 15th August. I get the message "Connection timeout - The server did not respond to the client's secure-handshake request within a reasonable amount of time"
Only ever had lag/connectivity problems with the limelight(?) crap that happened a while ago. Has been perfect for months now. I'm in Australia on iiNET, anyone with similar problems that have just started? Can anyone shed any light on recent ccp changes (hosting etc)?

I had exact same problem as you. Sydney area. What I did was change the port.
Funnily enough, though, restarting one of my computers made it connect it again. -------------------

I to am also having connection issues, which started after DT last night (15/08 AU). I am also in the Sydney area and IINET is my isp also. I have changed the port to 3724 which has fixed it. But something changed over that DT period to cause this issue. I have 3 computer on my home network and all are having the same connection issue.

I have the same problem, and am also with iiNet. The workaround of chaging port numbers worked for me, but the method of changing ports which was linked above didn't work (i.e. the prefs.ini editing method).
Here is what did work for me:
1) right click on your EVE desktop icon 2) select properties 3) edit the box labled "Target" to look like this "C:\Program Files\<your eve directory>\eve.exe" /end /server:87.237.38.200:3724
Good luck.

I'm on BT in the UK and the lag is horrendous. I've changed ports and its fine.
I don't think two companies on opposite sides of the world suddenly decided to throttle back the same port. So its a provider nearer CCP or CCP have been playing again.
Just done a trace and its 239mS from London to CCP lol. We've got circuits around the globe with less than that. If it has been throttled it's CCP's provider thats done it.

Edited by: Odre Echee on 16/08/2008 11:03:58 At this point, I'd say it's time somebody go off and ring iiNet or complain on Whirlpool, but last time I did that, all that happened was being told by fanboys that it's: a) my DNS b) my hosts file c) my router d) my connection e) my firewall
Ugh.
Though this very well could be the sea cables busting up again.

NINJAEDIT : as soon as Tranq. comes on, I'll do a Telnet thing like I found in another thread, and file a petition.
I am having the exact same problem with iiNet in Sydney metro area. I decided to try everything I could to fix it on my end, and well found it wasn't me, even though I posted my info on whirlpool and everyone pointed at me saying its my setup and not ISP, saying I didn't know jack, after I told them I was certain it was my ISP.
Also having issues with other games logons, sometimes they worked mostly they don't or lag out right away. :( I will yell at iiNet some tomorrow, I don't think it is CCP.

I just signed upto Whirlpool to reply to that thread of yours, and checked back just to get the linkie. Har. You can always give the link 'ere. Save Valan, who, according to my degree in science (we do statistics) can be considered outlier, it seems only people who has problem like this is people on iiNet. I downloaded a couple o' other MMOs to test, and I'm having trouble connect too.
Hell, only good use for Whirlpool is to find out if there's a problem anyway. It's damn choke-full of fanboys that it's like arguing on a Mac forum, or hardcore-PC forum about superiority of another platform.

Heh Thanks. I just sent off an email to iiNet support (mailto:[email protected]) regarding this issue, just specifying connection issues to several sites/games/programs, and that there are forum threads for these things confirming of an iiNet only problem. Chances are they will want me to run their stupid tests anyway. Hopefully this will get resolved soon.
It's been annoying to get home from work unable to play, then wake up on saturday and same deal, so spending all day trying to fix :(
Edit: Anyone who wants to post in that iiNet thread on whirlpool is welcome to, they often seme to get reps from the different ISP's there, and maybe if lucky one will see and do something. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1034416&p=-1#bottom

I am having the same problem in the US as of late last night. I was on then it dropped me and I have been unable to reconnect. I tried the shortcut edit and it still can't connect.
I am using Cbeyond out of Dallas Texas. I have an actual commercial T1. I am guessing that CCP is having peering issues again somewhere upstream. Since I can VPN to another clients network and I am able to get on through another ISP. My Traceroutes from Cbeyond go out through Level3.

I spent 30 minutes on the phone to iinet, they ran their tests, and everything came back fine. I even upgraded my modem, but to no avail. The common denominator here, seems to be iinet. My corp mates that are on Optus, say that they've had no problem, and I note that there hasn't been a mention of Optus or Telstra here. Looks like those two ISP's will be picking up some business from iinet this week. Damn, I didn't want to subscribe to those evil bastards, but it's looking like we'll have to dance with the devil to play. Trouble is, having to wait between 4-6 weeks for them to get around to blessing us with their presence to connect. Ironic, that to have the fastest internet service, you have to put up with the slowest of service from the ISP's.
Cheers, NoDeath TooUgly.

For the AUSSIES....Spoke to iinet again, and received disinterest. Rang Optus, and they'll deliver the new modem and connection in 10 days. Spoke to an Eve corp director that has been connected to Optus for 11 years without issue.....that's good enough for me. 20,000 bps ADSL with 20 gig Fussion Plan for $59 pm for the first 6 months. Goes up to $99 after that, but you can change plans, and will know your own usage by then.
Cheers.

Same problems here.. Sydney area, on iinet, can't connect to EvE except for a brief period this morning. Also, the EQ2 patcher program (LaunchPad.exe) won't run at all, but since there hasn't been an update to that game since I last played, I can bypass the patcher and log in just fine to play.
I haven't bothered ringing iinet (yet), as it's a sunday and I'm sure it's just the knuckle-draggers working now. I mean, face it, if you can't even manage to get yourself a job where you have Sundays off, how can you be expected to fix a slippery ISP problem like this? ;)
Seriously though, this would be a tricky one to diagnose on their end, surely, as the whole rest of the 'net seems to be working fine for me. Browsing (obviously), email, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online, etc, etc. The only 2 things not working are EvE and the SOE Patcher.

I am giving it till Monday night for it to be sorted one way or another.
If it cant be fixed or isolated, I will move on to another ISP and see if that works. It does look obvious that it is something that iiNET has done, but they cant see the problem because it is possibly something they removed. In the end it does look weird that all iiNET Eve players all of a sudden at the same time have the same disaster.

I changed my port number in the PREFS.INI file and that did not work but when i changed the target in the shortcut it worked brilliantly and am now back online. Can someone tell me if i can put the same info into the Ventrilo target to get it to work again. The only thing that seems to have been affected by this is everything I do with an american connection. I cannot log into the american servers on Trackmainia either.

Hi all,
I spoke to IINET earlier who said they were aware of the issue, and that it was impacting more than one gaming service (although they were not very specific about the other games affected).
I have had limited success with alternative ports with 2 out of 4 machines working. I took my laptop to a mates place who also has IINET and had the same problems (meaning I can stop screwing with my router settings now).
To make life easier I suggested that IINET put up a support note on their status page (which they said they would get on), these are the links I am following (along with this thread).
IINET Network Status Page Whirlpool Thread
My guess is that this will magically fix itself some point in the next few days with no explanation forthcoming..

So disconnected my adsl modem, and hooked into iinet via dialup, same thing time out. No issues with the net apart from not being able to play eve.
Disconnected from iinet, reconnected using dodo dial up got into game no problems.
So it seems to me that the problem is iinet, but then I am no "IT" informed type person.
Both dialup connections were done on the same computer, using the same phone line and modem.

EVE has been very laggy when connecting from home for several days now, often to the point of unplayability. Thought it was my PC, but seeing all the other fellow iinet customers being hit with this, I guess it is the service after all...
Tried the fixes listed, to no avail. Hope this gets sorted soon, got corp stuff to sort out
EDIT: I can confirm that it is a problem somewhere between iiNet and CCP. Just logged on using my Hellstra 3G card from work, connects no worries at all. Bloody iinet.

Hey guys. Speaking from iphone so please excuse typos. I done some testing with one of the affected players and removing port blocking in toolbox seemed to resolve the issue.
Instructions for doing so: 1) browse to www.iinet.net.au 2) enter user/pass and click toolbox 3) scroll to account tools for your DSL plan 4) in dropdown select port forwarding 5) disable port forwarding. Apply/save 6) remove power cord from modem 7) wait 5 minutes 8) reconnect and eve should be fixed
Now port blocking from iiNet is for your own protection and it stops common threats from entering your system on regularly used ports. Anyone using this workaround should be using their own firewall / av protection and does so at their own risk
There may be a proper resolution forthcoming however so far it looks like this workaround works.it should also allow our guys to determine the source of the problem.
Anyone affected please confirm / deny if this resolves the problem.
Kind regards Richard

Hi Ebank,
Thanks for following this up, unfortunately port blocking has been disabled for some time on my account, so no luck there. (As a side the account is configured for a reliable connection, not super speeds).
Thanks CPAS

I've never had port blocking on for my iiNet Account. I seem to be accessing Eve again without too many issues. My ventrilo is more of an issue, but seems to have got progressively better.
I'm hearing that other seemingly random ISPs are being affected as well. It looks like on of CCP's ISP's peers is throttling traffic. iiNet might want to look at re-routing traffic through different peers to see if they can resolve the issue. I don't have any difinitive prrof of this, but it has happened before with other ISPs. Direct contact with CCP might also be a way to resolve this. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

My man Hector really should have been a Minmatar as he is the major knuckle dragger at iinet ,last time we chatted he told me of playing poker online for hours then off to the pub for a few before knocking off - with overtime bonus for boozing ! Cheers for looking into it mate, glad to see someone at iiNet is relatively on the ball. Your solution is impossible to test, however, due to the fact that iiNet's account tools seem to be dead. As is the phone support. What's going on over there?

Haha yeah yeah. I'll be back soon, just getting some other games out of the way first!
Just test-connected up to EVE from here at work, seems to be OK. Had no timeout problems with auth, trace routes to the server seems to be returning OK.
Anyone affected, if you try to trace route to 87.237.38.200, what happens?

I have to say that I've had few issues with iiNet in comparison to other ISPs (and I've had a few). The fact that we've got some Eve Community members on staff and helping out does increase my level of confidence that this will be fixed.......I'm starting to think that in this case iiNet might be on the bad end of a very long stick with the real issue lying further upstream.

OK, an external link was identified to be causing intermittent timeout failures.

It really is a bit of luck however that myself and Hektor sit near a person who was dealing with a call from someone about this issue. When she asked for help from a senior it was just lucky that we were sitting nearby and our ears *****ed up when we heard "Eve Online" being mentioned.
I know of 3 iiNet staff members who play Eve. I am probably the most religious player though .
On a positive note we did get to install Eve on a test machine (finally had a reason to do so) but I don't like our chances of being allowed to keep it on there
Glad to see the problem is resolved guys

As a happy customer, I think you should keep your Eve test install, just in case you need to do a daily system test for all your dedicated Eve customers.......Anything less than 3 hours testing at a time would not be conclusive IMO.
Thanks guys. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Sorry Ric, I already had to uninstall the client from the test machine. ;)

Yep the problem seemed to be affecting a considerable number of applications. Some of the reports I heard were:
Eve Online Age of Conan some crappy bridge site (card game) Ventrillo/TS A few small MMO type games
That's probably why the Network Ops guys managed to pick up on it so quickly. It's uncommon to have so many reports on issues such as these without a problem existing. When we saw this thread and the Age Of Conan one it was fairly clear a problem did exist. |
